To late to plant oats?

I planted oats for the first time this year.. Planted them a few weeks ago and deer seem to LOVE them...

I planted regular bin run oats... $18 for 80# bag, so pretty economical

Is it to late to plant more? How late into the season will they normally grow.

Anyways, I plant oats right to about September 20th. Oats will grow in cooler wet weather nicely. The deer eat them right into Thanksgiving. Oats are a sure bet when other grasses, legumes fade.

Thats cheap....you can sow them and theyll prolly grow but a frost will nuke them

One more question... If I put them down now in a clover plot and go over with the roller, will they grow? I am assuming yes, since the ones I spilled in my stone driveway are growing nicely!

Good to know it's not too late! I've seeded oats/WW/WR 3x from Sept. 1st-12th. While broadcasting the 3rd time, I noticed the lack of seed on the ground from the first 2 rounds. I also noticed several piles of turkey poop and a few feathers laying here and there. I hung a cam and found that turkeys were in the plots EVERY day, picking up the seed that I broadcasted! I hung a white garbage bags on a stake blowing around in the breeze in the plots, thinking that would keep them out for a while. NOPE!! Next step is to try pie plates! Since it's not too late to seed, I might buy another sack of oat seed and lay it on thick, to hopefully have some left to sprout!

If you ever noticed an oat field that has been harvested, The light oats that blow out the back of the combine, on the ground will grow once a nice rain falls. They won't do much, as the roots have trouble penatrating the ground, but will germanate and grow. The oats should have been planted first, covered with 1" of soil, roll,  then broadcast the clover seed and firm the gound by rolling good again.  Hey, but what the heck, you have the seed. Try broadcasting the seed before a nice rain, you never know until you try.

 

If you try this, snaps some pics of the outcome. I be interested in a new no-till method.

I am also planting more oats today,  if dry enough soil conditions.

When I planted them in the past, I always lightly disced them to cover, then rolled. This year, I broadcast the seed 3x, about 4-5 days apart, so I couldn't disc them in to cover the seed. I just rolled each time to get good/firm seed to soil contact. Plus, in the past, I didn't have a flock of turkeys tearing the hell out of the seed either... I now have white garbage bags AND aluminum pie plates blowing in the wind in the plots! We'll see...

 

Hoping this stretch of sun (Finally!) will get things growing and greening up. I'm seeing some green. The neighbors triticale field is starting to green up nicely too.
