A while back I posted about getting a letter from NY Dept of Labor. It said I had enough weeks to open a new claim. Well, I called gave them all the info faxed them check reciepts from places I worked. Got a letter yesterday said I made x amount of dollars and I don't qualify for benefits. I can't even collect the benefits I'm still owed!!! I'd only used forty weeks out of a possible ninety nine but because I actually got up and looked for work and did indeed find some part time work I no longer qualify for squat. I would have been better off to sit on my arse and done nothing. In effect they are punishing me for going out and finding employment even though it was ten days here, two weeks here, and etc etc. Now the wife and I are gonna be in a real bind. Going to have to apply for food stamps. Got a letter from a local community assistance legal group about filing for Social Security disability much as I hate the idea I might have to do that. Or worse go on Public Assistance. Just proves no good deed goes unpunished.

As I understand it both tags are legal and will continue to be.

Waiting till Nov coons should be prime then no sense catching blue coon as it ain't worth it $$$ wise. fox and coyote come in a week or so later.

Someone mentioned my screen name "gutpile" interesting story. Back in 89 I was working in Detroit to disassemble an RR carne for shipment to buffalo where we rebuilt these thing been out working 30yrs. We tuned in to a local station and the weeks guest DJ was none other than uncle ted and he was always talking about steaming gutpiles. back then i loved his music today I love his politics. He tells it like it is; I have all his books and if he says something he means it so I took gutpile as my SN in honor of uncle Ted

Most hunters wouldn't be offended by blood soaked pictures. However, I have a deep respect for the game animals I take. Cleaning up an animal isn't about not offending anyone but to depict the animal in a more natural way and to give it in death the same respect as in life. IMHO. Everyday I'm in the woods wether I kill an animal or not I give thanks to my maker for the day. And when I do make a kill I offer up to him thanks for a beautiful animal. And that is what I CHOOSE to photograph

mossy 725 I agree completely. There are photos we show only among hunting buddies and those we show family or other interested parties. Just like those nudie photos in your password protected computer files.

Posted this in bowhunting for max exposure (forgive the pun) I'm no professional when it comes to taking pictures but I've learned a few things. Never take just one picture! With todays digital cameras there's no cost for developing so load up that card you can always delete what you don't like or want. Me I still use film. Take shots from different angles. Get some as close as possible with just your face and the whole of the deers head. Watch the sun you don't want to shoot with the sun directly behind the subject all you get is shadows. Sun at an angle sun behind the camera. move away get the hunter and deer from various angles. don't be afraid to include the bow or put the bloody arrow across the rack. Then shoot some funny shots or artst fartsy types. I generally shoot a whole roll of 36 on one buck. Remember each deer is a once in a lifetime event the next one will be an entirely different experience. Don't fudge it by being frugal.

Doc unfortunately you are right feral hogs are here. Last year four were sighted in Alleghany State Park. I've heard rumors that claim they were all killed by hunters. But you know rumors. And even if four were killed the question becomes just because only four were sighted doesn't mean that there were only four there how many weren't seen? I don't know how many hunters I've talked to that think it would be great to have pigs to hunt. I try and tell them what a disaster pigs would be but they say not with good management. Problem is good management is eradication and once established that's impossible. I then tell these guys go ask the landowner/farmer where you hunt what they think of having wild pigs on their land. Most people don't understand that wild pigs are like zebra mussels they have no predators in the wild except man. Even wolves won't take on a wild pig.

Make sure those strape between your legs are good and snug. If not and you fall you will be singing several octaves higher.

Hate to say this but I'm gonna anyway. Only a COMPLETE IDIOT would get up in any kind of stand without a safety harness.

Want to hear a good one. And I swear its true. Fella I know is a safety nut!!!! Never climbs without the proper safety gear. Two years ago mid bowseason he goes up on a new spot with his climber. Finds a nice spot in the dark near corn and alfalfa fields. Sets his climber attaches his harness and up he goes. Just after sunup the wind picked up and he discovers he's setup in a DEAD F__ING tree. Tree starts to go over and he tries to jump for an old hay bale. Unfortunately he's hooked to the tree. Took a pretty good lick but ended up with only minor cuts and some dandy bruises. Now he checks the tree first.

Wooden home made stand have got to be the most danerous stands there are. Unless checked over every year as rain,snow, and tree growth can and do make them unstable. Not to mention even pressure treated wood will rot around nails or screws in time.

Q Foodplots are plants ie crops designed to bring deer to an area most are designed (mixes of different type plants) so as to feed deer all summer and into the hunting season. So what is the difference between baiting and foodplots? Except foodplots are a lot more work. OH and currently legal.

Climb like a monkey with em. The biggest mistake I see guys make with climbers is they don't check the section they just moved to make sure its secure before putting their full weight on it.

My cousin fell last year no harness cracked three vertebrae. Not so funny part he only fell 5-6 feet. Guy down the street fell while stacking firewood he'll never walk again. The height of the fall isn't as important as how you hit or what you hit. Remember its not the fall that hurts/kills you its the stop at the bottom. My cousin and I went out yesterday to put up his stand. Before we left the house I made sure he had a safety harness and knew how to use it. I think he's spooked that's why he asked if he could hunt with me this year. I told him if I catch him in the stand without using his harness I'll take a hacksaw to his stand and a willow branch to him. I don't detach from the tree until both feet are on the ground. But that won't keep you from tripping over a branch in the woods and breaking your neck. OH one other thing a safety harness is useless if you climb a dead tree. Read about a guy who did that. ONCE!!!!

I know there are places where outfitters cater to deer hunters. But if they spot a hog instruct the client to shoot it on the spot no charge.

I know the NY record for coyote is a bit over 80lbs so they can get pretty large I've trapped several that topped fifty. I once had a guy tell me he saw a forty pound red fox on his farm; during the trapping season I caught a yote that was as red as any redfox I've ever seen. As to shooting year round on state land there is an area not to far from me where there is an area that is an unofficial target range. The only thing they get really upset over is people using things like glass bottles, old dishes, and etc as targets. And campers, hikers, and etc avoid the area like the plague. What worries me about a year round hunting season is that some hiker or biker could possibly move undetected into the line of fire just as you squeeze off at a yote. There are rules in effect to take care of the problem yote the ones attacking livestock or in residential areas where they may become aggressive to people. One thing I've found is at different times a lot of the yotes I catch have mange but the fox are clean. Mange is spread through direct contact. All animals including man have some mange mites (there are 2 sarcoptes and demodex) usually they only present a problem when the immune system is suppressed by other factors like poor nutrition etc. Most are species specific you don't find dog fleas on cats. Funny story: One year while deer hunting i came on a pond that had a skin of ice on it covered in snow. I could see tracks on the ice and went to have a look see. They were red fox tracks and there was an area where the ice was broke up along the shore a little more looking turned up coyote tracks leading to the spot and circling around the pond. Conclusion fox was being hunted by a coyote and the ice on the pond was thick enough to support the fox but not the yote. Question is was the fox that smart or that lucky? As the tracks left the pond in opposite directions.

There could be several reasons those pups were dead. One could be that there was an insufficient food supply for the mother and she abandoned them. They could have had fatal birth defects in which case momma would kill them just like a cat will do with kittens. It could have been a first litter for the bitch many times as a Vey Tech I've heard stories of dogs and cats abandoning a first litter in those cases usually owners take over momma's duties but coyotes have no such help. A large hawk may have knocked them off as they compete for the same food sources. There are a bunch of other things that could be the cause but without a necropsy (called autopsy in humans aut coming from the latin autus meaning self). I'd tell you what I've learned as a scientist about coyotes and their biology, habits, and preferred foods but my experience shows most hunters vehemently reject them. And insist they be eradicated which history shows is next to immpossible. Coyotes are noble animals man almost caused the extinction of wolves but their efforts at eradicating coyotes was and will continue to be a dismal failure. Population control on the other hand is possible and practical. One little tidbit I would share with you. when coyotes move into an area red fox (a non native species) populations drop like a stone but after a number of years the survivors the ones that learned to avoid coyotes repopulate. I can attest to this as in the last five years I'm catching increasing numbers of reds on the trap line. To the point over the last two years doubles and triples on reds have increased dramatically on my trap line. Even though i'm still catching the same number of coyotes. Grey fox populations (a native species) have a unique advantage from coyote predation. Anybody know what their secret is?

I shoot 250gr shockwave easyglides with three 777 pellets out of an Omega topped with the Nikon Omega BDC. From a rest I put one bullet on top of another at 100yds at 250yds I'm getting 3/4" groups using the last circle. Which is all fine and dandy for paper the proof is in the pudding. Hit a deer at 150yds looking past the smoke trying to see which way he went then heard the death rattle and knew I'd dropped him in his tracks. I tried Powerbelts and at 125yds didn't get a pass through bullet disintegrated. Chased that sucker half way to hell before we found him. Good thing there was four inches of new snow as we could follow his hoof prints very little hair and almost no blood. From the looks of the sign we thought he was gut shot and waited a good four hours before tracking when found he was hit just behind the foreleg in the sweet spot. I want a bullet that blows their lungs out the farside and the Powerbelts just weren't cutting it.
