Gun Jammed
There's a ton of public land in region 8. I tried doing some research on which ones may be the best for Turkey but haven't had any luck coming up with an answer. This will be my first year at an attempt to turkey hunt as I've only been out once. I was wondering if any of you have ppersonally hunted any specific public land in region 8 and what was your sightings like and what's the hunting pressure like. Thanks
Skillet
My part of region 8 is tough. Forget about anything on the north end. Braddock bay wma is not very big, & has very little turkey habitat. Oak openings unique area in Honeoye falls is nice (seen turkeys & sign there), but crowded for it's size. I've hunted squirrel & rabbit there, and I've seen other hunters every time. I drive by the parking area often, & during turkey or deer season, the lot is crowded. Honeoye creek wma is also pretty small. If You're around Naples, Hi Tor wma is huge and it has a lot of turkey, but it's well known and gets a lot of pressure. The trail system is pretty extensive & makes it hard to get away from other hunters. I still try there though, & I'd say give it a shot. Late season is my favorite time to hunt state land, I still see hunters, just not as many. Public land is frustrating, but birds get killed there. Maybe it'll be you that Kills one this year. Good luck!
growalot
you could try around the Hemlock /Canadice forest area...we have good turkey...only park nearby I know of Harriet Holister does not allow turkey hunting..I do not know why...Not sure about Stoney brook park but I think rattle snake hill in Ossion is a good place...just what I have heard... Lawdwaz
we have good turkey...only park nearby I know of Harriet Holister does not allow turkey hunting..I do not know why.. You know I hunted HH state park for years before finding out it was off limits. Talk about a MIND BLOWER. Every year we saw other guys hunting, talked to them and even compared birds. I figured the reason it wasn't hunted too hard was the fact it is straight up and down for the most part. Not sure if we ever even heard a gobbler on the flats.......ONLY on the steepest parts did we get into them. I think the statutes of limitations have passed on all infractions though. Talk about feeling like a fool..............

Lawdwaz
I only post my mistakes to keep others safe. Always read ALL the regs...............closely. There were NO signs posted at the entrance or anywhere in the park when I hunted it. Now they could be, I'm not sure http://nysparks.com/parks/164/hunting.aspx I know guys that have hunted (and still do) the park for 40+ years for turkey and have never had an issue. Deer hunting is OK, but not in the late season. NO small game hunting at all..............
Skillet
Honest mistake Lawdwaz. I bet those guys have never had a problem because even the encon guys don't know it's not allowed.
growalot
That's funny for I know of several guys busted in that General area..hunting over cut 50# bags of corn and shooting the DEC turkey decoy from vehicals....in fact it seems the only real poaching/ baiting arrests they do is during the turkey season around here.
