cnymuzguy
http://dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=smokeless Pretty much everything that can be covered is covered on this page. I've been shooting one for 5 yrs. Its deadly when you find the right loads. XTP's and SST's seem to be the most consistent and accurate bullets, but SST's seem a little thin in the jacket. I use a light load 38 gr of VV110 with 200 gr 40 cal SST's and it will the holes will touch at 100 yds. Every rifle is different so you just have to play with it. Barnes X bullets are tougher but a little more touchy in the accuracy department.
rock
i have had one since 2007 love it 67 grains imr 4198 300 grain bonded shock wave very consistant up to 300 yards just like any gun shoot it till it feel like part of you do everything the same an remember smokless powder is measured by weight not volume do your home work on it and you will be fine stay consistant is the key
sampotter
Ever use 5744? Also- why is it a problem if the petals on the sabot are long?
cnymuzguy
5744 is an excellent powder that ignites well and is very consistent with bullets in the 200-250 gr. range. If the petals on the sabot extend past the bullet too far, the loading jag on the end of the ramrod can cause the petals to pinch against the rifling, or bend the tips, thereby damaging the sabot. It could affect the accuracy of the load.
MACHINIST
I shoot the savage also and its by far my favorite rifle,I shoot 5744 and a 260 grain dead center bullet.Out to 200 yards there isn't a deer thats safe, this is my last buck with it.shot him in 09 on the lsat minute of late muzzle loader season
Zhe Wiz
I use 58 grains of VVH N120 under a 300 grain Barnes Original. Very accurate out of my thumbhole Savage.
MACHINIST
How does the barnes do on deer?I have been thinking of trying a different powder and getting a good scale also.
Zhe Wiz
How does the barnes do on deer?I have been thinking of trying a different powder and getting a good scale also. I've killed 3 deer with that bullet and load. 1 at 100-110 yards, double lung, she ran 75 yards. 1 at 40 yards, double lung she went 50. And the best? A small buck quartering at 30 yards, double lung, missed both legs, but DRT. That last one was the most impressive. Knocked him head over heels, thought I had broken his far side leg, but it was untouched. Small sample size so far, but I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. gjs4
If you were so far away I would say stop by Few buddies and i are knee deep in them and have been for years. One buddy has a 45 pacnor, another a 40 and 45 rem (cant use the 40 here) and mods them himself with adding the third pilar and cryo. 5744 isnt bad- like 4759 better. 4198 let me down in cold temps and i shoot reloader 7 now. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW ABOUT SAVAGES IS THEY ALL LIKE DIFFERENT LOADS. I shoot a stout load pushing a 300gr barnes original which took me alot of playing to find. My farthest kill was 310yds and i have flattened many from 5 yards to 250. Zeroed at 200 it is a point and pull for a guy who practices. The changes barrel guns shoot even flatter. The pacnor set up Bill has will be near 2k so it comes down to budget too. Add a boyds thumbhole and aftermarket trigger to a bunch of bench time and you have a ml that will shoot with a rifle reliably. email me with any questions....i have posted a few times about it on here....google dougs savage ml forums.....ton of info there
