dd61999
I have several people interested in hunting but there are no classes available at all in the Long Island area for the next few months There used to be several classes a month, what is going on
WNYBuckHunter
Ive noticed that they offer the courses alot for the months before the seasons open, then they trail off for a while. Keep your eyes open and keep checking the schedules.
bubba
As a 25 plus year instructor, I used to hold a class every two months. The only time the classes fill up are just before seasons such as spring turkey and fall deer. I have had classes in june and july with three or four signing up. then from augist to to december I get constant calls to have a class. When I do have one in september, it sills quickly, then I get the calls of peole bitching me out because the class is full and they cant find one Umm from September to December, I am hunting. I would suggest you sign up to be an instrctor to help assist with filling the void. No bitterness there, but if you were certified, you could give all those looking for a class, a class. Instructors are mandated to have a class once a year to stay certified. some only do that.

SteveMcD
I've been a NY DEC Instructor for almost 20 years myself. And share the same experiences as Bubba. Other point is.. we want to go hunting too! There always seems to be a shortage of instructors though. Three Years hunting experience, no game violations and 18 years of age is all it takes to sign up. You start up as an apprentice with a "Master" or senior instructor for a year, then you get fully certified. It is our way of giving back to the sport that we love and no doubt has shaped our lives to some extent. My mentor.. said to me.. the thing about being a good instructor is.. "you have to want to teach".
