  1. I use a multitude of cameras on my property. I do own better quality cameras and locate them where I think the hot spots are. But it also refine by cameras I set during winter when I'm cross country skiing my land following tracks, locating intersections, finding beds and looking at rubs. The snow makes this all easier. I locate camera on what I believe to be rub lines. While I generally agree that cheap equals crap so maybe I did use the wrong terminology. But there's value in inexpensive and adequate. Plus, spendng a lot of money doesn't always equate to quality. I've work on a lot of cars. Built and restored quite a few. English cars have fallen in this category. I've known quite a few of them and look and drive beautiful those two days a week they run. Ha, Those Jags with the six carburetors. What were they thinking. Funny thing though, now the Chinese own them they are more reliable.
  2. Well How many years did it take them to figure that one out? And now Dicks and Sportsmen's Warehouse has a entire aisle back. Maybe they will fill it with crap I see being sold at gun shows.
  3. Loading clips while talking works. I also show target groups at 200 yards from saved targets. Works great
  4. Squirrelwhisperer Don't you know you can't use those evil black guns for hunting??? And It somewhat counts but only because the AR-15 was originally purchased by Air Force before AR-16 came into being. Curtis Lemay ordered them
  5. Chef, Pygmy I stand corrected. I see S&K now has a different design that more a milled block that goes into sight base. This is a design I've used before for other guns and it did work. The St Marie is of this sort except Garand puts scope to side. The previous S&K design I was thinking of was a formed sheet metal thing that cantilevered from side to top . Go online and you'll see both examples along with the B Square mount. I'll admit, I'd give the current S&K design a try over the other designs. Problem with Garand is top ejection and clip loading. Scope has to be offset to side. I bet there's a scout mount that could go on Garand that used sight base. Never liked a scout mount over scope though
  6. Pygmy I hope it isn't the S&K mount. Pretty much crap and good luck holding a zero. In fact, most clamp on scope mounts aren't worth the space they take up. They just aren't rigid enough. But there are a few exceptions. The St Marie mount designed for the Swiss K31 works very well and is as solid as they come. The Darrell scout mount for Mosin Nagants also works well if you care for a scout mount. (Using pistol scope with extended eye relief) But this does hit on the common problem of hunting with a MilSup rifle. The open sights were design for battlefield and not deer or whatever. I do have a few military rifles that have a peep sight. My 1917 is one and it's extremely accurate but heavy as sin and I hate taking historic weapon out in snow and rain. (Yeah, I know battles are fought in snow and rain but this is my only one) I've also put a ghost ring on a Finn M-39. I would consider hunting with that except the safety on a Mosin didn't have anything in mind with being quick and easy. My safeties are always on until I'm ready to take a shot. Anyone that's own a Nagant knows what I'm talking about. Its the safety from hell. It like owning a Garand and knowing about Garand thumb. If you don't know what that means you soon will. Enfield, what beauties. These are the fastest operation bolt guns ever made. In the hand of an experience operator they do have good fire power. I own a few of these with my Long branch being my favorite. I love the smell of Cordite in the morning.
  7. Beautiful day Granger mountain. 56 degrees and only about ten minutes of rain.
  8. Biz World Are you using lithium or just alkaline batteries?
  9. Anyone use military rifles for whitetail hunting? If so what's your ammo and if you hand load, what's your round consist of. Anyone scoping there's> I'm a purest so I don't alter my guns from anything that can't be put back the way it was. I have been using a Swiss K31 with a scope with fire formed brass, with a 308 hornady SST Very accurate
  10. Any recommendation for a decent and around $50 trial cams? I like using these for stills only. I keep them set up on my property most to track deer paths and trends but I've seen a lot more wildlife than that. I've also caught trappers on my property that have no permission. Not to keen with that since my dogs roam the land. Land is posted but that's another topic. I've spent good money on a Moultrie that took great pictures then failed in a year. I have a Primos I like but it exceeds $50 limit and the don't make that model anymore. I'm currently testing an Apeman and Victure off of Amazon that had great reviews but after getting both I find they give a discount for people that give good reviews so I don't trust it now. Both unit have good features but body seem thin plastic and no gasket on door. I doubt they will last. I'd like something that notes time, date and temperature.
  11. Funny thing was 50 years ago my Boy Scout troop was sponsored by Crossman. We had unlimited pellet, co2 and the best air rifles they made. Their facility at the time was in Fairport and a total hell hole. Fellow Rochestrians know what I'm talking about. They have since moved to Bloomfield but the old site was on Superfund. I think it's now off register though. It can't hurt to send them an email and I will. Why, I can show up on their doorstep. With my freaking boots. I just waiting for this to slip off my toe while cocking and score two balls into the corner pocket.
  12. Granted I do know I have wide feet but I always have a miserable time sticking my foot in the loop to cock my bow with a string. It's not like I wear tennis shoes hunting. I wear big boots that keep my feet warm. I've experienced this problem with three different crossbow. One no name, one Barrett and last the Centerpoint. I've resorted to tying a rope loop to factory loop so I can cock. Anyone else have this issue or is this because mom and dad gave me duck feet? I'd buy a loop extension in a second if I could find one. Centerpoint is made by Crossman which is in my backyard almost. It's not like they can't figure out how we dress in this climate.
  13. Smokeless powder isn't an explosive. Black powder is. An individual isn't allowed to have more that five pound of the stuff. Greater that five pound requires a separated storage vault. Landwaz brings up a good point and I don't know the answer. Is Pyrodex, 777 and Blackhorn regulated the same way as real black powder? Post 911 and other events things changes a lot. Pretty easy to make a bomb with black powder. Fairly impossible with smokeless but I'd hate to be proved wrong. But those of you that have been to PA to buy fireworks. How does that one skip the regulations unless there's a exemption. Keep in mind the Boston marathon bombers use fireworks to extract their black powder Firemen are going by NFPA and they would be up on storage requirements. I know at least one of you out there is a retired fireman. DOT only comes into play when it's being transported.
  14. TF They have to use a storage vault to sell it so that rules out a lot of retailers. I recall the days when it was on the shelf.
  15. Anyone know a source around Rochester to purchase black powder or is online order the way to go and pay shipping fees? Had been using Beikirchs but they are no more and supply is low. Been using pellets
  16. Pygmy I only own one Japanese firearm from WWII it seems a decent weapon but ammo is hard to come by and it isn't my concentrations. I only own one Italian WWII firearm. In fact it's the same one that Lee Harvey Oswald was supposedly use on JFK. What a piece of junk. This is the only firearm I've never shot. I think it has an equal chance of going off forward as in does backwards. By design I don't think it's safe. The ammo is equally questionable. They look like pop bottles. Why a country that has made some of the finest firearms in the world choose to outfit their army with these pieces of crap is beyond me. Maybe they didn't want to win. I do think Lee Harvey was a patsy. He was a trained marine sniper. He had easy access to a Springfield 1903. Why a Carcano??? What a total turd Only one Garand? Get two, then they have babies and babies. That's the story I told my wife and I'm sticking to it. You also convinced me on our other post to hunt with my Swiss K31. I broke out my log of hand loads the other night to see what recipe I had previously devised with hunting bullets that worked well. I got all winter to make rounds but to be honest I only need a couple. I'm not a wall of lead kind of guy. The most I've ever shot at a deer is twice. K31 are a carbine and not to hard to handle in woods. You're carrying a Garand in the woods, you brute, heavy. My first look at K31 and I thought it to be butt ugly. Then I shot one. My Swiss Misses are beautiful and that straight pull bolt is quite rapid fire if you need it to be. I can talk for hours on Russian, US, German, Swiss and Finish firearms of WWII. Why Finn. Check out the Winter War. You can't do WWII without that consideration. The Finns taught the Russian how to snipe by using Russians for target practice. The Springfield is largely a copy of the Mauser. But the Garand outclassed the K98. Still the K98 is a fine firearm
  17. Rattler, I'm 61 but with a bad back earned from a lifetime of doing dumb things. I've always loved thing old and my collections reflect that. Maybe chronologically I'm not that old but these days I sure feel it. I plan to retire in 14 months and move to my land permanent. Wife will work a few more years mainly to provide us health insurance. My decreased brother work seven day a week and accumulated a lot of wealth. However, when he finally did retire and bought his slice of heaven he didn't last long before the cancer got him. I wish not to do a repeat as I was doing the same path and I always felt he got screwed. Soon after my best friend died from a very minor operation where they did an out patient thing to cut off a growth. Dead three days later due to a blood clot to brain. These events drove me to work toward what I dream of. A cabin on a mountain. NY is a tough State to retire in but I truly do LOVE NY. Well, maybe not the governor Attached is my pond in front of cabin. I've been stocking my ponds with fish. It's kind of like a mega aquarium.
  18. I guess I did a breech of etiquette by not coming here first. I've done a few postings and have greatly enjoyed the content of this website. It appears to be well managed and free of trolls and has people with sincere and common interests. I'm here to learn and share ideas. I know a little about a few things, a lot about far fewer things and there just so much more I don't know anything about. As a rabid baby boomer I grew up in an interesting age and I'm grateful to see the advances in my lifetime. Man on Moon, Electronic age and modern medicine I greatly enjoyed being a Boy Scout but fell short of being Eagle when I discovered girls. The woods has always been my church. My dad helped with this but was never a hunter. He grew up during the depression and my gramps was a hunter. To make ends meet they ate a lot of rabbit and squirrel. Plus, he was a WWII vet. Battle of the Bulge and the whole bit. Dad never talked about the war until the later days of his life. When he did it made sense why he didn't want to talk about it. He saw awful things and cheated death a few times. He wanted nothing more to do with guns so my involvement with hunting and firearms started in college from experienced friends. I've always been a student of WWII. As a younger man I backpacked, camped, winter camped, climbed, ice climbed, downhill skied and X country skied. Some of these I can still pull off but to a lesser degree. My mortality is catching up with me. I do well in Nordic environments but abhor heat and humidity so you won't be finding me in Florida in the summer. Married one and only wife and she's an old fart too. We are the polar opposites that work. She breaks stuff and I fix stuff. Two adult children. One gone and one that may never leave but there's always hope. I have an advanced formal education but that certainly doesn't mean I'm smarter or dumber than any of you. Dad never tolerated any of is five boys being average but the fact of the matter was, I was average so I had to work twice as hard in my studies. He only wanted the best for me. I've never stopped learning and still attend classes at times. Professionally I'm a senior facilities manager of a couple industrial complexes for a major corporation. I've been responsible for building and maintaining buildings, equipment and processes. I also get to do environment, health and safety which actual plays well for me. I care about people and the environment. I do nothing to harm either as a core belief no matter the cost. I'm an expert at precision temperature control. I've built environments that control to thousands of a degree. I'm proud of all of this. My major hobby is collecting and restoring firearms from WWII European theater but I also appreciate other firearms. I don't own anything that I don't shoot, can't take apart and then put back together again. Obviously I hunt and I hunt alone by choice. Hunting for me isn't predicated on getting a deer. Fact of the matter is I let most of them walk. Being alone in the woods with my thoughts and being entertained by sightings of fox, turkey, grouse, fischer cats and a variety of other wildlife can make my day as much as getting a deer. I own 30 acres on a mountain top near Swain and we have since purchased our retirement log home there as both my wife and I love our piece of heaven. I've lived 56 years of my life in Rochester, NY and have a house by the U of R where the wife works. I have a passion for wine and enjoy cooking when I have the time. Oh the smell when I make bread. I'm a certified trainer in first-aid, AED and CPR. Mom was a surgical nurse. We got stitched and shots at home and got training by her. I keep a EMT bag and AED at my property as closest medical care is 40 minutes away. I have plenty of faults. Ask my wife So, this is me No more No less
  19. Oh my, I may never leave Is there one for restoring old sports cars?
  20. Well get this one. The Town of Pittsford considers a bow and X-bow as a firearm. Now that defies logic. Town next to it, Penfield does not. Feet makes the difference between legal and illegal Local municipality can make more stringent rules than State or Federal requirements but not less stringent. I would check with town for definition and get it in writing so when you get visit from law enforcement you got the goods. Don't expect police to know nuances of the law Only thing bucking this trend is pot. Go figure
  21. Ha, what a great hunting forum. I'm a recent joiner but you're hitting my hobbies. Now where's the cigar forum? I grew up in house that had a wine cellar. There was five boys in my family and we were all into sports. We could miss dinner Mon-Sat. However Sunday dinner was mandatory a$$ in seat. But as an enticement wine was serve with dinner. Very good wine. We all got schooled and quizzed from an early age. I guess dad thought it would give us culture. All my brothers moved away but right up until his death, I had every Sunday dinner with dad....with wine. Dad was 93 when he passed. In his will my brothers and I were to get together and drink down his collection. We did and split the rest. I got the bottle of Lafite Rothschild. I will never drink it. That will go to my children on my death Dad was mostly into Bordeaux Grand Cru and German Kabinett wines but we did sneak in some Italian. When my oldest brother retired he moved to Bordeaux he bought an old winery and turn it into his house. Sadly the big C took him but his wife still lives there. The cellar there has several hundred bottles he collected. Every time he visited he would bring me something nice you couldn't get in the States. I now have quite a collection myself but I only drink these wines for special occasions or with my brothers One of my regrets is I never visited him there when he was alive. I retire in 14 months. Then I will travel to France to see SIL. My brother told me I have open access to his cellar. I'll arrived with corkscrew in hand and will be drinking several toast to him. And will likely cry a bit too. Wine for me has unique overtures of family
  22. Thank you for so many of you responding to this thread. Obviously there's a variety of opinions on this subject and a lot of that is situational which I quite understand. I sit and stand in my stand. They are always tucked into a tree with good cover but not enough to hinder a shot. Being in 9P means I get to see a lot of doe walk right under stand such that I could spit on them and without permit it's a nada. And even then I just don't shoot any doe when I do have a permit. No babies and no mamas with babies. But large single doe taste just fine. I guess the main reason for want to go lower is I started crossbow two years ago and very much enjoy it. I've mess my back up so bad that holding back a bow for any length of time is very painful. I had to give up bow few years back. Crossbow isn't an issue. Really sucks to get old but as long as I can crawl, I will hunt. My main concern is shot angle. I get the further they are away the less it matters. Even though I feel very accurate with X-bow out to 50 yards there isn't many places I can take that shot and if I could, I wouldn't. I've set a distance limit of 35 yards. This year I had a deer come in too close to shoot at first due to shot angle. I waited until he moved out further and even then I had to use my tenth grade geometry and biology and play the angle to get a decent lung shot. Glad I payed attention in those classes now but I never thought I would use it. If my stand was lower the angle would improve. Too low and you get busted. There's a trade off. As far as wood stands, if I know the age and how it was built I'm OK with that. But come on, how many wooden stands have you seen poorly built, that are ancient and are anchored into a growing tree. I'm not getting in that. Metal or wood I'm not trusting either much passed five years unless I carefully inspect and overhaul them with new bolts. I don't trust Chinese quality control. I was a rock climber at one point in my life. Not afraid of heights and I know how to anchor but I respect the situation. You fall rock climbing it always ends the same way. You smash into a wall of rock. It really hurts.
  23. Oops Slow on posting. Goldens look like that too as pups.
  24. Golden Retriever I take it. I've owned four in my life and presently have one. Best dog ever for kids. And oh, what a nose. Present one makes a hobby of going into woods and within minutes brings out a deer part. She also tracks and finds field mice better than any cat I ever met. Her sister is a very gentle Pitbull that she raised and adores. Pitbull got in a tussle with a porcupine last year and came out of woods with a few quills in her. She showed it to her sister whining. Golden would have none of that and raced into woods. Well there's one less porcupine but Tilly had about seventy quills in her everywhere. Don't mess with my sister
  25. Pygmy Don't you think the mass of a sabot or slug would deflect less than a rifle bullet? Don't get me wrong here, I don't try to shoot through trees and branches but hunting my hardwoods you have to accept you aren't going to see everything in a scope. There's no fields here. I'm deep woods. Might be an interesting physics lab project. I went to college in 70's I bet I could have talked my professor into this one. Mass x Acceleration = Force is basic equation. While the shotgun slug moves slower it has greater mass and more propellent to move it. I had my bow with me in my dorm room as getting to places to hunt and practice were fairly near by. Good luck with that today. That would be a lock down.
