  1. sometimes I do ground blind but most times I end up still hunting in the morning and use a saddle in the afternoon. Especially if its a new or newer area for me. (Saddle, DRT w/ foot loop climbing method) Lowest weight & safest (for me) to get up off the ground. see "NY Saddle Hunter" on youtube if you are not familiar with DRT w/ foot loop. I started in 2019. I've recently chatted with a couple people on here that live close. But are the first I've seen that is in a similar situation. Obviously almost everyone here has a lot more experience then I have but if any ways I can help, let me know.(or if you want to split a rental haha)
  2. Hey Chacha, Sounds like you are in a similar situation as me (I'm in Queens and don't own a car right now). I've done the rented car thing too. I was at Otis Pike Preserve for a couple sits this weekend and got to see a few deer but didn't get a chance at a legit shot yet. I also use apps to scout as best as possible too. If you have an app like On-X (there are others) mark any signs you see.... prints, poop, rubs etc etc. Doing that has helped me make better guesses at where to setup (considering the wind) to the point where I'm seeing deer on public usually every time. Now I'm trying to hone that into getting them in range. Not owning a car is a big disadvantage (especially in Suffolk ) but it too can been overcome. good luck this season. -Chris W
  3. I wonder what made him want to go to Brooklyn. Hipster Deer? Did they catch him at a craft brewery?
  4. I got to spend a fun day yesterday out on public out on LI. What was last year a funnel between two marshy ponds in now just a patch of trees between two muddy grass fields. Still lots of tracks and poop so I ended up finding what I hoped was a good lower tree spot in my saddle. Even set up the cameras just in case. Outside of plenty of bird watching I ended up seeing 3 does and a fawn (on the opposite side of one of the fields) and for about 30 mins at the end of the day watched this Buck (screen capture from the vid I shot) feed in the second field before he was spooked by a low flying plane. Was a great day to be off work and out in some nature! good luck w/ your hunts today everyone -Chris W
  5. prayers to him and his family for a speedy recovery. hearing stuff like this is the part that scared me away from stands. I'm happy I found saddles and use a climbing method that keeps me connected at all times
  6. I would definitely want to do that! PM sent Thank you for the message -Chris W
  7. Hi Everyone, I decided this season I'm looking to find a few people to bow hunt with. I have my own gear, tags, permits etc. I'm just looking to meet up with people along either the LIRR areas or Metro North lines (as I don't own a car while living here in NYC- my biggest set back w/ learning) to hunt with or at least nearish. I have a saddle setup but i'm open to learn other techniques. Whether you're younger or older or a complete psychopath that eats pizza with a fork & knife, I don't care I just want to learn more. I'm a mid 40's US Navy vet. If you have interest in meeting up and helping a guy out (especially on weekends) let me know. I'm happy to plan something out and meet you where it's convent to you. Thank you and Happy Opening Day! Good luck everyone -ChrisW
  8. So with less than 24hrs till the sun comes up on a lot of NY's 2020/21bow season. What are you doing in this time? last min check lists? biting your fingernails in anxiousness? running through your weather reports? getting a new spot on your wall read for a new display? What are you doing with this time?
  9. Thank you Rachunter ... Understood. I live in Queens NY by the East river and have been working 7days a week this year. So I'm having to rely a lot on satellite map and app "scouting". I'll only get to go out on days I take vacation. I saved all my vaca for deer season. This coming Wed - Sunday I took off and I'm looking fwd to it! Good luck to you too!

    Havens Point

Hi Guys, Year two of learning to hunt and looking at some possible new spots (and all the rules regs etc with each). One that I was eyeing to check out this season is Havens Point but what I'm reading on DEC page and what I'm seeing on On-X app doesn't necessarily align and I was hoping someone here may have some experience with this location and be willing to give some advice. On the DEC page (https://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6072.html) It says the following: Havens Point--Waterfowl, deer (archery) and small game hunting are permitted in this area. Access to the property is via Pine Edge Drive. The dirt road running through the center of the property crosses private property and is closed to unauthorized traffic. No vehicles are permitted beyond the paved portion of roads. The vacant land and farm immediately north of the State lands are private property, and it is the hunter's responsibility to obtain permission from the owners before crossing or hunting on these lands. Care should be taken to avoid the fall of spent shot on homes on adjacent properties. On the On-X app (screen capture below) it seems like there is a dog leg access without being on private property. (the end Pine Edge Drive I have marked with the Access Marker) I do have valid Managed Land Access and Parking permits. Does anyone have experience with accessing this area? Any parking issues or just square up at the end of the paved area? Is the app correct or do you have to cross private as the DEC post makes it seem? Whats the rabbit or deer hunting here like? thank you for any and all insight, advise or help. -ChrisW
  11. I keep seeing the following phrase in the planing and submittal paperwork for 2020 which is why I was inquiring. " a combination of deer removal operations (on NPS properties), capture and euthanasia of individual deer (where appropriate), and public hunting (within the Fire Island Wilderness only) to achieve the plan objectives (estimated at 20-25 deer per square mile)"
  12. I've seen references to a plan to do a public DMP hunt this year (2020-2021) but it's been difficult to find out if this was going forward or not this year(Covid interruptions) and if so when. Anyone have any details?
  13. Hi @duckfishwave, welcome I'm new here too and a new Deer/Rabbit bow hunter in Queens. Good luck with your bird hunts this year
  14. took my first days off from work for the year... can't wait to get into the woods.
  15. I guess I'm rooting for Team 1. Looking forward to seeing how this shakes out.
  16. Hello Elmo, Do you normally go North or East for your hunts?
  17. Hi All, I have a butcher local to me in Queens that will process but I was wondering if any of you know of anyone that either does Mobile Processing or does carcass pickup for processing. There will be times this year I can go hunt but will not have the ability to transport the carcass back to my local butcher. Any leads will be appreciated. Thank you -CW
  18. Really nice of you to offer. I haven't had the opportunity to go visit that area in my life yet. Would love to check it out sometime. First year in the Saddle? good luck! what are you using for your climbing method? I've been doing a modified version of DRT to keep my pack weight down but I'm considering also getting a stick w/an adder to give me another option. Yea, it's fun.. thankfully I still really enjoy spending any time in the woods and spotting any animals... learning along the way.
  19. Hello Crappyice, Thanks for the welcome. Last year I spent my sits in Otis Pike Preserve. I don't have other connections or hunting friends yet so my only option for now is public land. So far, that's game plan again this year too, back to Otis Pike since I've learned a bit about that area and might explore a couple spots over in Rocky Point I've been looking at (Satellite photos and topography maps)
  20. I've had my Bowtech Carbon Icon for a little under two years. It's my first bow. I shot about 15 different bows before selecting it and have since shot probably another 20. I still feel like for me and my situation I bought the right bow for me and got the most bang for my buck. I like the % of let off and its got a pretty solid back wall especially after I added a second cam stopper (after timing and tuning). For me I feel likes its has an even mix of forgiveness but still smallish cam to cam length tat allows me maneuverability. I would say it's definitely worth having in your testing lineup and give it a try. Good luck!
  21. Hi everyone, Mid 40's Vet here that did not grow up hunting. No Family in NY and no Friends that hunt. I'm living in Queens NYC (great place to try and learn, haha). So I know I'm on a significant upward climb to learn but so far it's been really fun. I'm in my 2nd year teaching myself and learning as much as I can online (very glad to have that resource). Been shooting my bow daily for about 18 month. Last year I got to go out on a few solo sits and really enjoyed being up in the saddle all day. I even got some great wildlife photos. Even spotted about 20-30 deer but never got in a situation where I felt like I had a solid ethical shot to take. It was all very good practice though and I learned a lot. Looking forward to opening day and will be trying to learn as much as I can again this year. Also hoping this site will be a good resource to learn more from to. Thanks and good luck to you all this season -CW
