Cabin Fever
When do deer start hitting the corn? Do they wait until the corn turns brown? Always seen corn damage when the stalks are still green, but don't know if its from squirrels, coons, or deer?
growalot
my corn is gone...the field corn I plant as a cover...stripped...thankfully they have left the stalks standing...the sweet corn .......corn is stripped and stalks trampled ...I know at least some is from the deer for their foot prints are every where and I have a few scarred up pumpkins from pawing...they have not touched the ripening sorghum yet...but are in it eating some beans and the turnips I planted in bare spots...good hide and bedding area
G-Man
if just ear tips(silk) are gone when green=deer damage. stalks pulled over when green=coon. large area of stalks pulled inward toward center of circle=bear. when brown ear missing=deer, squirrel. stalks pulled over coon, bear in circle again. ear tip kernals missing and husk frayed..blackbird / possible turkey. Berniez
It all depends on the local food supply. This year there is so much food in the woods the deer really won't need to hit the corn hard until real cold and snow blankets the area. I've had corn left alone until November to January. One year they cleaned a 2 acre field before the gun season. General rule is once the weather gets cold the deer start to move and standing corn offers both security and a food source.
