  1. Nice buck! Congratulations. Hopefully it didn't go far in the rain.
  2. Many hunters on the island take does for the meat. If I was lucky enough to see a monster buck in my area, being I might only have 1 buck tag, why wouldn't you hold off and try to get him? But ,I think most of us on the island would take a doe or a smaller buck if hunting public land. If you have private property you might wait and hope that he'll make it to next year and gain some size.
  3. Many of the deer also live close to the shoreline. I think it's a combination of the various food sources, zero predators, back yards to bed near, and many of the larger bucks only moving at night. Any of the spots I've hunted near the water seem to have larger deer, maybe it's the salt?
  4. Yeah, I've ridden the bike through there. Always on the lookout for them. Don't want to hit 1 and go down.
  5. Anyone hear of a big buck shot in western Suffolk on the Northshore? Someone showed me a picture, but didn't give me details.
  6. Anyone hear of a big buck shot in western Suffolk on the Northshore? Someone showed me a picture, but didn't give me details.
  7. Sat for the afternoon on Sunday, I dint see a thing. No deer, squirrels, not even a bird. The trees were shaking like crazy. I did set up a camera again, so hopefully I'll get a few pictures from it.
  8. I had a portable ladder stand when I first started hunting. The thing worked great, i could get in Any tree. The only downside was the height, only about 12-15 ft up. It was set up as a backpack style carrier and was aluminum. I still have it, but would only recommend it to youth or hunters that don't weigh too much. I think it was made by Loc-on? I wish someone would make one that is aluminum and a little more sturdy, I'd buy it in a minute.
  9. Sadly, he sounds like a guy I hunted with in the past. Notice, I said the past. This guy would run out of arrows, because he would shoot at any deer even if he knew the shot was a bad angle. Then, by luck he hit a doe with a spine shot, and didn't have any arrows to finish her off. The guy actually said that he meant to do a spine shot, so she wouldn't run. I have never hunted with him after that day. Some people just don't get what hunting is about. I have passed up numerous deer, either because of shots being too far, bad angles, or deer being too small. It's more enjoyable to watch them walk away then limp away because of you didn't care about shot placement or the recovery of the animal. While I live on the Island and hunt here and upstate, I have always noticed that some unethical hunters give most of us a bad name. Bottom line is that you have no business in the woods if you can't take the time to recover the animal you shoot.
  10. That was the same problem I've been having. The bucks seemed to still be moving at night.
  11. Antlers, I hunt the same area. What time did he come in? I got a few bucks, but they all are moving after 6:00 pm. I'm hoping the rain or some rutting does will get them moving during the day.
  12. I think my heart would still be beating fast from shooting that buck. Real nice looking buck. Dark rack is nice too. Congratulations .
  13. This guy came in the other night. Nice scrapes and a good rub line. Hopefully he'll come in earlier, and let me get a shot.
  14. Congratulations to both of you ! I'm sure it makes an even better memory that you when hunting with your dad.
  15. I would still watch out for any traps he might of set for Troopers looking for him...
  16. They're making any Commercial use of a drone illegal. There was just 2 idiots the decided to buzz the George Washimgton Bridge and NYPD helicopter that was flying by. They both got a new set of bracelets and lost their drone. Some have a longer distance than others. There's a YouTube guy that has a full auto Glock attracted to his.
  17. I use the dryer. Then hang them outside. If they're damp they will pick up a mildew scent after awhile. The dryer sheets that smell like earth are made for hunting clothes and work well from my experience. I also usually just throw 1 of them or a scent wafer in the tub with my stuff. They're made by the same company and can be bought at Dicks.
  18. A six last week, turkey, and a few does. Nothing offering a shot. Fresh rubs and scrapes this week.
  19. Where are you hunting? Swampy area ? Coyotes? Smell the arrow , look at the blood. If you're not sure, back out and wait till the morning. If you're on the Island, let me know.
  20. Bought a cheaper model that was on sale. We already had 3 ticketed/ stopped by DEC. They still don't get it. Unfortunately, the courts don't see trespassing, baiting, jacking as serious crimes and these idiots just come back the next year hoping to get away with it. I've hunted private spots out east where someone planted weed in the corn fields.
  21. There's some real nice spots out there. A lot of the home owners are away someplace warm by this time. Like Virgil said, if it goes on someone's property they will try everything to NOT let you retrieve the deer. I've had notes left on truck, threats, and police called for no reason. Most of them suck. Unless it's a farm, good luck. Best bet is to call DEC and see if they can assist you in recovering the deer, so you don't get arrested for trespassing. Remember the judge you will see lives there too. Good luck
  22. Just got it this year. Maybe it will help pin point the times a little better, if it survives? The piece I hunt has had an influx of trespassing a**holes that can't read. They cut branches, screw steps into trees, mess up the place. The owner gets real pissed, which makes it harder for me to get permission each year.
  23. Nice buck. Really, really nice for a first buck. Glad to see you got him.
