From the Louisiana Swamps to the Concrete Jungle. HELP!

So I moved here in May of this year for a Job. I thought I was going to be able to handle not deer hunting on my lease in Louisiana this year. Well, lets just say I'm itching to get into the woods to bow hunt. I really just need to get away from the city and sit in a tree to get my head right. Even if I don't see a deer.

Anyone on here willing to show me the ropes around here or give me any advice on places to hunt would be great. I live in Brooklyn but would be willing to travel a few hours to a place if it's nice and promising.

Thanks in advance.

I would love to trade a hunt if someone would be interested in Traveling to LA. We have a some really nice land on the Atchafalaya river. I have a map of our land if anyone would be interested. It loads into google earth and has all of our trails and stand locations.

They pulled 3 spikes and a doe from there this weekend with bows.

Bnola,

Welcome to the concrete jungle.  I live in NYC myself and felt compelled to answer.  There is a lot of public land on Long Island that is available to hunt as well as other areas not too far from the city.  Tough finding hunting partners out here in NYC, so i am more than happy to help.  Heck, if you have a car, We can team up (i don't have a car - usually zipcar or borrow when going hunting).  I grew up on LI, so know of some decent areas.

oh so your in Brooklyn, not far from me.  Did you get a NY license yet?

No. I am not able to get my Bow Safety cert because they don't offer the classes anymore. I'm truly thinking about just going get my Deer tags with my LA license and claim ignorance if I get checked.

There's 2 in Brooklyn at the end of November.  Bow season in Long Island and Westchester goes all the way to December 31st.  It'll also allow you to hunt the muzzleloader season which you can use a bow.

I don't think it's a good idea to post your intentions of conducting illegal activities on this forum as DEC officers can and do check this forum.

Have you checked outside of NYC for the classes? When I took my hunters course, I drove over an hr away and stayed overnight in my vehicle. It was subzero temps, and I'm forever known as the guy that slept in the car to my instructors. Get it done!

According to the DEC website, there was a combination course available for Oct 30, but registration is now closed. If I were you, I'd try to get in contact with the instructor ASAP to see if he'll let you in.

Sorry to hear, looks like Nov then. I'd call around the local archery shops and ask/request a class be held before then if you are so inclined. It may, or may not work. Queens Archery and ProLines in queens and puce also got Smithtown archery in LI. Blue Mountain may also hold courses from time to time, these places may be just waiting for enough interest to do another course.
