Torn between 2 shotguns

Recommended Posts

The misses is letting me enter the vault and buy a new toy lol. I'm looking at a mossberg 500 and a remington 870 in 20ga with a 26in barrel that I plan on using for early season squirrel hunting and can swing into turkey action once I learn more. The issue I'm having is that the 500 has wood furniture and I'm not the biggest fan of wood on guns but the polymer 870 doesn't have sling attachments. I'm always iffy on wood because of the possibility of warping. Do you guys find that warping is an issue of any real concern? As for the remington, it's only 8lbs so would the absence of a sling be a deal breaker for you?

G-Man is right on the money. For a smoothbore shotgun, warping will not be an issue. And the 500 is a great gun!

I have owned a Deer slayer 2 for over 20 years with a nice walnut stock and never had a warping problem with it or any other wood stock firearm. And have had it out in all kinds of nasty weather. Still shoots two inch groups at a hundred yards.

For the sling issue, you can use the same slings they sell for side by side shotguns.

It has adjustable loops at either end, one goes over the but stock just behind the wrist and the other over the barrel.  Works very well.  So I wouldn't let lack of sling studs force your choice.
