Fertilizer help

Recommended Posts

Howdy all. Getting ready to try a small food plot this spring. Got a soil test done from whitetail institute. The first fertilizer they recommend is 6-12-12 and I can't seem to locate any. Lowes has it on there web site but can't order it online. Kind of dumb. Next one is a mix of 10-10-10 and 0-20-20 but can't locate the latter. Any advice on where I might search or any rcomendations for something that's close. Plan on just trying some clover this year. Any help greatly appreciated

You will have to get something close to it and adjust the poundage rate.

You need to take your soil sample to a local Agway and show it to them.  They will find something similar and adjust the rate.

So - as an example - your 6-12-12 (at 200 lbs per acre) may become 15-15-15 at 100 lbs per acre.

Or - as another example - You mix 125 lbs of 12-12-12 with 25 pounds of 0-10-10.

Find a local small Agway(ish) type store and take your soil sample to them.

The numbers (10-10-10 for example) represent % amounts in each bag... in this case 10% Nitrogen (first #), 10% Phosphorus (second #) and 10% Potassium (third#).  Find something close to the soil test recommendations and do the math to get nearly equivalents. Generally speaking, lower Nitrogen and higher Phosphorus and Potassium are for new plantings. Nitrogen pushes green growth and is used later during the vegetative stages.
