  1. Not even a conversation here no no no I don't wanna deal with that situation at all.
  2. I spent alot of time in the field when I was younger. Some say damn the economy's bad and your getting unlimited O.T.It sounds great But I lost my closest hunting buddy 3 yrs ago now my sons old enough to hunt.We really enjoy our time out there.I think now at 49 I have to reconnect with it all and I know I belong out in the woods so a career change might be a better choice now.I just wanted everyone to know that time is short and don't feel either way that you haven't balanced it out.I love the outdoors in many stages and I could see being there til the end.
  3. I have used this recipe for about 15 yrs in my processing when I cut deer this time of year and its my best seller
  4. First of all its state land there a possibility of bigger bucks. If there's lots of hunting pressure chances are the bucks don't get a chance to mature.2 things before moving on ask some land owners within the area if they see bigger bucks.Try this off season a trail cam or 2 most hunters don't follow up during the off season your cams will be safe.if there's big bucks around lots of factors go into weather you get one or not if they are there.Find food sources find out where the does are this is the time of the yr that your chances of a big buck are best prerut and beginning of the rut.I hunt private land and the bigger bucks are just starting to show themselves I might not get one of them but I know they are there.Oh on more big factor set up several locations a mature buck will catch on real qiuck as to a dangerous situation.I am glad you lost that its brown its down syndrome its not good for our sport.Management's our game.Good luck.
  5. Sweet hickory smoked breakfast sausage. By the pound its easier to make. 1 lb venison cubed .25 lb pork trimmings.cubed 1 tsp sage 1tsp thyme. 1tsp brown sugar 1tsp maple syrup. 1tsp liquid smoke(hickory preferly) 1 pinch cracked black pepper. 1 pinch salt. add all ingredients in bowl mix well put in fridge over night grind through your choice blade in grinder I prefer my sausage chunkier so I use a 3/8'' grinder plate. This is my own recipe and can be altered for some elses taste. Let me know how it goes.
  6. I have used golden estrus and matric doe in heat 2001. Both have produced bucks for me.Actually i have been very successful in the last 10 to 12 yrs.I have put a number of bucks on the wall.I think the way I use them has been key.Prerut I drag starting about 60 to 100 yards from my stand. Then around my stand 15 to 20 yards then hang in a shooting lane.I also set up mock scrapes in some of the same locations.I think you have fool the buck long enough to get the shot I have noticed if the doe's not there they dont hang around long and the older and more mature he is the less time he sticks around and also the more nervous he becomes.
  7. That was great I just wanted everyone to really think about everything past and present in your life.It goes so fast with so much going on all the time. Kenny Chesney's don't blink sums it up so well.We just all seem to get caught up in life.Next yr I will be half a century old and just can't believe how fast it got here. Before we know it we'll be 70 standing on our porch waving good bye to our great grand children and their kids. But the thing that really hits me is I sit in the same patch of woods every yr and realize it has changed too.But its still such a quiet and great place to be and then I think the animals here are probably 10 generations older then when I first stepped foot here with dad.
  8. I am writing this topic just to let hunters and outdoors people know that dont take for gratited the time in the outdoors.I work 65 to 80 hrs a week I hunt maybe 2 times aweek.Having sundays and a qiuck spot during the week to get out.Everyone knows how important time out in the woods should be.every tree ,bush, animal,I take the time to enjoy every moment given to me these days plus I am no young gun blazing around the woods anymore passing this great time onto my son now days.So take it all in if your young learn as much as you can now.If your middle of the road share what you learned savor the moments for great memories and most of all take to heart every single second your here to do it.After all your here one time.
  9. I have also in the past dealt with such stupidity. No though it's not illegal its never a wise choice. My suggestion is avoid him if it comes to the point where he's over the limit and is visably intoxicated. Most law enforcement even though not illegal do have the power to remove the person for thier own safety and the safty of others and theres also the law of public intoxication in some areas.Good luck and be careful
  10. Sounds good don't know about everyone else but it would bother me if they went state wide with AR.
  11. Ya dont worry about it everyones right deer see death all the time
  12. Yes your right but the guy I was using I found out that thats all he was doing and I should have known it when I went to his shop and he had so many guys working on the scraping and turning process.I know tanning costs money last one I did I did with liq tan from vandykes it took awhile even though they say it faster and easier.I like the way it works and I have no complaints.
  13. AR is a start its opposed by many in the areas the state has AR. Its only one step in a Q.D.M.A. program most oppose change. Most hunters oppose any of these ideas. If 50% of us practices some form of the programs it would make a difference. As for AR ya it lets the little one grow another yr.but it doesn't help with less genetically mature bucks. I shot a big racked 5 pt buck 2 yrs ago in 3J he was 5.5 yrs old he should have been harvested before that.He actually looked funny I was going to pass on him but realized that he needed to be harvested.Like ny hunting nut says Q.D.M.A. is not just about antlers and foodplotd theres so much more involved. I read a very good story once by wiley marburger called the king of deer a great story its only art of the equasion but none the less a great book.If you take the time to research what its all about everyone would relize how much work needs to be done and how long it takes and thats if everything goes as planned. The state call implement any program it wants but we the hunting population need to want it to work and get involved to ensure ithappens and its successful.
  14. I have been processing deer now for over 25 yrs. I have been a stable servant for my growing loyal customers for these yrs.I have for many yrs offered sausages, jerkys, corned venison and brats, at bottom prices.I custom cut a customers deer to his or her likes and needs and always get great feedback.I don't cut deer up in lots of 10 or assemblyline them. One at a time with a day or 2 lead time.Last yr I had a guy bring in a deer he inspected my processing area asked for referances saticfied I processed his deer. Then he complained about the amount of meat I offered a refund,a discount on another deer,I even offered to process my own deer for him.for weeks this went on and on.He finally took the refund complained to a customer of mine and walked off.I found out later on through another processer he did this to several people. He didn't damage my rep but he left me humilated, withdrawn, and most of all embarrest.I am in orange county in walden.I remember him well after a yr I have put this behind me.I am telling my story because I want everyone to know that you cant base you emotions, success or failures on one persons ignoriance.Oh if the guy involved reads this just to let your sorry self know you actually made my business stronger.I have more clients.I have a clientlist on a first name basis.I get christmas cards, tips, gift cards,Offers to attend their everyday functions. So keep scamming people.By the way I put the word out about YOU TOO!
  15. Most of the time dead deer dont affect other deer maybe just for a day or so.I have shot deer and had others walk up on them and not even give it another look.I have had fawns come and lay down next to does .If it smells just drag it away from your stand but when you disturb the woods is when you change the deers patterns. Also I have had deer come crashing through the woods knowing they were shot and never seen the hunter follow up so ya it might have happened that way to.
  16. Cut it into 1 to 1.5 invh pieces and dont freeze totally. It will grind easier and more thoughly. If you decide to make chop meat you can do the same with your mix trimmings to.
  17. For anyone interested check out this facebook page HB venison processing,I'm in the lower Ulster upper Orange 3j,3m area.Good luck and be safe.
  18. I saw this topic and had to reply.I am a big fan of Q.D.M.A.I believe that this is a broad topic. It includes age, nutrition, habitat, buck to doe ratio's,genetics etc.Yes its more of a personal responsibility here in N.Y.I have been practicing this for about 16 yrs on 155 acres of property my neighbors first were skeptical then jealous. Most still won't get involved to much work they say.Heres what I have done. I first opened a couple fields in a central location setup smaller more secluded openings even a couple corridors like small wood roads. Doug a small pond in spring fed hollow about 10 ft deep by 24 feet around.put in 2 small orchards apples and pears. Also places about 20 crab apple trees through out the property.I plant about 15% with food plots.I trimmed my oak grove a big 8 to 10 acre area for better acorn production.I set aside about 10 % for sanctuary. That includes a swampy area behind and to the north of the pond and also included the oak and apple groves in it.I hunt only for 2.5 or older bucks and we harvest more does then bucks every yr.I plant exclusively whitetail institutes products produced solely for deer. Its alot of work and I always have guys hunting the edges of the property that just wanna shoot deer. If everyone did something to help it would make a tremendous impact. I feel if the state would do 2 things. One is find a way to let our buck population mature and 2 educate the states hunting population to the rewards of Q.D.M.A.I think then things would start to change abit. I also believe if landowners would allow hunters more to apply this to their properties then they would have less crop damage or ornamental damage. We have to all be alittle more educated and willing to atleast try somethings to change our states deer population outlook we have a northern strain of deer in ny that could very well compete with some of the mid west and northern areas as far as producing record book bucks. Think about it for a minute. We could do it.
  19. Yes good luck to all and above be safe
  20. Didnt think about how much of a reply I'd get. Theres alot of prep work involved but its exciting to see the end result. You have to scrap the hide, turn the eyes ,ears, lips and remove the cartledge from the nose. After that its not to much work to mount the hide on the manniquin. As far as quaility you get out what you put in.I have done mounts for and they were thrilled with there mounts.I even had a taxidermist ask if I wanted to work with him.I know I underpriced for my freinds but I enjoyed it more then it was about money to me.I honesty think that if a taxidermist is doin a great professional show type mount ya 450 to 500 is fair but I have mounted my own deer that look better then a couple I had done and I paid 400 to 500 for those.Yes hands on work per deer is about 10 to 14 hrs but if you have time and can get better at it then its not about time its about quaility of the work and whos doin it.I dont mind if the taxidermist is doing it himself but one of my mounts were contracted out.and it raised the price 100 dollars. If you want a mount by a your taxidermist then he should do the work. But the whole thing for me was from the field to the wall I did it all.
  21. buck urine and a bit of doe in heat lightly around a mock scrape best results around the later stages of the prerut and beginning of the rut be for lockdown. I have taken my 2 biggest buck this way.this yr try around nov 8th to nov14th.There you go short and to the piont oh ya alittle interdigital gland lure on the licking brances very light also.its gotta feel real to a mature or dominate buck.
  22. I just purchased a remington 770 300 win mag big knock down power good gun priced around 300 w/ a 3x9 40mm scope they come in 243,270,30-06,308, 7mm,7mm-03 and 300 win mag.Its boresighted out of the box I was sighted in in 3 shots. Its lighter in weight sythetic stock has rings for a sling 3 shot removalable clip. Dicks has the green stock on sale for 279.00 now this week. I really like the way the gun preforms and handles.Maybe you could check it out.
  23. I had my first 2 deeer mounted I went to the best place around so after $1000 and 2 seasons I decided to give it a try.I bought a video and guide book and took up the art of mounting deer. Its rediculious I feel to pay $400 to $600 a mount When once you buy the the starter kits and tools your mounting kits only run between $70 to $125 I have mounted my last 12 bucks. The thing that really caught my attention was the studio that mounted my biggest buck I found out later actually contracted the mount out because he was overwelmed that yr and I didnt get it back til the next september. Anyway just thought I would pass this along to all you guys who get a decent buck every fews yrs it really is alot of fun also it cool to see it come back to life on your wall.
  24. The fine will be the same as if you got caught thats why I am against what they did just make them legal during the regular bow season.I already know people who are going to do it and I will be the first to urn them in.I makes no since to use a crossbow in place of a rifle or muzzleloader.Espec- ailly during those seasons.
  25. I bank on the first 10 days for the best prerut and chase timing. I will be doing my heaviest hunting and using my calls and scents more around this time starting with drag trailing doe in heat in a 60 to 100 yd area around my stands to later say the 10 of nov til around the 15 th when I will use mock scrapes with a combo of buck urine and some doe in heat they have been killer setups in the past just have to know when and how much to use.I have been pretty lucky in yrs past with this I can only think of 2 yrs that I had not been successful good luck guys and be safe.
