And transporting across state lines in 2024. Starting to see this show up on a few outlets. Anyone else seeing this or have information?

    Nope haven’t seen a thing

However I wouldn’t doubt it ..assume it would be hard to enforce ..

    People better start waking up

Have you checked the ridge line along the ravine for trails and sign? It looks like a great route for deer to travel to get from one ag field to the other.

That white spot (Fo) does look like a great place to get that whole field covered with rifle. For observation purposes if nothing else, to see just where the deer come out into the field.

Is that whole field covered with goldenrod? There is some strange looking pattern in the field that looks like some of it has been mowed already.

I have a stand in that ridge line now , killed two bucks there this year and see lots of does..

that whole field IS golden rod with a roadway all the way around it you can see in the one photo

there is a gravel bed at 1:00/ 2:00

The only issue with that whit spot is in watching a golden rod field , and it gets tall.

Now maybe if I mow some paths thru it ?

Get a temporary ladder stand up, and observe. See where they are. You can do that year round. Be mindful of prevailing wind and your backdrop.

The more I think about it the more I’m thinking out it in the woods

watching a golden rod field doesn’t sound like a good thing even if I mow a 1/2 acre in the middle with trails going to it

Best thing I ever did was to keep a field of goldenrod mowed. It's in the middle of the woods and the deer, bear and Turkey just love it.

That’s why I’m thinking of mowing a 1/2 acre in the center of it and mow a path from the woods to it

By the way, is the new stand for this year or next?

Also, what kind of sign (and where) have you seen throughout the area Trails, rubs, scrapes, and actual sighting (where and what time of day).

The new stand is for next year . Lots of sign , rubs , and I hunted the area this year and saw lots of deer. Killed two bucks on the upper blue dot , killed two there last year too.

I was just thinking of an additional spot to not keep using the same stand

Maybe I’m better off putting it where the lower blue dot is in the woods

if you look one of those ag field fingers comes very close to the property line so maybe just south of that lower blue dot closer to the line

What kinds of crops are in the north and south fields? The trees to the west.....Are there acorn bearing oaks in there? Are any of those areas in or bordering thick dense brush? I am trying to get an idea of where the bedding areas might be and the feeding patterns.

Also, are these stands for gun (rife or shotgun) or for bowhunting? That will determine how far from the deer the stand should be located.

Is that creek-bed a deep ravine with steep sides? What is the normal prevailing wind directions? Is the area generally flat?

Fields are rotated , beans and corn .west prevailing winds, yes the creek bed is in deep ravine , it’s walkable though . No oak trees . Some brushy fragmities by the creek ..

I think they bed in the golden rod

I try like heck to knock them down in the woods enough that they don't get to the goldenrod. It is a nightmare to find them when they do without snow. They can be a couple feet in front of you and still not be seen.

I’m thinking they bed in the goldenrod and if I brushog off a big area and plant clover , that may be my food plot

I like to put my stands in corners, brushy travel corridors, and pinch points.

I also try to position my stands so I''m shooting into my property, and far enough into my property that any final bolt a deer might make after being shot has it die or bed down on my land.  If you have good neighbors it might be a different set of factors for you.

If you are good with neighbors I would have a stand at the lower blue line in the strip between the triangle wooded area pointing down and the square located in the upper that is outlined in red.

If not good with the neighbors, I would have a stand in the pinch point between the same square and the white spot (Fo) that are all outlined in red.

Yea I’m good with neighbors both north and south .

Ive always hunted in the woods but I’m sure they bed in that golden rod

  9. Ok I have 60 acres to hunt myself , I have a treestand on the two blue dots, the field is all golden rod but I can brushog a section down to let the clover and grass grow up for feed.

I do that now in the upper left corner and the deer come in there to eat a lot .

Now I have one more stand to put up .

Im thinking of putting it on the point of that white spot which is all timber and wet at times.

I thought then I could brushog the goldenrod in like 1/2 acre area and out my stand facing that big field . Catch the bedding deer or the deer coming from the ag fields to the north and south

    thoughts ?

My father in law has one of those large black Jet sleds up at his place in the mountains.  Ive never used it on a deer, but it does work great for ice fishing.  When I get out on the ice, I sometimes take everything out of it and stand it up in the flat end, for a windbreak.

It is so big and bulky, that it seems like it would be tough to get into most of the spots that I’d need to drag deer out of.  I did kill this heavy Adirondack buck down in a gully up there back in 2014, and there’s no way I could have got that sled in there.

Manually dragging that one, about 100 yards through the thick brushy creek bottom to where I could get to it with an ATV, was as hard as I’ve ever worked for a deer in NY state.

If I ever kill another bigger one down there, I’d probably break it down where it dropped, and just haul out the meat.  You might want to consider that for your gully spot.

I dragged a nice 8 point out of the gully by myself a few years ago thru deep snow and all uphill !

I was sweating like a Banchee

I always pack light.  3 ft of nylon rope and a butt-out tool work ok dragging, especially if there is a little snow.

I have very rarely needed to drag one further than about 50 yards, to where I could get at it with a tractor, field-car or ATV.

When I’m hunting the mountains, in areas without atv or tractor access, I try and do it mostly at higher elevations, such that the drag will be downhill.

The farthest that I ever dragged a deer (when I was in my early thirties) was about 5 miles thru the Rocky Mountains.  I’m in my late 50’s now, but in as good or better shape than I was back then.

Staying in decent physical condition does not take that much effort, and it makes a lot of sense for more than just keeping the ability to drag out a deer carcass.

If it’s getting harder for you to drag out a deer, consider getting yourself a stationary bike and/or a rowing machine and get yourself back into shape.

If you’re so “stove-up” now, that you don’t think you could drag a 150 pound deer carcass out of a particular spot, you probably should not be venturing there alone for any reason, anyhow.

    I run 6 miles almost everyday , the days I don’t I bike 20 miles.

    I take Sundays off .

I have a heart stent that was done 13 yrs ago when every Dr said the pressure I was feeling was a pulled muscle … 98 percent blocked LAD..

Lucky one Dr listened and sent me for an angio

My main issue is my shoulders . And now a ruptured bicep..

Both shoulders have impingement of rotator cuff

My dragging at the place I’d need the sled is a gully that’s mostly uphill on the way out , I’ve dragged several out of here the last few years and it wasn’t easy .. thru deep snow on one ..

Ill try the sled , it’s also handy for hauling in my two ground blinds and office chairs :)

I had it on my shotgun, in a few yrs it starts peeling off.

    Yea that’s kinda what I figured .

I sprayed my .243 , it came out decent , I masked off the scope eye pcs

I may just do the forend and stick with paint

It probably doesn’t do anything but make it look better to me , I’m sure deer don’t care
