I too sent in the form and received a permit to use an unmodified crossbow in regular archery season. Mine is permanent and good for five years.
I messed up because I checked the box “ temporary “
But they said if it turn into permanent they can reissue next year
maybe by then they will open it for everyone .
I wish they would give me a permit to use rifle during bow
I still have a hard time pulling back the crossbow plus I could get out before it gets real cold .. I’m getting soft in my old age
the Dr tells me this is a rotor cuff impingement .. I’m icing it and doing the exercises but I don’t see any improvement
they want me to take meloxicam but I’m reading the side effects and it doesn’t sound good

That permit is to allow hunters "with a permanent physical disability (verified by a licensed physician) to use a crossbow equipped with a breath-tube apparatus for releasing the bowstring".
Nope … it’s for people with an injury that can’t pull back a bow , the permit says right on it “ for use with an UNmodified crossbow to be used during regular bow
I applied for mine online and received it in less than an hour
Mine is temporary unless my shoulder doesn’t heal, then can be made permanent
Maybe there is one for cases like you described too ???

I was in the woods yesterday morning for half an hour.. below freezing, thought I had a thorn on my pant leg ..
Fricken tick walking up my leg

I have a friend that had a place in Rochester apply it
He seems to think it’s great

Unless you do it yourself, you really don’t know for certain how long it was aged before it was froze. My money is still on, that it wasn’t long enough to get past rigor mortis.
Maybe the guy lost track of how long it was in there, or grabbed one from the wrong end of the rail by mistake. Maybe the temperature regulation got messed up and everything in the cooler froze solid.
Yea wasnt froze until I got it home .
And it was in my barn for two days before I took it over , shot it Friday afternoon , took it in Monday am
It was skinned and hung … well past rigor

And how do you age your venison?
Sorry just saw this ..
For the last 7 yrs I’ve done the same , or should I say my butcher has .
He has a huge walk-in that he leaves skinned deer hanging in for 7 days or more.
This deer was done the same as I’ve been going to him as I said , for 7 years .
Ive for sure shot bigger deer than this one but NEVER had the backstraps be tough like this one .
And I cook them rare …

They do not load a cartridge. They load a bullet down the muzzle and a powder charge cartridge in the breech. So they actually are a muzzleloader as far as the bullet goes, but not as far as the powder goes. That's why some states are not allowing them.
Remember, we are talking about a "special" season, not the general rifle deer season. What makes it "special" are the limitations imposed to take part in it. Chip away at the limits and you risk elimination of the "special" season.
My bad , I thought they were a cartridge like a shotgun slug

ML seasons were devised after rifle technology had advanced far beyond black powder. They were meant to allow hunters to challenge themselves with primitive weapons. A special season was allowed due to the difficulty of being successful and low harvest expectations. PA still has a flintlock only season that won't allow caplocks to be used.
Technology advanced in ML with inlines and states allowed inlines to be used, but only if they had to be loaded from the muzzle. The new powder cartridge breach loaded, but muzzle stuffed bullet rifles are not being accepted in many states and may prove to be the straw that breaks the camel's back for ML rifle approval. That may be where ML technology draws the line.
A cartridge loaded single shot is never going to be considered a primitive weapon because it's loaded with a complete cartridge. Should that be allowed in a ML season? If so, I could use my Ruger No. 1B in .30-06 to hunt deer during ML season. That rifle has many advantages over any ML, old school or inline, and just doesn't fit the primitive weapon idea.
Archery tackle has always been advancing since the first archery season was offered, so the equipment kept getting more efficient and complicated. Buit the crossbow has people starting to question if that is something that should be allowed during archery season, because it detracts from the original idea of using a string and stick bow in a challenging way. A crossbow certainly makes it easier for a hunter to be successful in bow season, but is that what these challenging seasons are supposed to be doing? Making the challenge easier?
If so, I expect harvest success rates will go up and the season lengths and doe permits will go down because the season will have a much stronger effect on herd control.
The cartridge loaded fire stick , are they legal in NY ??
If so then the description of a muzzleloader needs to be changed right ?
-
So… the federal and traditions “ fire stick” loads like a single shot shotgun but it’s legal as a muzzleloader right ?
Even though it’s not

It’s probably tough because it was frozen before it got past rigor-mortis. That’s a very common mistake with deer hunters, and a critical part of the process if you like your red meat tender.
Several ways to fix that now:
1) Take the frozen meat to a processor and have them grind it for sausage , hot-dogs, etc.
2) Get a pressure cooker, thaw it out, chunk it up, and can it.
To prevent future occurrence, age the carcasses before processing at 33 - 43 F for 5 days if 1.5 yr old, 7 days if 2.5 yr old, 10 days if older. An old refrigerator with the racks removed works perfect for that, if the outside temperature is too warm.
Nope, I’ve processed many many deer and I did this one the same was as always .
All my meat is aged the same way..

Try cutting as much of the fat off the meat as you can. That's where the gamey taste and toughness will generally come from.
That is my primary suggestion, other than that, you may try some type of overnight marinate with diet cherry coke. Someone suggested this to me many years ago and I'm just now remembering it.
There is no fat at all on it

I tried the baking soda because I didn’t have any kiwi
It is more tender but seems like it took all the natural flavor out of it
-
The one buck I shot this year seems tough ..
Killed it with the crossbow during the rut , not sure if that matters ..
Even the backstrap seemed tough.
So my Chinese buddy said use baking soda to tenderize it .
You guys ever try that ??

I pulled two off a few months ago , wife sent them for testing
one came back positive for Lyme and the other came back positive for some other tic borne disease .
Short run of Doxy… they were only on me half a day

Another piece of equipment I need. Thanks.
I have one on every stand now.
Too many people failing and I’m old enough that even if it doesn’t kill me it wouldn’t be good

Most important is a lifeline , hook and stay hooked before your feet leave the ground
Glad u are ok
