RELOADING 16 GAUGE

Recommended Posts

I could use some help - :fie: Am reloading some new 16 gauge hulls and although I am following the reloading tables, my final crimp is pushed in to where I can still see the pellets. Almost seems that the hull is to long OR there is not enough fill to provide a good crimp. Here is what I am using:

HULL: Cheddite 16 gauge - new 2 3/4"

POWDER: 27 grains -Blue Dot

WAD: Remington SP16 1 1/8 ounce

LEAD: 1 1/8 oz 7.5

Wad pressure is minimal.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I started off by having to purchase new hulls as I had none. These were Cheddite primed hulls. Although I had several bags of Remington SP16 wads, the height resulted in the 1 1/8 oz load of shot being too low to make a good crimp. So I ordered new wads that were taller and a bag of overshot cards. This combination made a big difference. Now the crimps look good and I was even able to use the SP16 wads with the overshot cards and the crimp looks much better also. I use the loading for grouse, pheasant, rabbit and snowshoe hares.

Thanks for the reply defrazzle. I haven't reloaded in over 30 years. I've got a Mec 600jr. 12ga. when I was 17 yrs old, I'm 59 now. Me and my buddy use to load shoe boxes full. We'd buy a couple cases of clay pigeons and a hand thrower and have a blast!

I used Red Dot for target loads. I see you using Blue Dot, and I remember that being used for hunting loads, that's why I asked.

Well good luck with your load, happy hunting!

I'm now a Kansas hunter and some years ago sold my 16-gauge. Now I am house cleaning and am inventorying just how many CASES of new, primed Remington 16-ga hulls I have so I can put them on craigslist. My long-time "pathology" is "stuff," but at late-60s age it's time to start thinning it out. Looking at prices, hulls seem to go around $14/100, new in box. So I am thinking $7/100 new in box. The Remington stock code on these is S23478.

Not sure how these would ship, but if anyone's interested email me ([email protected]) and we'll figure it out. My guess is UPS-ground; I can ship from a local FFL if need be.

BTW, I have listed now an old but nice Deitemeyer 16-ga reloader. I didn't know what to ask, so just took a flyer but no responses yet. See http://lawrence.craigslist.org/spo/3136575445.html

Hi Geepee - wish you had posted this a couple of months ago. I ended up ordering my hulls and now have plenty. Your price right.

I do like that 16 gauge re-loader and it looks very robust. I use a Lee loader that I purchased in 1977 - although not as beefy as yours it does load nice shells, came with all the shot and powder bushings you will ever need and works well. $29.00. I think your market for your loader is a "collector of loaders". Unless your loader comes with all bushings you may have a hard time selling it. IMHO

You can buy a brand new Lee 16 gauge loader for $80.00 .

I didn't have (obviously!) a clue what the loader might bring, so just thought I'd float it out and see what happened. Basically if I took $25 for it it'd be better than taking it to the recycle place locally. It has just one set of bushings-- I use my MECs for 20 and 12 and they have adjustable bars.

I'll have a local friend put the hulls on gunbroker or auctionarms. With the price of components, the primers ought to be worth a fair amount even with pushing them out! Not that I need primers myself though.... LOL!

Thanks! I'll take a look. One person asked, via email, a key question re the hulls, so I checked. ALL of them have primers that are non-209s. Again, I had no idea 16s early on didn't use a 209 primer. I've used 209s in 12s for ages. I put the hulls on craigslist, as someone may have use of them. If no, then landfill.

Some info: Those Remington hulls use the old #57 primer (as opposed to the larger #97 Remington primer.) The #57 is slightly smaller in size than the current "209" style. They are a one-time proposition unless you have a stock of old primers. Those primers have been out of use for almost four decades. My guess too is those hulls have the old-style fiber base. There is load data out there that still works for them. I have a stock of the same hulls and use them. And I'm down to the last of my #57 stock; only 300 primers left!

The O.D. of the # 57's is approx. .230", while the 209 & 97's are approximately .245"

I'll start this off by saying I know absolutely nothing about reloading. But I will start this thread for others to follow along with my progress and results. In the hope it will help someone else get started too.
There is already a wealth of good information right here on this site. I will be taking advantage of that! And also asking advice from some members here, who have years of experience to pull from.
I picked up the reloading kit from Billdogge tonight. Thanks again Bill! So the first thing I need to do, is get started here.....

I have up for sale a complete set to get someone into the hobby of reloading. I only loaded for one caliber .30-06.  Great starter set for someone just starting out. Here is a list of what is included:

1: RCBS vibratory case cleaner (also have a box of walnut tumbling media that will go with this)
2: Book: The ABC's of Reloading
3: Book: Lyman Reloading Handbook 46th Edition
4: Books: Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading both 3rd and 8th editions
5: Redding single stage O frame press
      6: Hornady Powder Measure
      7: Lyman case trimmer
      8: Hornady powder trickler
      9: RCBS case deburr tool
      10: Case filling funnel
11: Case lube pad and case lube
      12: Primer tray
13: Sinclar Stainless ultimate trimmer with .30-06 case holder
14: RCBS Reloading Dies for .30-06
      15: Lee Decapping Die
      16: 2 plastic storage organizers
      17: 2 case holding trays
      18: 1 ammo box, holds 50 rounds
19: Hornady powder beam scale. Update (found the tray that goes with the beam scale so that is now complete)

All in good useable condition. I'm looking to sell this all as one lot.  I've looked up the price of all of this new, and took 50% off new price and did not even figure in cost on some of the smaller items. With that said I'm firm on a price of $350 for everything listed here. Please contact via email only at [email protected] .  I'm located in Sherrill, NY Thanks for looking

Some time ago I wrote articles for another NY forum long gone now and, my topics were based around reloading. So here is the question. Would any of you be interested in reading my articles on getting started in reloading? Post up and let me know, if I get some interest I will post the two beginner articles and see how it goes from there.
