  1. Grats to those who got it done, didn't even see a squirrel during daylight today.
  2. Did a 11 hour sit yesterday, bumped a spike on my way out Today will rain luck upon me though, for I am hunting alone and in a world of work if I do see a monster.
  3. 4z checking in- Been on an all day sit, seen 6 jakes, 2 crows, a hawk, woodpecker, and thats it. I'm getting very discouraged.
  4. Trail cams showed deer buttoning down about 3am. Cold and windy with no life yet
  5. Up and at 'em ladies and gents! Deer aint gonna shoot themselves. Got high hopes today.
  6. Bumped a buck trying to find a glove lost when I took the bear last night. Gave em a good yell he paused and gave a broadside, but my standing game at 40y wasn't on point in the cold and I completely missed, fellow hunter walking back to his car confirmed the buck bounding across his path 200 yards away with no issues. 2 hours of looking for blood and a bad hit yielded nothing. Worried that was my chance this year :(
  7. Sitting in a blind, cold AF, rains coming down, its windy, and everything's so soggy in the woods I doubt I'd hear a deer pass. Better than work though.
  8. Thank you. Never had bear before, but I really kind of wanted a rug, now I'll have both. Anyone got any good recipes? WIndy as hell out here, didn't see anything else move. The wind was so noisey I didn't even hear this guy until he was about 30 yards away.
  9. Got it done. Wasn't the done I was expecting, but I'll take it.
  10. I don't think this is a matter of "how far they can see" but a matter of what they think the sphere of influence is and *if* they see you. Think of it like us, assuming normal vision, we can see a really decent ways, but we don't need all that information, generally we're paying attention to things a lot closer to us. I think deer are like this too, when it comes to stuff thats going to influence their behavior, I'm guessing they make decisions much closer to them than what they actually see. With that said, I think deer might have a hard time discriminating human hunting behaviors, and at least in this region, I'm not convinced they look up. By discriminating hunting behaviors, its pretty obvious deer don't give a shit about you in a car driving along, but stop the car and they take notice but continue to do what they do. Open the door and present yourself they tend to bolt. There might be a learned behavior there, but its my feeling that they don't consider you as being a piece of your vehicle, as such, I think when they see a hunter in say, a treestand- especially one with a cover, it might not trip their pattern recognition. Why then do some deer avoid me in my treestand? Well I'm going with human scent, or I'm going with they're not avoiding you in the treestand, they're avoiding the stand. They may have learned that that stand makes loud noises and is scary, or get spooked by the presence of your stand from prior hunts and learn to avoid. As far as being busted and avoiding a stand, this is probably a cost:reward mechanism. A doe might bust a hunter in a stand and never have an issue, whereas a buck might bust a hunter in a stand and get shot and and get skinned or miss (especially when you count in the archers). The bucks are going to learn quicker stand = bad if they survive their encounter. Getting busted by a buck with experience is going to be far more detrimental to you (as in the buck is more likely to avoid) than perhaps getting busted by a spike or a doe.
  11. I won't use anything thats not all natural. I was looking at a forehead gland scent the other day to see if I could get a mock scrape going in front of a camera for kicks, but the scent didn't smell right. Sure enough, looking on line the "gland" scent contained coconut and cinnamon. Deer got a really picky nose, you can't just introduce foreign scents and expect consistent results, some bucks are going to run from that shit.
  12. Started getting daytime pictures last week, now I"m seeing daytime deer pictures every day, today I had pictures of a six pointer bedding down in the open timber between noon and about 3pm, there was another deer not far away, honestly I think it was another buck, not sure what that means for the rut, but if it's not in full swing it's ramping up.
  13. This is good info, my H2 shipped today. What are you using for a platform?
  14. Thanks all! Sounds like I'll be fine, so +1 stand for the saddle.
  15. I hunt down in Columbia County, so this is like 2 counties over. I've been tracking 5 deer on my property this year, significantly less than prior years.
  16. Wonder if this explains the low deer numbers I've been seeing on the trail cameras this year and the dead mature buck skeleton I came across.
  17. Oh man, I haven't had a killer strawberry rhubarb pie since my great grandmother passed.
