  1. I'm not picking on you, but if you spent the night drinking and were in the condition you just described , you most likely were under the influence when you where hunting in the morning ..

Your body can only get rid of one drink per hour , so going to bed at 2.00 am snickered and waking up at 6.00 am your still under the influence ,, ask me how I know I got a DWI when I was 20 driving home from a party the next morning for a brake light out ...

very true..........his condition as described would put him in the "under the influence" category.

  2.

    Thanks everyone!

Today I pumped some air in the bike tires and ripped down some of the park trails away from the crowds.

15 minutes after I got my feet on the ground, I found this busted rack in a flooded section of an orchard thicket.

Then I got cookin' to another area that I know always melts out sooner than the timber when I spotted another one in one of my favorite kinds of brush to look for antlers in!

    Can you see the antler...?

    ...and both of them together.

They aren't very pretty, but they gave me some motivation to find some new freshies!

I've given up counting dead deer this year. The good news is only one dead buck so far, but the doe/fawn count is now at least 35+

    Dead bucks- 1

    Dead doe/fawns- ??????

I see you found a can of cheap beer as well.........keep looking, the dead body of the poor guy who consumed it should be close.

  3. I use an owl hooter, an absolute must have in my book...........just to locate in the morning well before shooting light, just keep in mind, that like any other type of call, you can over do it.

  4. other than guys with young children, why do you think your spouse gets pissed when you go hunting? if it's a "just because" issue I would have a big problem with it.....my wife spends half the summer at the beach and goes to Broadway shows and concerts throughout the year, things I have zero interest in, but have no problem with her doing them, and I get the same time for hunting with no issue.

  5. I personally wouldn't waste money hooking an alarm to an alarm company unless it's reasonably priced, by the time it goes off and through all the channels, the thieves are usually long gone.........if you can find a good one that is audible and extremely loud with lighting features for nighttime, I would go that route.

  6. my daughter went to SUNY ESF in Syracuse, we live on Long Island, about a 5-6 hour drive, she recently moved to Colorado and is doing great. I'm actually happy she moved out of here and so is she........oh, and it's actually cheaper and quicker for us to fly her home to visit every 3-4 months than it was to drive to Syracuse and visit every few months.

  7. Wooly this deer was not hit by a car. One of the problems is with our county its a huge county and goes around the southern tip of Seneca Lake, so response time sucks. Also the Sheriffs dept is not the best in this County either. But after posting this picture on FB, it seems that a couple friends of mine have had the same thing happen on the next road over, and they seen a red vehicle with loud exhaust doing the same thing. So if they keep trying to do it, I think they will be caught as mosre people are on the look out now.

have they just been killing the deer and leaving them, or do they take them in the other cases?

  8. you would think Florida would be at the top, but they aren't because they have zero snowfall and the weather is very inviting............when I leave this state it certainly won't be to find better deer hunting.

  9. honestly, if you're looking to get some natural food that you can harvest at a decent price, take up fishing during the spring and summer....most of the animals that I consider worthy of eating can only be hunted in the winter and fall, except turkey...either way, have fun at whatever you decide to do.

  10. I only have my compound, I no longer shoot recurve, and haven't the need to get a crossbow (yet)..........but in my opinion a recurve / instinctive shooting is best for that type hunting.

  11. Not trying to drum up sympathy, Doc. Hate poachers. Was just throwing a one scenario to a comment that said there couldn't be one. I do know of people that  did it to feed their families. Was talked about a lot up around the Sacandaga Reservoir area and north. we would hear shots about every night when I worked a job down in backwoods WV too. Down there if it was done and the people doing it didn't run their mouths about it LEO's turned a blind eye.

Heck when we did a survey a few months back I was blown away that the majority of respondents were satisfied with current poaching laws and enforcement and didn't see a need for a change. I would have never bet on that result in a million years.

I wouldn't doubt that the courts go more lenient on hardship cases as opposed to the guy killing to chop the antlers off or just as an easy way to fill his tag.....

  12. I am in no way making excuses and I think this sucks. I have been around areas  of the state and country that this happens pretty frequently. sometimes hunger can be a big motivator. I think a job or another job is a better option. If we knew this guy worked two jobs and had 3 hungry little kids at home would our opinion change?

shooting that close to a house with people around? no, not at all...putting other people in danger only makes it worse.

  13. Those of you seeking them "Jesus" arrows are definitely on the right track. If you get your act together there, you will be richly blessed as I have been. "Jesus" bullets work good also. Check out the rifle season buck he blessed me with last Thanksgiving weekend, right after I said a little prayer to just see a buck. That one was a long shot also (about 350 yards from what I can tell from Google maps). He dropped right in his tracks after taking a 150 gr Federal Classic into the rib cage. Not the biggest rack, but the largest bodied buck I have ever taken by a good margin. I estimate the dressed weight at about 240 lbs, since I could lift my own 200 lbs off the ground while only bringing his front end up on the other end of the rope and pulley.

As far as the anti-crossbow bow-hunters go, just try looking at the bright side. No one is even talking about taking regular bows away, and you will certainly be able to continue using then if you wish. A few more hunters in the woods might actually be a good thing in the long run if we hope to continue our hunting tradition in NY. If you loose a little strength due to injury or old age, you will still be able to participate in archery season. Lots less "practice-time" is needed with a crossbow, and time gets valuable as you get older and start families, buy homes, etc..

To those who feel obligated to ridicule my own shot choices whether it be too far or too small a deer, etc., I do appreciate your advice and will take it into consideration. I wish you the best of luck in your own future hunts and I encourage you to read the all-time best seller which contains the best advice you will find in any pursuit. Keep the advice coming.
