  1. I think Fasteddie is right. i have the time to shoot 30 arrows a day. i would rather see someone shoots a x-bow good then someone who shoots a bow like crap in the woods Here is the definition of a Cross Bow. This definition is out of the Webster’s Dictionary & Thesaurus copy rite 1999. Cross – Bow: A weapon consisting chiefly of a bow mounted crosswise near the end of a wooden stock. seems like it a bow
  2. hey Doc you are right target with that post
  3. I'm for the use of x-bows but it doesn't mean i'm going to use one i shoot my bow way to good to wast my money on a x-bow. in the late season if i have a choice of what to use it wouldn't be a bow or a x- bow.
  4. I saw these same pic's a few years ago and they were from a mountain lion seen in Bath NY. that house and cat get around. I have to dig up my bigfoot pic's I have trail cam pic's of bigfoot
  5. I love to hunt Grouse after deer season. But the older I get the faster they get.
  6. Doewhacker I think your right on most of what you’re saying. What I’m trying to say is that when an AR is put in place people assume they are going to be able to kill lots of doe’s and then you will see more bucks that’s just not true and I can prove it. First When I say doe’s I mean females 1.5 years old and older not antlerless. Because at any time before the deer season ½ to 2/3’s of the antlerless population on a piece of land are fawns. If on your land you have 15 doe’s and 5 bucks (1.5 years and older) and you kill 10 doe’s and no bucks you still only have 5 bucks. What you have done is reduced the number of doe’s by 2/3’s. What you will see are more buck sightings per doe sighting and you will see fewer fawns the next year. Another example is in Allegany County a farmer started a QDM program on his 1700 acres. He went out at night spot lighting to see what kind of deer he had and he saw lots of antlerless deer. For 3 years they took over 40 doe’s a year using DMP’s and DMAP’s. He would let you hunt there but you had to kill doe’s no bucks. They would kill a few big bucks. Then in years 4-6 they started to kill fewer and fewer doe’s by year 6 they killed less than 10 doe’s and no bucks, saw plenty of bucks before the season but killed none. Funny thing started to happen, his neighbors started to kill big bucks, Most of them were not practicing QDM and they were not killing off all their doe’s so the bucks were moving to where the does are. What I believe he did was not only destroy his doe population he also destroyed the age structure of his doe herd. This is what I believe we are doing under the miss guided concept of killing doe’s gives you more bucks and the myth of the 1 to 1 buck to doe ratio. If anyone can show me how killing doe’s can give you more bucks that’s a trick I would like to see. With a birth rate at 50/50 bucks to doe’s I am not advocating not shooting doe’s(I killed 2 last year); what I am advocating is be careful on how many and where in the age structure you harvest the doe’s from.
  7. on the 44mag try a tapper crimp into the crimping groove also seat the bullet then crimp. don't do both at the sametime. the roll crimp works best with cast bullets that have a deep crimping groove.
  8. Right now their basically two groups of hunters out there those who want to see bigger buck and those who want to see more deer, there subgroups in each but these are the two primary groups. We were told if we wanted to see bigger bucks we needed to let small bucks walk, manage does (kill more does) this is not the same as antlerless. Letting young bucks get older makes scents they should get bigger. Killing does on the other hand is not so clear. Remember with a birth rate at 1 to 1 bucks to does. Random chance would say if you kill a 100 does 50 would of have had or would have buck fawns. The harvesting of doe’s makes scents; to control a population you need to add or subtract females; it doesn’t make scents to kill doe’s to see more bucks. The buck to doe ratio is not out of balance where hunting takes place. I am not advocating not shooting doe’s; what I am advocating is be careful on how many and where in the age structure you harvest the doe’s from.
  9. muzzy 3 blade 100gr shot right through the spine and out the chest. i only shoot 65lb's
  10. ny outdoor news, deer& deer hunting and ny game & fish i also liked ny state sportsman when that was around
  11. So not to upset you any more I will not use the word cougar any more. Even though the word cougar is another name for Mountain Lion it is also slang for OLDER WOMAN. And if you read any of the other post you would have seen that I do not think there are Mountain Lions in NY. Did you see Godzilla in my backyard?
  12. I guess you didn’t get the sarcasm. I didn’t say ML’s I said cougars in NY. GET IT!! Read it again
  13. The only cougar I have ever seen was back in 1981 when I was 23 and she was 35 she did not have big ears though. I also think there are cougars in NY
  14. What I have been tiring to convey to you is I don’t believe that an AR should be forced on anyone who doesn’t want it. If they think a 1.5 year old is a good deer who am I to tell them it’s not and that they shouldn’t be shooting that deer. I do practice QDM but I do not plant food plots I think it’s baiting. I am not going to get in the argument that is not baiting because it’s legal to plant food plots. We do habitat improvement.
  15. when my 14 year old son killed his first deer
  16. Hey Doc I went to archery talk and the Avon Bowmen did have a shoot (3d) last Oct 4. I know there place is on Pole Bridge RD the next time i stop at TW's i'll take a look.
  17. I have seen bears 4 or 5 times while hunting. the last time was this pass opening day of gun season for deer that 300lb+ bear came with in 20 feet I was hunting on the ground. I told it to get!! and it walked away. I did walk into one going to my stand during bow season in the dark and just yelled HEY BEAR!!! and it took off. nothing like a bear in the morning to wake you up better then coffee.
  18. Doc what i was tring to tell the guy it shouldn't matter how one measures success or whats a trophy is. to me success is measured on weather or not my 2 boys (16 & 14) have a good time in the woods. there just happy to see deer.
  19. You said it when you said what is a trophy. Then what do you say to the person who says any deer is a trophy to them. Is there 4pt. any less a trophy then my 150 class 11pt. no its not any less a trophy and I shouldn’t and no one else should tell them it’s not a trophy; you and I don’t have that right. So should we force them to hunt are way with some kind of AR. There are so few of us left. There are trophies everywhere no matter what standard you use; you just have to work for it.
  20. that hurts just waching
  21. I would like to hunt where a 120 to 150 class 8 or 9 point is a cull dosen't sound like QDM to me sounds more like trophy management or you are waching to much Lee & Tiffiny. no thanks
  22. i wear what my wife calls the orange cow suit during the gun season like to be seen the deer don't seem to mind at least the dead ones
  23. last weekend in may then check them labor day weekend
  24. the harvest data seems to say that is not the case check the first post i put on page 2 of this topic. you can go back 20 years and the data would be the same. you also have to remember poll returns are 18 to 22% and polls can be manipulated to say almost what you want look at this poll if you take no to ar's and wait a few years and add those numbers they are almost the same as yes to ar's far below the DEC 67% number to start a ar program. it is all in how and who looks at the numbers.
  25. I shoot at least 3 times a month till July 4 then it’s 30 arrows a day at 20 30 & 40yds then in September in shoot broad heads till hunting season
