phantom
A hunter was attacked and killed by a grizzly bear in an Alaska state park – a first in the nature preserve, officials announced. The victim was in Alaska’s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve during a 10-day moose hunting trip on Sunday when the bear attacked, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) announced Tuesday. The hunter, whose name, age and gender were not immediately released, was in the area of the Chisana River drainage with a friend at the time.

Most of Alaska does not have a special archery season...Moose season is moose season and you can carry any legal weapon you want...many people who choose to bowhunt carry heavy caliber handguns or compact shotguns or rifles while bowhunting as bear protection.. My most sincere condolences to the survivors of the victim... As sensational as such stories are, bear maulings are relatively rare, even in Alaska I have hunted there five times an encountered perhaps a dozen grizzlies, and never had an issue... Still, the possibility is always present..When I was hunting there, I never went ANYWHERE without my rifle, including going out behind the camp to answer the call of nature.. It was always a somewhat tense while we were packing meat, or especially approaching a kill to bring out a second or third load...We made lots of noise on the approach, and everybody was locked, loaded and alert when we approached the meat pole or kill site..

46rkl
Very sad news. Condolences to his family. I travelled through ANWR on a rafting trip on the Hula Hula river for ten days with my wife and young son. We were part of a group of ten, including my sister-in-law, her husband and son and a friend of theirs. I had read about the deaths by Grizzly of a young couple on their honeymoon. Floating along one day we passed two crosses along the riverbank and everyone got real quiet. Grizzlies were a common site, multiple sittings daily. We set up electric fencing around our compound every evening (although the sun never set) and never had any real problems. Just a few close encounters. The funny part was that our guide handed me a Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 mag the first day of the trip and asked me if I would carry it since he was such a lousy shot. That was the greatest adventure I’ve ever been on but a very sobering moment that reminds one where we sit on the food chain..... without any self defense, that is.
