ApexerER
Ok so I am very green at Turkey hunting. My plan is to be in and set up tomorrow morning before 5am with a couple of hen decoys out sitting in my blind I just picked up last night. So my question is, how long do I give it before I move out? What tactic do you use for "run and gun"? Do you just walk around hitting the call hoping for a response? I have found some scratched up ground in several area's scouting but have not gotten any answers from roosting birds and I have not seen any birds while scouting.... TeeBugg
I normally sit until around 830-9 then ill start moving around. Locator calls first then ill throw yelps and what not out there. Usually ill travel 50-60 yards and stop and do two or three calling sequences. Then repeat again another 50 or so yards.
turkeyfeathers
How many acres are you hunting? I hunt 70 acres. I don't run and gun myself . Figure they can hear me from anywhere on this property. I've pretty well patterned them and know they'll hit the field I'm set up over eventually . I've gotten up to move to take a little walk and got busted both times. Dang birds were right behind me and never made a peep. I now sit til noon if I have to. The 2 year old bird I killed last year came in silent. Strutted all around my decoys. Just because they're not talking doesn't mean they're not there IMO. If you haven't tried popping up that blind yet I would make time today to do so. No need to be fussing around with it in the morning and dark.

Sets up in about 2 seconds...Taking it down and getting it back in the bag was another story...

I am hunting on just shy of 1000 acres. 400 on one side and 600 on the other with a strip in the middle I don't have permission to hunt on.... NYBuckHunter27
I am hunting on just shy of 1000 acres. 400 on one side and 600 on the other with a strip in the middle I don't have permission to hunt on.... ok so if you cant find a hot bird than there are none around. you should be fine lol thats alot of ground to cover. you could walk from 6am to 12 locating birds...Goodluck!

ApexerER
1000 acres. Run and gun it That's what I am asking....How do you do that? Walk around calling waiting for a response from a bird? Do you use a turkey call? Should I use my crow call even if it is late morning?
TeeBugg
Use both. I start with a crow call and switch to a turkey call once i get closer
Woodjr55
With a 1000 acres to hunt I wouldn't bother with the blind. I hunted a large property last year and we travel prolly a half mile once we found birds and started working them. That just my opinion though
