I yet to see a deer thats been killed, resurected from the dead and released to grow and shoot again. Fishing and hunting are way different. Hunting you shoot to kill, fishing you can be selective and release. However many believe that the smaller fish and smaller deer taste much better and choose to eat the young age class. I wont critisize others choices on what they choose to harvest be it a fish or a deer. The mature bucks are out there, if one so chooses to put the time and effort in to take a mature animal.

If I remember correct NY is 63% Forest, I dont recal the % that is city or urban, compare that to most western and midwestern states that are 25% Forest and Vastly Farm land. Imagine all the deer that have never seen a human and died of old age in a mass track of forest like the adirondacks or catskills.

It takes more than just hunters holding out on shooting small deer to get massive head gear. NY is a vast state with huge tracks of timber, with the dominant farming in the west, hence the higher numbers of impressive antlers in western NY. With that said without the farm crops like in the midwest and western US being dominate food sources, and possible a smaller percent of hunters per sq. mile in some of those states. NY will never be the antler capitol so many desire. With that said for NY the amount of big deer being taken all over the state is indeed quite impressive. There is quality mature bucks in NY period, in the quantity some desire, nope. Never will be without mass nutrition, mild winters and less hunters. Compared to years gone by, NY is turning out some huge deer and in decent numbers for what this state can be.

I encourage you to go to the facebook page I posted and look at the counties and towns these deer where killed. The deer are very impressive and the amount is shocking.

Go to New York Antler Outdoors facebook page. Be prepared to get your socks knocked off when you see the hundreds of giants from this year alone. New York has some real nice bucks and in good quantity as well. I do believe this theory is a good part of why there are so many nice mature bucks in New York. At camp, surrounded by state land and a couple other out of staters camps, I see im- mature bucks harvested constantly. The trail cameras and deer we have seen are very impressive. Mature bucks are harder targets, most hunters wont, cant or do not know how to be patient or hunt them. And that is perfectly acceptable to me. It use to upset us to see all these small bucks being shot that we passed up on many times during bow, however it didnt take long to realize it took the pressure of the big ones and it also left them for us. Over the 20 years being there the big buck numbers have grown and we still continue to see hunters around us killing the little guys.

What he said, this is how we do it and the deer processor around here, hide always stays on. Was always taught the hide keeps the meat from drying out and better yet it also keeps the meat from warming up during the day as it will hold the cold in from overnight temps. Chest cavity always gets packed with ice as well. Think of an air conditioned house, poorly insulated one the cool goes out, good insulated one the cool stays in, same as those cool fall nights you dont heat the house, cool inside just about all day and warm outside.

A close one that happened to a guy we invited down, he was standing on watch opening day against a tree, pretty big and tall guy and a bullet struck a tree a few inches above his head, needless to say he never came back again. The number of idiots have calmed down since doe permits are not so easily available and in quantity however it just takes one idiot to ruin any ones life. Be safe out there Saturday

It just plain depends on a couple things in my opinion. Two big ones are pressure and a deers experience with pressure. Its not all abnormal for the local farmers around camp to push the heck out of surrounding state land starting around noon opening day till thanksgiving. I am not a fan of deer drives for many reasons myself. So with this being somewhat of an annual thing for them we hunt our borders from noon on, mostly to keep them drivers from crossing into our property. So over the years I have witnessed some first hand things. I have seen mature bucks and doe actually hunker down hard in a blow down, some thick briars or whatever will conceal themself the best and watched them watch the drivers go right past them. The opposite the immature deer seem to just have the instinct to run and run as fast as they can to get away. But in either case the deer seem to get real timid and spooked from opening day and most rest of the season. Now on the years where doe permits were limited, weather was bad and the fair weather hunters and farmers all stayed home its much easier hunting. The newest thing over the last few years is every Tom Dick and Harry from the cities come up friday night and do there opening day scouting , bring there gun and sight them in right about where they plan to hunt the next morning. Its like a nice big warning for the deer that they better hide and hide good for the next 48 hours. Now at home in NTier the conversion from bow to gun is minimal at best on deer. I just dont see timid and spooked deer like at camp in S Tier. I always look forward to gun season in N Tier and absolutely hate seeing bow season end in S Tier just for these reasons. Its also expected every gun opener at camp to hear or see an ambulance and count at the very least 100 gun shots before noon and a vast majority of them before sunrise.

Thing is I dont see these kids watching TV ever. It used to be video games, now its social media, snapchat, twitter, facebook, facetime blah blah blah. Its the bullcrap of over sensitivity that started this pansy mind set. I live in a small town in a small redneck school district and its no different than a kid in the city, all through there sports growing up, they dont keep score cause there is no losing teams, everyone gets a trophy, parents smothering kids with everything they desire to own, laws and regulations that protect them from even riding a damn bicycle in your driveways without a helmet, laws where you can not even discipline your kids when they get in trouble, parents that are so naive that wont accept there child isnt perfect, the list goes on and on. These protestors and many more have been damn right spoiled and never told no or not gotten there way, never taught right from wrong with consequences. And we stand here wondering how these people can act like this, they were not born this way they were taught to be this way, from day 1.

I got one left in high school and I can tell you the last one and the current one in school, well its not easy, not easy at all. They see all the crap the other kids have handed too them and just demand to have the same. Mom caves sometimes and I end up on the couch when that happens. I was raised you want it you work for it. The kids can not even grasp that concept. Want want want its not easy raising kids in the entitlement era.

Your comment on self reliance is the largest part of whats missing in the Liberal Democratic world. They want us to be full government reliant. Im pretty positive this country was founded and built on nothing but the importance of being self reliant and creating a life of honesty, integrity, decency, self pride and self worth. It is the very reason we became The United States of America. I have been dumbfounded by the American desire of being entitled to everything for the cost of nothing. I see it everywhere, even in my own home where our kids generation have zero desire to be successful through the path hard work. I think this very generation we see with there hands out while wearing designer work boots that have not one spec of dirt on them are the smartest generation yet. The only thing is they are not using those smarts and being taught in our education systems and homes to be smart but dependent on government. The common sense and desire to self succeed are gone, With the results from last nights election this is a great step in getting America back on track its also most important for the parents and educators to shine and teach this generation what true success and how to reach it is all about. Trump can pave the path but we must also teach how to walk this path or history will repeat itself and turn this country back into a Liberal entitlement state of mind. We have spoiled American youth and now we have seen the results of that as they have become adults full of jealousy, rage and the desire to be entitled with free meaningless materialistic items to brag upon there friends and fellow Americans with, to the point they want more and more for nothing. Last night hard working proud Americans stood up and said enough, you want it, earn it. There is not much greater happiness than working hard at achieving something, finally achieving it and the pride that comes from saying "I did it", and I hope they taste that victory of success and want more self reliant happiness.
