"I notice that everyone that is "pro abortion" has already been born"

Update, So I have found this to be very strange for a Leupold scope not to have enough adjustment built into it, I have mounted many Leupolds for myself and for others when I worked in a gun shop and never have run into this problem but I have never used an HD model with a lock button. I just got off the phone with Leupold and they provided me with information that is not in the manual where it should have been and saved me a lot of time and ammo. They apparently ship this scope with it set in the middle of its range (which is normal), but I have to remove the elevation cap and adjust it down using a screw driver. I would not need to do this if I was adjusting my point of aim up, but need to do it if adjusting down. The rep said the "mechanical stop" prevents the downward adjustment initially, thus I must take off the cap to adjust point of aim down. So I took the cap off as instructed and there was no screw but there was a nut type adjustment and with a pair of pliers I turned it way down and put the lock cap back on.so now it should work. What a pain in the ass. I am sick of mounting and remounting, I have a ton of other things that need to be taken care of. So for now the little compact Redfield stays on the rifle. Al

So today I gave the Howa another range session after shimming the scope, in a nutshell no dice! She still shot way too high. So I am thinking the two scope used on the rifle were basically the same so i9t had to be those Tally mounts, off the came and I put the factory base back on, mounted up the HD Leupold and hit the range again, and again no dice, the scope just does not have enough built in elevation to bring her into my point of aim. So I just chalked it up, wasted enough ammo, and luckily I have other scopes I can use, sooo, back go on the Tally mounts and I mount the mini 3X9 USA Redfield that was on the Winchester 6.5 PRC. I am pretty sure the problem is solved from giving a look with my bore sighter, what I have seen so far the Hornady 123 gr SSTs are grouping the best. After putting everything away I look out at the range and there are 11 Turkeys out there scratching around, apparently all that gunfire did not faze them as only a few minutes had passed. Al

DEC Expands Bald and Golden Eagle Conservation Study
airedale replied to Steve D's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Control ammunition and you will control firearms, any kind of ban on lead core ammo will do just that. The Democrats are looking at every angle to get some kind of ban on traditional lead core bullets and believe me this is nothing more than the beginnings of a back door route to control firearms. First they tried to put a scare into hunters that ate their game meat shot with ammo that contained lead, when it was found that no human ever was proven to have been lead poisoned and become seriously ill from eating game meat they abandoned that line of crap. That did not stop NY from pulling their stunt with background checks and an added fee just to buy a box of ammo, they are going to make it as hard as they can. I have nothing against anyone that wants to fire copper ammo, I use copper bullets when I want to when the style and weight are suited for a certain load I want to try. The propaganda that a copper bullet is superior to a traditional lead core bullet is baloney! They are not more accurate, they do not kill any better than a quality traditional bullet and they cost twice as much with very limited availability. I have taken a fair amount of game in my lifetime and I can not think of one single instance where a copper bullet would have made any difference other than lightening my wallet, dead is dead! 151042 people died from various illegal drugs in this country last year, I would say their priorities about a few birds dying are misplaced! For exercise I have an Assault Air bike that gives pretty much a full body workout along with a stepper, both sit in my living room behind my couch in front of the TV. I do 20 minutes on the bike and 15 on the stepper. Going through the routine watching something interesting on TV makes the session go by quick and easy. Also have a couple of Bullworkers that I mess around with sitting here along side my computer. My every day farm chores will round out my daily workout. As for diet I am these days pretty much a carnivore disciple, I have been around for some time eating different ways. The standard American diet is pure poison and the reason so many people's asses are two axe handles wide and why they are in poor health. The carnivore route has made a believer out of me because it works exactly as advertised. I won't live forever but as long as I am around I want to be able to physically participate in the activities I love. youtube's Kelly Hogan, Dr Ken Berry, Dr Anthony Chaffee, Dr Shawn Baker and Dr Eric berg are my influencers and support. Try it for thirty days, go one day at a time, you will be a believer. Al

I hear you Doc, I am just glad that I can get out in the woods, get around halfway decent and still have some pretty fair days enjoying myself hunting. Al

Potential Squirrel Dog?
airedale replied to Northcountryman's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Just want to add that I do not want to make it sound like a hunter needs a number one dog to have success in the Squirrel woods, my Squirrel dogs have been just average, and I still had a blast and have killed a lot of Squirrels with them over the years. Once in a lifetime hunting dogs of any breed are as scarce as hen's teeth. Al -
I got a kick out of her and I agree that she was a great topic starter. Al

Look forward to it and I will be there! Al

Potential Squirrel Dog?
airedale replied to Northcountryman's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Having spent my life working and training various hunting dogs I have come to the conclusion that coming up with a number one Squirrel dog is one of the most difficult things to achieve in the hunting dog world. A top Squirrel dog has to use it's eyes, ears and nose. Squirrels are tricky little buggers, they run on the ground, they climb trees and will go up one tree and jump over to another and another (Timbering), it will take some kind of dog to stay with them. That being said when it comes to hunting dogs you never know until you try. I have seen dogs that one would not look at as a hunting breed yet they were terrific for certain kinds of hunting. One of the best Coon dogs I ever saw was a non-descript Collie type farm dog. Top squirrel dogs for the most part will come from breeds that are bred especially for Squirrel hunting and tested for many generations. Cur breeds and Fiest dogs are at the top of the list and are what most serious Squirrel hunters train and use. I have trained some of my Airedales to hunt Squirrels with reasonably good success, but many do not make it because they do not have the strong treeing instinct like the breeds mentioned above or some treeing Hound breeds especially on game that is very small like a Squirrel. I have a pup right now that is going to be tested and by the end of Squirrel season I should know if he has what it takes. The number one thing is getting them in the timber where you know there are Squirrels and observe. Below is a couple of photos, the blond dog is my buddy Pete Bassani's Kemmer Cur, he came up to my place for a hunt and to pick up an Airedale, she was a real good one. The other is of my TJ he was a pretty fair squirrel dog in his own right but not in the Kemmer's class. I can say this hunting with a good squirrel dog is about as much fun as it gets. Also I posted a little video that gives a short synopsis on training, there are many others on youtube if you get serious. Good Luck Al -
I don't believe fitness for hunting activities is stressed enough, and especially so when you get up in age. How many times do you hear about a hunter that keeled over in the woods? Had a guy I do some business with go down while Turkey hunting a couple of years ago. My next door neighbor keeled over while riding his AVT, they let themselves go to seed. Probably the biggest health factor is being overweight, just about every malady known will be affected by being overweight. Overweight? Many of these health problems will manifest themselves, it is just a matter of time. To name a few. High blood pressure Cardiovascular-heart Joints-osteoarthritis Sleep apnea-breathing problems Diabetes Asthma High cholesterol Stroke Fatty liver Gall bladder disease Gout Kidney disease Mental health So as far as I am concerned getting one's weight in the right range is the first order of business to get your health on the right track. Those weight charts that you see published are not far off the mark of what you should be weighing for the most part. As for exercise it too is important, but I do not think you have to work out like a pro athlete, a modest workout 20 minutes a day will do the trick. Al

Awhile back a family of Skunks decided to setup housekeeping and make a den under one of my sheds. My yard dog caught killed a couple of young ones making a stinky mess. I could have caught them by trapping, but my past experience trapping skunks was it is a stinky job that I did not want to deal with. Talking to a local farmer down the road and he suggested gas bombs he used for ridding rats and woodchucks, he said they worked great and were safe, put them down their holes and cover and it is lights out. So I got a couple of packages and followed the instructions, lighting the fuse and pushing them down the den hole. Looks like they worked, no Skunk signs or activity. Al

In search of brush hog
airedale replied to Big Indian's topic in Non Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
Check out the Binghamton Craigslist, also a Flail mower with hammer blades is a solid option. https://binghamton.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=brush hog#search=1~gallery~0~0 -
So today I got out the 6.5 PRC Winchester Model 70 and the Howa Super Light 6.5 Creedmoor for sighting and ammo testing. At the end of last year's hunting season I changed the scopes out on both rifles. I went with a little more power on the Winchester mounting a Burris 4.5x14 Timberline, the Super Light Howa got the same power scope but a different model, a HD 1X5 Leupold replaced a Leupold Vari X 3 1X5. I also went with a different set of mounts on the Howa using a Tally setup. Things did not go as I had hoped, the Howa with the factory base and Millet rings shot great for me last year. The new setup presented me a problem, the HD Leupold ran out of vertical adjustment printing my groups about 4 inches high at 75 yards, I was not happy. I had two choices, go back to the original scope mounts or try to shim the rear scope ring enough to bring the point of aim down where it belonged. I chose the latter and I shimmed the scope with some scope shimming material which consisted of very thin adhesive backed aluminum foil cut to fit inside the ring. I have yet to test it out as I did not get at it right away but it should solve the problem, I aint got to go down much. I had the Winchester to test out with some handloads loaded with 120 gr Barnes, to be honest they did not group quite as good as I had hoped. The speed was right on the money, a little over 3200 FPS out of a 24 inch barrel, they were advertised to be in the 3300 FPS area out of a 26 inch Barrel. I am going to play around with the overall length and see if I can get things tightened up. I have a couple of more loads to try out if these do not do what I want. This is the kind of stuff that makes things interesting and gives great satisfaction if the problems can be ironed out. Al

Now I do not see this in any way as some sort of drinking while shooting problem, what I see is a victory swig out of a bottle of beer after making a fantastic shot knocking off the cap. Al

Has to be a chore to bring up three, and they look nice and healthy. Al

Nice, you are laying them in there pretty good. Al
