  1. that would be awesome to see those pics...id love to find a den....guess i need some better tracking skills to do that
  2. Where is it? What's the name?
  3. Well I am planning on going at least once a week from now thru October to practice at the local range for at least an hour. So I think doing that I should be able to be prepared come hunting season. Do you ever bowhunt from the ground?
  4. My first time turkey hunting this spring I called two birds in on seperate occasions. First time the bird was close...maybe 40 yards or so...behind a lot of brush...i was nervous to take the shot since I did not have a very clear shot. In hindsight I probably should have taken the shot because this was the only day I had any chance. Second time I called a bird in ever closer...about 30 yards. I didn't even realize he was there because he came in silently and did not call to me at all. I turned my head from left to right and then next thing I hear some cackling and see the bird flying off. A very dissapointing sight! Beginnger blues I guess...but none the less it was a hell of a time. I would really like to go with someone who knows what they are doing so I could pick up some tricks and what not.
  5. How do you guys differ your calls from the spring during fall season? I read the kee kee run is good to use? What are your strategies?
  6. Well being where I live in NYC all everyone is going to do is try and sell me what they have in their store. Not that I would have a problem buying here but of course I want the best deal for my money. I am going to start going to this archery pro shop right here in Queens and see what the guy has to offer. I am hoping he can setup me up proper.
  7. Butchering is awesome but certainly time consuming. Having someone teach you is the best way. My girlfriend's father showed me how to do it. I watched him do a few deer at first and then the last time I killed a deer down in Virginia I did it myself with him instructing. Personally I think that is the best way to learn. I am exciting to go back to Virginia because there are plenty of deer to kill and he is a good teacher since he has probably gutted, skinned, and butchered hundreds of deers in his lifetime. So I am confident enough to do it on my own now but I definitely need plenty more practice before I would consider myself good. If you want to be real lazy you can get all the big parts of meat off the deer without even gutting it. I do not like this method however because if you are a meat lover then you miss out on a lot.
  8. Hey guys, I am starting bowhunting this year. Actually already have a whole week of planned vacation to go hunt the first week in October. I have shot bows before and I have been given two by friends to practice with. I am not worried about getting my shooting down and all that since I have shot a lot in high school. What I would like to know is what equipment do you think is essential to have. Besides the bow, arrows, and a nice broadhead. What is the best way to get spec'd in for a bow? I know there are different draw weights and draw lengths....what is the best way to determine that based on my body size? And what other equipment should I look in to getting? Thanks
  9. great thinking on the food plots...they will definitely become great spots for the animals
  10. I honestly want to trap the coyotes so there will be more small game around...I know where I hunt the coyotes are getting to be a huge problem.
  11. I think I am going to try and do some crow hunting this year.
  12. I would love to learn trapping...kind of hard when you do not have your own property and have to travel everywhere. Plus I would really want someone to teach me how to do everything. I would like to learn how to do the tanning of hides because I am very interested in that part. Tough living in nYC and wanting to do all of these hunting activities.
  13. Do you guys like the Summit stands a lot? I was thinking of getting one since whenever I go hunting I am traveling to some place. I do not have anywhere to setup a permanent stand. I do a lot of hunting in state game lands so i was thinking of getting one of those climbing stands. Is it possible to get up a tree if there are small branches on it though? Do you need the tree to be bear (have no branches) up to the point where you want to be in the air? The summits look real nice and I have read great reviews on them. I need to get one soon though.
  14. interesting to know...never realized they were omnivores
  15. def. coyote....i see that scat all around
  16. When I hunt on my friends property up in Jefferson you can hear the Coyotes all night long. There has to be a lot of them around. The actual property I hunt on is at the top of a ridge and you can just hear the yotes calling to each other across the valley all night long. I have not really tried to hunt them yet but I think if I brought the electronic caller out I have I could definitely bring a few in. Might have to try that sometime!
  17. What 30-06 did you guys get? Is that the Ar-15? I fired the AR-15 with Jeff....the gunshot made my head ring for an hour
  18. Can't wait to come up and visit Uncle John!
  19. Has anyone hunted crow before? I was wondering what tactics you use when you do. I was also wondering if anyone has ate crow before and how good it tastes?
  20. Anyone have any tips on hunting grouse without dogs? My friends property has tons of grouse and I have tried hunting them before but they are not easy. Especially when you are walking through the thickness they usually are flying away and scaring the shit out of you before you have time to even draw the gun around.
