This is a pretty good read if you're into this stuff.  Some of their charts were a bit confusing to me but never the less, very informative.  The bottom line is that rifles are the ONLY way to go.

Very informative..

Back when shotguns were mandatory in my county, I had an informal target range in my backyard. There was room enough for about a 100 yard shot. We were shooting directly into a hillside, with no dwellings, livestock, etc. for perhaps a mile in the background.

Many, MANY times when shooting shotgun slugs you could hear them whine off into the wild blue yonder after striking the ground.

I seldom if ever hear a ricochet when shooting centerfire rifles under similar conditions with expandable hunting bullets. FMJs would probably be much more prone to ricochet.
