Culvercreek hunt club
Fortunately I don't have to plant any since I have a close Uncle that seems to have a garlic fetish. He just gave me a very hot garlic that I use for my salsas, canning and venison sausage making. he has more put up if I need more but he gave me 50 cloves to start. I might pop a few in the ground this fall myself.
mac
for those of you that have the bulbs now that you will be planting this October, what is the best way to store the bulbs until then ?
adkbuck
Hi Mac, I cure mine for 2 weeks or so out of the sun in an area with good ventilation to dry out. I tie the entire plants in bundles of 10 and hang them (bulbs up) from the rafters of an outdoor shed. Then after they have cured I cut off the roots and the tops and clean them up a bit (don't use any water, just a light brushing). I then put them in burlap sacks and hang the sack(s) in a cool dark place (for me, I hang the sacks from the rafters in the basement). When October roles around I break the bulbs I'm going to use for seed into cloves and spread then out in a box or on a table indoors for a day or two (don't know if that is really necessary) then plant them. Pygmy
I treat mine basically the same as ADK..Right now the entire plants are spread out on a sheet of plywood out of the sun in my shed. Soon I'll tie them in bundles and hang them to let them cure a couple more weeks. Then I'll cut off the roots and tops, and store them in onion bags hanging in my cellar. I'll set aside some of the largest bulbs for seed, and plant them in mid October.
