Compases

Today while washing clothes and treating them, I also decided to make sure all flashlights and my headlamp had fresh batteries and were working. Among things I decided to check were my compasses. WOW!

I have a pretty old plastic lensatic style compass, and another I bought a few years back when I got back into hunting which is a Cammenga . Well, the old crappy was was so far off from north is was almost funny. It had north way off, and pointed way SW. The Cammenga pointed a pretty hard NE. Now, I do understand that most ( I think all ) compasses do not point true north, they point magnetic north. But- both of my compasses were way off. I can understand the cheapy one that's probably 20+ years old being off, but the other one not so much. I thought Cammengo are the company building the military's compasses?

Looks Like I will be in the market for a new compass before 10/20/19.

Any suggestions?

Silly question. Why waiting til 10-20-2019 to buy a new one ?

Because next year I will be in the ADK's in unfamiliar territory, so I will have to have a good compass if I get turned around in the big woods.

I am pretty familiar with the areas I hunt now, and most have roads that intersect the land, so as long as I keep my wits about me, I won't be lost. If I do get lost in less then 3000 acres with roads running through, I will magically have a truck appear, use the hood for shelter, burn a tire as an emergency signal, and a film crew will show up and tell me they filmed an episode Dual Survival with just one survivor without my knowledge.
