  1. Keystone Cops VS Crazed Turkey! « on: May 20, 2006, 10:18:18 AM » A news story sent to me a few years ago that I saved. Al -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Too Funny! Madison residents may now have to watch out for wild turkeys causing damage on their property, according to a Tuesday police release. City police confirmed a “vicious” wild turkey broke into a house on the city’s West Side Apr. 7, causing damage inside the house and to property. “Initially the call came in as a burglary,” Madison Police Public Information Officer Mike Hanson said. “Officers arrived, saw a hole in the [window] glass and proceeded to investigate.” The owners were not home when police arrived, Hanson added. Police officers heard a noise in the kitchen and when they approached, the turkey flew at them, the release states. The officers quickly retreated from the house and called an Animal Control officer to deal with the situation. According to the release, the officer from the Humane Society gave police suggestions with how to remove the turkey. Hanson said officers tried using a blanket to usher the turkey out but to no avail. Soon, the animal began pecking its beak on the dry wall so the officers threw water at it but “that didn’t work either,” Hanson added. Following these incidents, the officers then built a funnel from the furniture provided, but the turkey continued upstairs to the home’s study area, the report states. At this point, police were concerned the turkey would create further damage inside the house, so an officer deployed a taser onto the bird. The taser momentarily stunned the turkey, which froze and then flew toward the ceiling, breaking a light fixture, according to the report. Hanson said the taser was deployed a second time, which caused the bird to fly down the stairs and out of the house. According to Shannon Olcott, an animal control officer said there have been an increased number of calls about wild turkeys. This could be attributed to turkey mating season, Olcott said. Olcott also added mating turkeys can be attracted to their own reflection, which could possibly attribute to the broken glass the officers found. “People aren’t accustomed to seeing them,” she said of the large birds, adding Animal Control deals with animals that have been injured or trapped. But Hanson said the whole incident and property damage is uncommon in Madison. “There’s been a lot of wild turkey complaints, [but] not necessarily about house damage,” he said. Serious Airedales For Serious Work
  2. The BSA "sweet 22" should work fine for your rifle. Al
  3. Your problem can be linked to either your scope or ammo and maybe a combo of both. When a gun starts shooting off all of a sudden more than likely the scope has moved either by banging it or the mounting has somehow loosened. All guns will have an ammo preference from both accuracy and in the case of autoloaders functioning reliably. In most cases a good brand of standard velocity ammo will give the best accuracy. A 22 rimfire barrel rarely becomes fouled enough to cause any drastic loss in accuracy unless it has damage in side like bad pitting or rough rifling that peels the bullet as it travels down the barrel. Rimfire barrels like to be seasoned, on some of my guns I have fired several thousand rounds between cleanings with zero effect on accuracy. In fact after a good cleaning it will usually take a couple of hundred rounds to get it back to where it was. With autoloaders the action and chamber will have to be cleaned from a function standpoint. One more thing for optimum accuracy a scope for a 22 needs to either be a dedicated rimfire scope or a scope that has the ability to adjust for parallax at the shorter ranges they are generally shot. 4. Got an email from Natchez, they are having a Leupold closeout sale on the V3s, no blues left on the 2.5 X 8 but they have some silver ones in stock at a pretty good price. http://www.natchezss.com/leupold-vx-3-riflescope-495703.html?trk_msg=16F4R45HCUR4DFQ520NM7JUIUS&trk_contact=UOD249DHACGLTH0GUNNAC7NC6K&utm_source=Listrak&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=http%3a%2f%2fwww.natchezss.com%2fleupold-vx-3-riflescope-495703.html&utm_campaign=Feb_08_2016_Leupold&utm_content=Feb_08_2016_Leupold
  5. I Like the JSB pellets, they have produced good results in both accuracy and hunting. As for a scope because of the shorter ranges that an air rifle can be used effectively you must have a scope that can eliminate parallax. All dedicated air rifle scopes should be good and also good quality 22 rimfire scopes work well. Al
  6. Just adding a quick review on the Polaris 570 sportsman after a year and a half ownership. First of all I am not a trail rider that goes on long distance rides. I got this machine for light duty work around my small farm, stuff like hauling feed or hay and pulling a small wagon for yard work and light duty stuff along with hopefully helping me drag out a big buck some day. These work tasks have been performed flawlessly so far. Starting mine has not been a problem for two winters in sometimes pretty cold conditions. I am an old guy so I do not get too crazy going fast or taking jumps but I can say she goes right along and handles well for me on all types of terrain, for now I have no complaints and I am happy with the purchase. 7. Back in the late seventies and early eighties I worked in a friend of mine's sporting goods store. During that time we sold hundreds and hundreds of scopes of all brands that were popular back then and would mount them on the customer's gun for free. If they had any problems like fogging, lens cracking, crosshairs failing and adjustments that stopped working we would take care of it, boxing them up and sending them back to the factory for repair or replacement. By the way fogging was probably the number one issue we had. I can tell you most problems happen in the field when the scope was needed most and I heard about a lot of scope horror stories. Back in them days we mounted a lot of scopes on slug guns for deer hunters and they could and would do a number on any scope because of the severe recoil. Anyhow out of all the scopes we sent back and there were quite a few we only had one Leupold incident and it was because the front lens loosened slightly and by the way replaced at no charge. Al
  8. All of my get serious rifles have Leupolds mounted on them, some go back to the late 60s and they are as good today as they were when I bought them, zero issues. My favorite for big game is the 2x7. Al
  9. I have taken one Coyote with a 410 slug, I will say somewhere around fifty yards. Hit behind the front shoulder it went down instantly and barely moved. I like the Brenneke 1/4 oz slugs they shoot fairly accurate in my Savage 24. Below is Brenneke's data it clearly shows these slugs have more than enough power for Coyote as long as they are used within their limits. .410 Bore 3" Length Rifled Slug 1/4 Ounce Slug Smooth bore shotguns, or Rifled Revolvers like Taurus Judge All chokes Muzzle velocity: 1755 fps Muzzle energy: 781 ft/lbs
  10. TJ and a couple of Pheasants from about a decade ago Al
  11. The 9mm is my choice because of the power difference, the manufacturers have made great strides in recent years getting the size of 9mm pistols down pretty close to the small cc 380s. The size issue was the 380's only advantage. Al
  12. I have a CZ Ringneck in 28 ga that I picked up a few years ago and it is one sweet little double, she handles and carry's like a dream, very good quality in my opinion. I believe the CZ doubles in both sxs and o/u are the best values out there at this time for those types of shotguns. As for the 28 ga I have done alright with it using the 3/4 and 1 oz loads. The shells are a little on the pricey side and not always easy to come by, I just picked up a used MEC loader so I can shoot and enjoy this little double a lot more. A Grouse that I took with my 28ga a few years ago. Al
  13. Not too many things more fun than hunting Hare with a good Beagle. A couple of photos of my old Beagle Josie and some Hare we took back in the day when I had hair. Al
  14. Hunting in the woods with relatively short ranges or open country where shots could be taken out to several hundred yards, maybe a combination of both? Calling in the woods I have never taken a shot over sixty yards, I have successfully used a 22 LR, 22 Mag, 17 HMR also with a shotgun loaded with buck and once took one with a 410 slug. Open country is a different story, I like something that can get out there a bit, most of the 22 center fire varmint cartridges will work well, I trend toward the upper end stuff like a 22/250 and my favorite the 220 Swift. For an all around rifle in most Coyote hunting situations a 223 in a bolt action or an autoloader that looks and feels right and shot well would be tough to beat. The ammo availability in 223 is also a factor that makes it a favorite. Al
  15. As far as I can tell the only person who knows if this guy was actually going for his gun is now dead, all else is speculation.
  16. Those are not fur friendly bullets, in other words if you are looking to sell the hides you should use a less explosive bullet especially on Fox. In the 22 caliber I like Sierra 52 grain match bullets, they are very hard and do not expand so violently as a varmint bullet. They will do the job very well without blowing huge holes in your hides. Al
  17. One of the great caliber/rifle combos that really fit the "brush gun" terminology. Al
  18. A 270 or 280 would be my choice in a bolt action light weight sporter with a 22 inch barrel. Al
  19. There are rubber liners that can be used where there is leaky soil, it will certainly add to the cost but if one is determined to have a pond it is possible to dig one almost anywhere. Al
  20. What cracks me up is how this Ted Cruz statement was twisted into something about 9/11 when it was nothing of the kind and anyone with a half a brain knows it. It was about the politics of NY City and Cruz was not lying. The mayor and our fearless leader Cuomo want an apology, remember what Cuomo said in and interview just a couple of years ago. "The Republican Party candidates are running against the SAFE Act — it was voted for by moderate Republicans who run the Senate! Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are."
  21. Hevi-Shot is comprised of tungsten alloy (tungsten is an element which is harder than steel/iron), nickel, and iron. Hevi-Shot pellets are very hard and they must be contained within a special non-toxic shotcup. With the above being the case I would not shoot Hevi Shot out of any older shotguns that did not have barrels that were proofed for steel. Al
  22. Quite a bit in the summer, not much in the winter. Al
