RoadKill44 Thankyou for sharing Your Dad's journal.Many folks on this site say to show pictures or it did not happen you did.My Dad/oleman was born in 1935 he would be 81 this april and showed and taught me most of what I use every day.I am not sure exact year my Dad started Hunting Deer but he had to be atleast 14 if leagal/or not then he also was a farmers son and worked for the town.

That would be a .38-40, then...Nice vintage rifle...Surely you have seen the movie " Winchester 73"....

 

I had an 1889 Marlin in that caliber, but I sold it..One of several guns that I am sorry I parted with.
