Whats best to plant in a secret spot?

Recommended Posts

ok not really a secret spot, but more or less my "honey hole". cant get any sort of vehicle back there to till or plow or anything. ive seen some throw and grow, secret spot, etc marketed for this type of area. but im trying to get the food plot gurus in on this one. id like to plant here soon after turkey season as ill also be putting up a new stand in the area. so if i can get in there, plant something and put a stand and camera in all at the same time it would be great. any thoughts? thanks for the help!

All the companies out there have a throw and grow that would work in your area but my personal favorite is secret spot. With a leaf blower and a rack you can get down to the dirt and thats really all thats needed for these seeds to grow. (good soil contact) I think the only delemna you will have is your desire to put the plot in this early. If it doesn't have some size to it, you run the real risk of having it eatin' down to the dirt before the season rolls around. Your in Newark which is not far from me and i know there is alot of great deer turf out there with good deer numbers. Thats why most often we like to plant these annuals late in the summer and hope the deer are busy eating the farmers soybeans and clover and soft mast thats pretty abundant that time of year. I have planted two secret spot plots in June before and they both made it just fine into the season but they were both more than 1/4 acre plots and they weren't far from 13acres of other planted food. I guess it can't hurt to try it youself in June. You won't know until you see what happens. If they do eat it down, you may just have to rough it up and overseed it in mid to late Aug again.

We had good luck with throw and grow. Deer, turkey and bear really liked it. Follow Dave's suggestions, that is how we did it. Wasn't a big plot and didn't get eaten down, then again it was a stop over on the way to corn.

Gander Mountain and Dicks usually carry Secret Spot as well as other Brands of no-til seeds. You can find many other ag stores carrying some food plot seeds as well and you can always have Secret Spot shipped from Whitetail Institute. Last time i looked they had free shipping deal going on.
