Quick what to do...

Recommended Posts

The lower field has come back with grass and fall weeds that popped out of the ground with full seed heads...no really they are only 3 inches high and all seed....waste more time spraying and waiting are just go down there today disc the hell out of it and lay down the  Max attract.....Huh? I can't get any links to allow me to copy????

Any ways... grains, chicory, clovers, peas, and beans...I was going to lay over more clover alfalfa and chicory with it to make a perennial plot for a few years....... but could go with a turnip walk over in stead and call it a day.... what do you think?

Sometimes the weather and conditions dictate the best possible planting rather than our best planning.

Sounds like you are dealing with prolific weeds that will still put energy into seeding after mowing or late germination. A hot does of Gly in my mind is probably best because of the weather outlook, a little bit of rain still in the mix and some mix of warm sunny weather. It'll help the plant uptake the gly and start the wilt process. Certain weeds will race to seed, but if you apply now, there's a chance you'll be fine depending on where the seed heads are in development.

Mowing them, if they are close to being ready, or discing....probably does just as much damage as doing nothing, except giving them a clean bed to start to grow on, and you'll be back in a few weeks with the same issue.

If most of your weeds are grass based, I'd probably plant something that will survive a following clethodim spray in mid/late August.

Well the breeze is blowing pretty good and rain due for next several days...I can't risk drift into my clover plot next to this nor the trees..... So I grabbed the tractor and I'm discing the crud out of it...cripes it's just a never ending bubbling of rocks down there ...any ways back to grab diesel can and will finish it up...then take the drag down there.. teeth down and log on top and drag the cud out of it I'll hopefully get it planted before the next rain...grows it grows ...somethings gotta come up...if I get this done maybe just maybe I can work  on the rest of my stuff...like the blind base and the fencing and the rest of the field and the....  .....   .....

So today I went down sightedness and worked the field several Times.. I tied two maple logs to the drag for extra.weight...ripped out a lot of weeds/grass the several disc runs didn't get...I had done a grid then went diagonal over it.

Rain started as soon as I was done...so I'll see what will come up after the next few days of rain. Then go down disc in seed... hanging the drag off the back of disc.

  • 2 weeks later...

a one inch deep cultivations now and just before you plant the field (10-20 days from now) will probably work without the need to use round-up.   Last year I planted buckwheat @ 80 lbs  to the acre  I combined the buckwheat disced it up and in August I planted winter barley over-seeding it with clover @5 lbs/acre and then lightly rolled the whole field.  Except for the ridiculous  rain we got in June I would have had a great barley crop ....instead I lost the entire barley field but the clover came in beautiful with few weeds. (THe turkeys really loved that field)  If you want a weed free field without chemicals  planting buckwheat at 80 lbs/acre works every time.If you want to make some money  figure out how to confine 20-30 feeder pigs  in an move them every 30 days or so to another part of the field....... they will eat everything including the nuts from yellow nut-sedge.turn the filed over as good as a plow and fertilize for free..... In the fall you sell the pigs. (They will even move many of the rocks to the edge of the field for free)   If you have a lot of tree stumps to remove......... 4 pigs. a bag of corn, a gallon of molasses and 3-5 days.....the stump is NO more ...   The trick is to keep the pigs confined  ...believe me thats the trick

Ya we still have the concrete filled steel poles in the ground that held up the hog panels when we raised feed pigs for 4-H. The first pen they would escape once in a while and chase our Shepherd through the woods as she would try herding them to the house.that was always a fun several hour round up    Good thing they were being trained for the ring.

I love my buckwheat......first plots I started out new land in here followed up by WR. I'm thinking that with the amount of brassicas I put down and the amount of Max Attract I should be able to smoother out most weeds I'll see how every thing comes in and then decide whether to over seed with more turnips or clovers in a week or two...planting now gives me that option.
