Doc I trap and I struggle to find any areas here at home that someone else isnt already trapping even my private posted land I kicked 3 different trappers off last year. There are more than you might think.

Wait till after the first frost and you wont be saying the deer are not touching them.

You should be okay adding a 46-0-0 if you add it 30 plus days after the seeds start growing. But if you do take some precautions, Make sure it is a nice dry day with a few days follwoing that so it can settle to the ground and not get wet and burned on the plants, also do it miday or early afternoon once the dew has burned off the plot for the day. As far as the Hay/dead weeds, the seeds need soil contact to have a good chance. If the seeds are suspended in piles of dead weed chances are the plants roots are going to dry out if they establish and be short lived if they make it that far. I always york rake the dead weeds off the plot even though I plow the soil over. I dont like taking the chance of the dead brush turning into live brush again but thats just me. All you can do now is play the wait and see game but Im sure you will get a decent amount of growth out of it. I always plant an annual the first year or 2 in a new foodplot to get a hold on weeds and brush before I go all out with a perenial. Just another thought for you to consider for the next time. What was your ph reading by the way? Next year you should take another soil sample as well. Pelletized lime is more or less a lawn type lime and its long range effect on a foodplot is subpar to a good pulverized ag lime. You are probably going to have to lime it again in a year. But hey dont let my post get you down by any means you have a great start and a nice looking soil to work with and limited rocks unlike most of us so your one up in that department. Foodplots are always a work in progress.

Too funny, you start by saying you havent seen anything this big on your land in awhile and I start looking at those little bucks and Im thinking this guy is nuts, then WHAMM you throw that big boy in the mix. Nice buck I would love to see him on one of my cams for sure.

Very nice video indeed. Now tell me what camera is that I want one?

Well I have access to about 4 million acres of state land in NY. On top of that I have 150 acres of private land here at home and another 75 at camp that is surrounded by 6000 acres of state land. Plus somewhere near 1000 acres I hunt a few times a year with a couple buddies on private farmland that we have permission to hunt. I added up the number of stands the other day on another post here but darn if I can remember right now so Im going to guess a bit and say about 20 stands of my own not counting anyone elses. Some days I truly wish I only had about 100 acres cause it drives me nuts thinking I should be in that "other" stand lol good problem to have I guess.

Anyone else find it quite disturbing that such a large group of people who share the same passion disagree and argue so much? Simply amazing to me it even comes right down to individuals pointing out spelling errors. The tired out debate of no place to hunt or all the land is bought and posted blah blah blah. We all own land in this state and we all have the right to hunt it. Theres a huge chunk called the adirondacks and another huge chunk called the catskills and than there are thousands of acres spread all over the state. Wait is it a right to hunt it or a privaledge lol. You guys truly think the state is going to f)ck with what 600,000 armed men and women who rip off each others heads for petty bs let alone tell us we cant hunt without a statewide hunting revolution. What part of hypothetical was missed on this thread. Now lets move on to more important issues like how many mountain lions the dec let loose in the state and why nobody has a picture or proof of it lol.

Bumper crop last year here. Looking okay so far but hard to see whats in the trees yet with all the leaves. Hopefully the white oaks are loaded. The apples here on my place have completely dropped off the trees already and it was a huge crop but not alot of mass to them. Bummed out cause they will be gone come opening bow.

Seward Bill Favored By Cortland County Sportsmen Signed Into Law
wdswtr replied to Fantail's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I posted this on the other thread that was asking about this a few days ago. In the right hands Im all for it. I will be carrying my rifle for sure at camp. Not that there are many 100 yard plus shots in around in the woods. -
Sorry but I try not to support the chinese when our own country is full of unemployed people. Harbour Freight is all chinese imported crap. I would rather spend a few more bucks for a higher quality product and support america. Just my opinion I guess but like I said I try hard but sometimes you just cant.

I guess I would have to join the people I despise and go poaching with them.

Sugar Beets already getting nipped
wdswtr replied to NYBowhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Didnt know deer ate rocks lol. I cant stress enough that plots need to be fenced off from deer until they mature. Doesnt need to be elaborate and can be done on the cheap. Even some bailing twine tied to trees to make a perimeter fence and thensprayed with Deer Off will help that foodplot mature before its destroyed. -
Dont worry fasteddie I just did the same thing lol. MY cameras that didnt last where wildVIEW also and not wildGAME cameras. Sorry for the confusion never had a wildgame camera but I do have a couple Moultries right now that do not impress me at all. Night picture quality suck and about every 20 pictues I will get 1 that says "picture format not reconized" across a black screen instead of a picture. Battery life is half what they claim as well. Im going camera shopping this week.

I should also say that if you are only going to plant an annual seed yearly then skipping the herbacide would be okay as your are only going to turn the soil over again come spring. In this process of anually plowing the ground and replanting the weeds should be pretty much under control with a food plot seed dominating the field for a short time. But with planting an anuual those things are going to show themselves in short order and you will end up with a plot that has been overtaken by weeds within a couple years time.
-
Heres my story and Im sticking to it. From experience I can say that plowing alone is only going to deter the weeds and in short order they will take over again. I went through this with all my food plots the first go around. Now after saying that even after you herbacide an area you will get weed growth within a year. There are dormant roots and seeds still alive under that dirt. Also if you brush hogged already you would have to wait for the leaves to regrow before you can spray to have any effect worth the effort. I will tell you my process and have had great success doing it this way with new never planted plots. Get a soil sample to the co-op, I herbacide the area, wait till plants die, then I brush hog and york rake the debree of the plot, I then turn the soil over with a 2 bottom plow, drag it smooth and by now the soil test results should be back, I then apply pulvarized ag lime wich is usually 2 to 3 tons per acre skip the soil test and your wasting your time, then I lightly drag the lime into the soil, after 45 to 60 days for the lime to take effect I fertilize according to the soil test. Cross my finger for some rain and then a few weeks later around the 1st to 2nd weekend of August I will plant an annual seed, In the spring I will send out another soil sample to the co-op so I can fine tune the lime and fertilizer, come late spring early summer those dormant weeds and seeds will show that are still in the plot and I will herbicide and after those die I will turn the soil again and wait for the soil test results to come back. ONce they are back I will fine tune the soil and come August I will then plant a perenial seed. I just got done with my last plot today doing just this and next August it will be ready for the perenial. Too many times I have seen guys put in a ton of work, skip a soil sample, skip the herbacide and have less than ideal result, did it myself once or twice. It is alot of work and takes alot of time and needs to be planned out accordingly to get the fall planting in on time. Next time Im down to camp I will take some pictures of 3 food plots that are in the same field, 2 where herbacided and done exacally how I explained and one was just plowed, limed fertalized and seeded with a perenial and it is full of weeds after 2 seasons even with mowing it on a regular basis to keep the level of the clover down to 6 to 8 inches. If you already brush hogged and have done the soil test your best bet at this point is to stick an annual in the ground like oats and hope for the best and come spring plan it out to get the best bang for your time and money you are spending. I skipped paying the money for a commercial sprayer and I just put a 12v bilge pump in a 5 gallon pail and ran a hose to a pvc pipe I capped on both ends and drilled small holes in it for the sprayer head. Put a lid on the bucket and strapped it on the 4 wheeler. Hole thing cost me less than 30 bucks. Good luck do it once and do it right is my motto.

Return it for a replacement. I had 2 wildgame cams and I only got a year out of both them before they died. Wont buy one ever again.

Okay so my lone wolf review is over lol. I hunt with all 3 types of stands. I feel they all have a purpose and a place. I want up a tree as high as I can get for bow. I have been busted out of ladders to many time getting caught at the draw. The ladders I use for those spots that dont get hunted much and are put up for that odd wind scenario and will stay there for years. The hang ons are the places I will hunt the most and the bigger the platform the better. Probably 75% of my hunts are in one. The climber I use for a couple different situations, 1 is when Im hunting a first time area when my other stands have dried up or going to a new peice with a buddy. The second scenario is for state land hunting. Its illegal to leave your stands in the woods on state land so Im not carrying in a ladder stick and a stand to hunt once out of it and then have to take the darn thing back down again. So the climber is key there. I have 10 ladders, 12 hang on, 2 climbers and 1 hunting blind. You can never have enough stands the problem is all the while your sitting in one you know the big boy just walked under one of the other ones lol.

I had a summit viper and hated the weight of it. I ended up giving it to my nephew he was looking for a climber. I bought the lone wolf hand climber to replace it. It is the most uncomfortable stand I have ever been in. Light as heck for sure but there is zero room to even move in this thing. I used it one season and went out and bought a new summit last year and decided I will forgo the extra weight for the extra comfort of all day sits in it. Well I pulled that lone wolf of the wall in the shop last year for a long hike into state land once last year and I did not like sitting in that thing at all and wondered what was I thinking. When I say comfortable it just feels so unsafe sitting in that thing its freaks me out. The seat is small, base is small, they have straps that hold the seat in place by attaching it to the base. Without these straps your seat will fall when you stand up every time. The straps have plastic clips on them and both the clips broke the first few times I used it. I replaced them with metal ones but as far as IM concerned this thing will sit in the shop forever... I contemplated buying the other sit and climb seat for it but thats almost the same price alone as a new summit and it doesnt solve the platform size either. Alot of money for one of them.

Got a text today that the Gov signed the bill and Rifles are a go for this year.

A couple S600 shots and some others...
wdswtr replied to Chenango Dave's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Yeah they are horse flys or sweat bees, whatever you want to call them. Ticks wouldnt be so visible, -
Thanks I researched it a bit and come up with pricing for all the parts and the time invovled to be higher than I care to spend. One sight even said about 200 bucks total for a 35 mm film model and 200 to 300 for a digital homebrew and that was just getting the parts and building it yourself. Quality looks darn good though which would be a good reason I guess.

My hunting camp is in cortland county. Never seen one or havent heard a farmer in the area of my camp say they have either. I have been told many times not to even consider eating the boars. Shoot it and then sit over it for coyotes and get them too. Oh wait would that be baiting? Stick the sow on a bbq pit.
-
If anyone can get there hands on these homebrew trail cams you care to share some more info them?

What I have here is called cow parsnip. Looks very similar to hog weed but the top of the plant where the seeds are are a bit different. Cow parsnip from what dec said is more common and it will cause skin irritations to certain people. Glad it is cow parsnip and not hogweed.

I listened to an interview a few weeks back on the radio with Cuomo as the guest. He was asked if he was opposed or for hydro fracking. He did not clearly say no he wasnt but boasted the economic gains for NY if he signs when it crosses his desk. He sounded like he would sign. He was asked why he was considering it even though he opposed it in NYC. He said there was not enough information at that time to determine if it was safe so he was not ready to sign. He said that since then there has been zero evidence that it is not a safe if done properly and there has been no confirmed claims in PA that have led to believe it has caused any enviormental issues. Now dont shoot me all to heck Im just the messenger.
