I saw this article just now, and, having read this thread earlier this morning, I thought I'd share it.  The article discusses advancements in trail cams, but it doesn't discuss "affordable."  I thought it might help in balancing the decision between affordability and technological advancements:

I have several Moultries, A5 game spy and am pleased with the price (+/-  $70, if you shop around) quality and longevity. I prefer to use video as opposed to still pics and have always been happy with the results

I bought 2 Stealthcam's from Sportsman's Guide for under $50.00 each. I've used both for 2 years so far without any issues. Video too.
