vizslas
I just made some shag bark hickory syrup. While squirell hunting in Pendelton I found some hickory trees. I brought some of the loose bark home washed and toasted it.Then after simmering a tea of bark and spring water i removed the bark then reduced it by 25% of its volume. Then just add sugar. We ended up with 15 quarts that we processed for our use throught the year. Just as good as maple with a little bit of smokey flavor. Dinsdale
I do maple....and know a guy who does birch syrup....and an old timer that taps walnut. Not exatly like tapping sap, more like a flavored simple sugar syrup. Hmmmm; I have a shag bark here, I'll have to toy with that idea. Pygmy
VERY interesting... My ex wife did maple for years and years... Never have had syrup quite that good since she kicked my sorry butt out...
