  1. Where does the .5 come in to play in April? I would say he is going into year 2.
  2. That was my point in a different version lol. A fisherman is a fisherman in my book, well unless it is a women then they would be a fisherwoman lol.
  3. Sure leaves a lot up to the imagination doesnt it? here is DEC's dscription. The link to the source as well.http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/33067.html Artificial lures or bait means artificial imitations of natural bait, man-made flies, spinners, spoons, plugs, jigs and other lures including those that may contain some natural substances such as deer hair and feathers. Artificial fly means a hook with no more than two points dressed with feathers, hair, thread, tinsel or any similar material to which no additional hooks, spinners, spoons or similar devices have been added. I have never understood the concept myself, you cant use a nightcrawler for example but you can use some type of synthetic worm covered in scent that looks, feels and does everything to attract fish except wiggle. What is the purpose? If its to deter bait fisherman from certain areas for flyfisherman than just post it for fly fishing only but in the same respect why is there not a bait fishing area only in return? Got to love NY state thinking.
  4. There is a lot of county land that is public land in reality that is not marked. It was a lot of years before someone discovered this in my hometown on a few large parcels of land that a certain group of family members dominated and threw everyone out. Someone actually looked in to it and low and behold it was Theodore Rosevelt that turned a lot of land over to the county and got lost in the shuffle over the years.
  5. The taste of real maple syrup varies from area to area. You could taste mine and then drive 20 miles down the road and get a slightly different taste. Not drastic but enough as one could pick up on the taste difference. A lot depends on the type of soil, if one is tapping sugar maples or soft maples or a mix of both. Equipment and time it takes to boil the sap off till syrup is reached effects flavor as well as cleanliness of equipment used. Clean tanks and gathering equipment is a syrup makers best friend. Bacteria can grow rather rapidly especially in warmer temps, the more one cleans the better. The bacteria however is not harmful as it is boiled to temps around 220 degrees but it will give off flavors in the end product. Syrup filtering process can also have a bit to do with flavor. There is alot of sugar sand that the syrup releases when its brought to boiling temps. A good filtering process takes all this out of the syrup as well.
  6. Why thank you Culver its sure is an exhausting time of the year but makes it all worth while when you get good feedback and can put some smiles on peoples faces.
  7. Yep its a ton of work and relies on the weather. The spring climate has changed really drastically over the years. Use to tap first week of march for almost 3 generations. Now its just not so. Tap firts week in January to get the January thaw runs, sit and wait, get a few runs in between, sometimes feburary is decent and then when March comes you hope you already made atleast half a crop due to the March being so unpredictable now. Last year we were in mid 70 second week of march and the season was over, this year froze up 2 weeks in march couple small runs here and there another deep freeze and now that we are out of that we have 2 days left before there are no more freezes in sight. Use to make syrup well into mid to 3rd week in April. Not anymore we are lucky to get this far into April. You want to make a living at it taps need to go in at first warmup in January and then cross your fingers.
  8. You hear all the time 40 to 1 but that is definately varies greatly through out the season.Usually early on or after a deep freeze you will get a lower ratio. The longer the season plays out the higher the ratio gets as well. If you take the number 86 and divide by the sugar content of your sap you will get your ratio. Gthphtm is much closer to reality at 50 to 1. It varies so much from one area to another, whether your tapping true sugar maples or soft maples as we call them in NY. I am a 50/50 mix of sugars and soft maples and averaging 53 to 1 this year. Last year was 62 to 1. The bigger the crown the sweeter the sap and summer sun sure helps out a lot as well in the sugar category.
  9. Only if you dont care about the poisoning your friends and family. This is the biggest and worse thing any one trying to produce maple syrup can do. If its not food grade dont use it, between the recylced materials garbage cans are made out of and the toxins and BPA's they will leach into your sap I can not stress enough NO GARBAGE CANS, they were made for garbage not food products. Now did someone say check valves? I run strictly check valve taps made by leader invented by Dr. Tim Perkins. One of the best if not the best tap made for tubing systems. They will allow you to tap in January and still run in April if weather permits. 5500 gallons of sap boiled down and hoping for 2000 more this week. One last big hurrah before its over.
  10. There are multiple dealers for equipment through out the state. CNY is a pretty vast area if I knew where abouts you are I could point you to the nearest one. Season will be over by weeks end though. You also can order them from Bascom's Maple Supply out of NH. Order today and ground shipping they will be at your door tomarrow. Hoping to hit the 200 gallon mark by weeks end. Been an okay season, better than last but still below par due to the hard 2 week freeze and an early end again. Usually make syrup into mid april so we are losing about 3 weeks production all together. If I didnt tap in January for the early runs I would of been in real trouble. You can also check on Sugarbush.info for lots of great info and links to all the dealers in the maple belt.
  11. Your picking a decent time to go, if you waited a week you probably would be flooded out from snowmelt. Redfield got hit pretty hard with 48 inches in 2 days last week on top of what they already had. Snow started melting fast today, the fish should be adapted to the temp change from the runoff by the time you arrive. Have a blast.
  12. The fishing has been like the past few years, exceptional! Be prepared especially the upper section there is a lot and I mean a lot of snow here. The river is mixed right now with a few fresh steel, some that have been hanging in the river for a bit now and getting lots of drop backs now as well. Dead drifting black stones is doing the best for me right now. The dropbacks and ones in the river for a bit are real line shy at this point so go light and go flourocarbon. Tell your driftboat guide no chumming with eggs when he gets to the hole I will be fishing. :fie: Seems the norm now with a lot of the drift boat guides now and it sure kills the fishing after about an hour. Good luck have fun and be safe, the snow and ice are not easy on the walking.
  13. The very first landlord I had a looong time ago hit a doe with his car. He stops over and asked me to help him get it in the trunk of his car. So I did, while driving back to his house we kept hearing this loud thumping noise and knew right away what it was. We pull in his driveway the landlord opens the trunk and the darn thing jumps out and runs away all dazed and confused. Wasnt to funny at the time but we laughed over it quite a few times later.
  14. Also the porcupines have been screaming there heads off at night looking for some loving and its early for that too I think. But sure isnt anything like spring outside yet.
  15. I have been seeing road kill skunks for a few weeks now. No idea why either cause its been cold and theres still 2 feet of snowpack in my woods with 10 inches fresh snow last night. One startled me while gathering sap just a few days ago too. I think everything is all screwedup including this weather lol.
  16. If it only had pure NY state maple syrup on it, then you would have a breakfast!
  17. LIberals will be liberals and judge anyone who they deem less of a man in light of hiding there own flaws. Is this really a surprise who started this thread? Oh and one last thing to add! Know if dat aint sum funny shot right thare I dunt no wat is!
  18. I think that is very commendable of you to do that. Thanks for the link as well first I ever heard of this.
  19. couple things come to mind when I see this being advertised. 1 someone taking advantage of the BS Cuomo laws and using it to make a profit doesnt sit well with me. If the proceeds went to a good cause that would be one thing. 2 like already said we might think it but to act upon saying it or socializing this with the public really puts an image out there we certainly do not need put on our heads. Not a good choice of defending something that we love and support so much.
  20. I have even had cable lock cut off one of mine in 6K on my own land and it was gone. I found it in the late spring about 50 feet away in the middle of a marshy pond. I know who did it and confronted him. A 16 year old kid thought he would like to put his stand there so he did. How messed up is that one? Wasnt hard to figure it out I just kept and eye on when he climbed up the same tree in his stand. The old saying you cant fix stupid, well it fits this kid very well. But I have had so many stolen around here Its either a permanent one now or my climber. As soon as I catch one guy another one is in line to take his spot it seems.
  21. I dont know about 6N but I sure wont do it in 6K. I have had way to many stolen on private land in 6K let alone state land.
  22. Doubtful I think the liberal media which thinks Obama is the great masia wont stand for it or broadcast that message. How many times did you hear when bush was in office it was Clintons fault?
  23. HMMM I think if you changed rich to welfare you might be on to something.
  24. Do not leave it on for very long, it will leave it a sticky mess. With kids in hocky and redoing there sticks all the time I can attest it is not easy getting the residue off.
