Perhaps those states mandating B/O have done so to protect hunters from the distinct possibility of being accidentally shot. Statistics aside, why allow the scenario of insanity now and the possibility of serenity later (forever) for some unfortunate hunter who should have known better. We can argue forever concerning this subject, all I can say is "good luck" hunting and perhaps one day you may see me during gun season all decked out in orange! Be sure to wave, thanks! -

Perhaps there is a documented scenario where a hunter completely dressed in camo is wounded by another hunter despite all efforts by the shooter to identify his target and backdrop. If the hunter in the background was wearing some form of B/O the shooter would not have taken the shot. As you can imagine the shooter is in big trouble! Hopefully the wounded hunter is not killed and makes a full recovery. You can argue all you want but B/O saves lives! -

Nope, that's not true. I know of at least one case where there was no mis-identifying the target and there are probably more. In 2008, in Swan Lake there was a 16 month old baby girl shot to death in her grandparents living room. That same year, there was a near miss with a rifle bullet passing through a crib mattress that an infant had just been taken out of. That one was in the Town of Marshall. So it appears that the stats are a bit flawed. I don't think anyone is trying to say that blaze orange is like a suit if armor and will guarantee that slugs and bullets can't touch you. It is just a case of putting odds in your favor. Which to me sounds like a pretty good idea when we're talking about my life. Doc Doc, I am a firm believer in devices that have built in exponential safety factors. There is no doubt that hunters who choose to wear some form of blaze orange while hunting increase the safety factor when it comes to hunting. I would hate to imagine what the outcome would be if everyone gun hunted in camo. -

Deer Hunting and Deer Hunting Trends in New York State
wztirem replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
I searched the web to no avail looking for a more recent study (executive Summary) comparable to the one contained in the posted link. Interestingly, PA has numerous studies which one can refer to. Maybe the DEC references or relies upon the work of others to determine their deer management strategies in NY LOL. -
I am a lifelong fan. I held season tickets at Shea for nearly 20 years, giving them up after enduring four years of traffic hell and 4pm games at the Meadowlands. As far as "hard Knocks", I watched several minutes and turned it off having found the program not to my liking. In any event looking towards a successful Jets season, hoping that the hype does not get to their heads. As far as Revis goes, pay him the money or trade him. Football is such a bloodsport, the players are a commodity to the owners. There are few guaranteed contracts and the players when used up are discarded. Look what happened with Leon Washington.

OK, Meds have kicked in. Cutting DMP's by half is troubling in so much it indicates poor management practices on the part of the DEC. One would think that after all these years the biologists would only need to tweak the amount of allotted permits rather than make such drastic cuts in the number of permits to be issued. On the other hand was there an inordinate number of does/BB's killed last year(for various reasons)?

You forgot to mention that brighter minds posted in cubicles sitting in front of computers pouring over reams of data based upon sound scientific models make these decisions. Oops, sorry, time time take my anti-cynicism/sarcasm medication.

IMHO, you are not wearing enough orange! -
The DEC already shot themselves in the foot! Look at the sales of lifetime licenses prior to the increase. Their revenues are in decline! You are correct that the DEC will not do anything further (this year) that will cause a loss in revenue. It will be interesting to see what the revenue will be from license sales this year. Next year, who knows. It should interesting!

Perhaps the reduction of DMP's is a response to doe harvests with ML's. It would be worth a look to see the how many does have been killed over the past several years during the ML season.
