Cabin Fever
Has anyone tried planting chufa for turkeys? Wondering how it would grow in NY?
Doewhacker
Chufa? Sounds like a dirty word. lol
G-Man
they(nwtf) tested it here, the problem is they've (turkeys)never seen it and will not know to scratch for it(hopefully you dont have a clay base soil like most of us in ny so they can scratch for it) so they recomend you disc up part of the plot to expose the tubers. The problem with this is you need the turkeys to get into the plot to begin with... the real question is what are trying to draw the turkeys in fall/spring? there are lots of things that will bring turkey in the fall like iron to a magnet that grow well in ny buckwheat, oats. spring..winter wheat and a clover/alfalfa and left over corn. Cabin Fever
I plant wheat, oats, and rye every year. Also, I have established clover plots. I'm going to replant one plot in a couple of weeks with clover/chicory/and mix in some alfalfa to try. I watched some shows recently about how wonderful chufa is and how turkeys love it. I was just wondering if it would grow this far north. I'm surrounded by corn and soybeans. Thought I might try something new, that's all! Fantail
burmjohn; I like how the Turkeys sort of lined up at the edge of the plot! They sure started picking through it alright. Spring planting? Cool video.
