  1. in my opinion, if you take the calling, gobbling, strutting and the whole show out of spring turkey hunting, you pretty much took all the excitement out of it and are just out there to kill something..............don't get me wrong, if I happened to have an opportunity to kill one by chance that involves none of that I'll take it, but that would never be my intended method of hunting. I would hate to accidentally "intercept" one that another hunter has been working and ruin his hunt or have that happen to me............if your both out there and just using calling and setup skills to see who brings the bird in, different story, but to drive past and jump out and go after it is not for me.................and I realize that many have access to huge pieces of land, so that's a non issue.

  2. I cant help with a semi auto.I use a 870 Supermag.I can tell you that I wish I paid more attention before I bought mine and I probably would have went with a 20.A lot of people on Oldgobbler.com are getting awesome patterns and knocking down birds past 40 yards with 20's.Most are shooting federals HW #7's.Just my 2 cents on that. For a semi I have 4 friends that run 3 1/2 inch guns. One has a Benelli SBE2,one has a mossberg 935 and 3 have Stoeger 3500.All like them and all get used pretty well. The one that's amazed me(basically because I know how the guy treats his equipment) is one of the stoegers.Feeds anything you throw at it.He uses it for waterfowl and shoots cases a year between that and trap.

I patterned my son's 20 gauge 870 with 3" Hevi Shot Magnum Blend alongside my Benelli 12 gauge Super Vinci with 3.5" of the same........at 35 yards if you trimmed away all the pattern on the target and just kept the part showing the Turkey's head, you would have a tough time picking which is which..............and back to the original question, I've heard nothing but good about the Versa Max.

  3. I think if you hunt wide open areas where the birds can really look around and see that there is no hen where the calls are coming from, then they can help quite a bit..........I've had success bringing in henned up Tom's when using them, mainly because they seemed to bring the hens in and the Tom's followed.

  4. at this point you should be scouting more with your ears than anything else..........I really caution against trying to follow and track them to where they roost, like someone mentioned, if you can see them, there's a 99% chance they know you are there....and I definitely would not be setting up and using turkey calls to bring them or locate them at this point............stick with owl or crow calls.

  5. Did you read any of the links I posted? Have you looked into who is really running and behind this organization?

if I had researched it, I would not have presented my comment as a question...........either way, I can fully understand how something like Sandy Hook would motivate people who were directly affected by it or affected by it through some other type of association.

  6. On her pre-dawn walk, my wife was chased - yes chased - by a skunk. She isn't very fast, but fortunately faster than a skunk. She made a couple of 90 degree turns to make sure it was chasing her. It broke off the chase after about 100 yards.

This was my opportunity to hunt dangerous game. I figured this would be my only chance to experience the adrenaline rush that comes from being charged by a cape buffalo or lion. I stalked around the whole area where the skunk chase took place. I was totally focused - at least as focused as I can be at this point in my life - waiting every moment for the attack to come. The skunk never showed. Either it left, went to ground, or knew it was no match for me.

aren't skunks one of the top carriers of rabies? maybe that explains it's behavior.............

  7. Fortunately, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, provided us with a large, "gift" buck from a friend during archery season, one on a silver platter for me and my crossbow, and another "giant" of a buck for me, right after I asked him for one during gun season. Then he threw in a fine young "road-kill" button-buck from some "hit-and-run" driver, right at the end of our driveway, on the last day of ML season.

you never cease to amuse me...you should take your comedy act on the road.

  8. here's a question for some who may or may not want to answer......suppose you're a parent of a child who is slaughtered like one of the children at Sandy Hook, by a person, who according to many, should be allowed to have a gun because we shouldn't keep tabs on wackos...and was provided guns by a parent who knew he was a full blown wackjob and made no effort to keep the guns locked away from him.....do you still stand up and say it's ok and nothing needs to be done and there should be no consequences for irresponsible gun ownership?

  9. Just like saying he is a POS. No one I read said to take his right. But supporting a group set on taking a right should be called out. That is more action than speech. To me it is right up with sending money to terrorists.

fair enough....but like I say, if someone is stupid and uninformed enough to leave a gun around that can fall into the hands of a child or someone who is mentally unstable and they kill themselves or another then too bad, they can live with their mistake because gun owners should never have to answer to why they own guns or what may happen due to their irresponsible ownership of them...it should be a free for all.

  10. I don't see how that would be of use in a hunting situation?? it's not like a flashlight, if you were looking for something that throws off heat it would help, but as far as I know it does not illuminate the area.

  11. I patterned some 3.5" #5 Winchester Longbeards along with some 3.5" Hevi Shot Magnum Blends out of my Benelli 12gauge with factory full choke yesterday @ 35-40 yards..... although both patterned well, for the money I'll be using the Winchesters for now on.....my son's 870 20 gauge patterned just as well as the 12 with the Hevi Shot 3" Magnum Blends, I was impressed to say the least

  12. are you vacuum sealing it? from my experience there will usually be a lot of liquid in the bag when you defrost vacuum sealed meat, I guess the sealing somehow draws the liquid out of the meat, but I've never had a problem with the meat itself retaining too much liquid................I usually cut a hole in the bottom of the bag and put it in a colander to let it drain as it defrosts.

  13. Lawdwaz yes I am apologies for the confusion. I am grounding my own venison and casing it myself. It was retaining a ton of blood causing the casing to become mushy and chewy and I was packing them pretty full.

are you using natural or synthetic casing?
