  1. Thanks guys that's what I was hoping for. Still little worried was pretty warm here last night. I'll get him skinned out and se what we can salvage
  2. Shot decent buck last night had to let him lay coyote got into butt hole not real bad. What does everyone recommend Disregard meat all together or cut around bad area?
  3. After a long bow season with several good encounters but no back straps. I was happy to take this guy with a gun. Dec 8th is cutting it a little too close for my liking. Believe it or not this guy was dogging a doe hard. We have so many does in my area (4O) that not all get breed the first go round. 28 days later it starts to heat up again. I guess that is one benefit of having a buck to doe ratio of about 1:20. Put a pretty good shot on him @ about 150yrds. Knew he was hit good but he was running pretty hard across open field so sent another one at him took out his right front leg. tumbled him and there he laid. Saved my doe permit for muzzleloader so will be back at it this weekend. Thank you to everyone who posted I really enjoy reading all the stories. Helps me get though the work week and motivated to get up and get to the stand on those cold mornings..
  4. Welcome, I'm from the Albany area as well. Know Gilboa well still do some bow hunting on 443 near the dam. Tough place to hunt. Keep at it and good luck.
  5. I live to bow hunt. Its the only thing I can think of that you could do for 3yrs before the big payoff. I missed several deer before I finally got it done. I still about shake out of the tree when I see a nice one. Any deer with a bow is a throphy in my book and a nice buck like this is the cherry on top of a sundae. Congrats!! now go whack a doe.
  6. below is a great article from charlie alsheimer. This is pretty compleling stuff. But it dont mean crap if the weather ain't right. http://charliealsheimer.com/ca/moon.html
  7. Thanks for the info guys. Incam I was also selected for the jan. shotgun season. And you are correct this year only have to harvest 1 doe before getting buck tag. Problem is the bow hunt is only 1 day DEC14. Thanks again for all the posts.
  8. I applied and my number was drawen for a chance to bow hunt at the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley NY.(long Island) I was wondering if anyone had ever hunted there or even been there. It will be kind of a challange for me as they are giving you 1 day from 9am to 4pm to scout the area I was selected for. They must have a good number of deer as the hunt is only 2 days and you have to kill two doe before they will give you a buck tag. Any info at all would be much appricated.
  9. great buck!!! for NY that is a giant oct 1 is right around the corner good luck
  10. My favorite trail cam pic so far..... My 6 month old daughter helping dad check trail cams.
  11. I have used several different kinds. I prefer the Firenocks. They are a little pricy but not any more than the lumanocks. You can get a 3 pack from their website for $25.http://shop.firenock.com/Lightning-Nock-L3-G-Series-Standard-Hunting-3-pack-bare-FNLN99.htm I would strongly advise staying away from any nock that requires a magnet to turn on or off. Just another piece that could fail.
  12. Even if you have your own management plan in place this will help. Bucks will travel a long ways looking for love. New York’s biggest problem is the doe to buck ratio is way out of wack. The rut here is very weak compared to other parts of the country. The more bucks the more competition for breeding. This means the big boys will have to travel farther to find a doe in estrus.(Better chance to see a mature deer during daylight) This will also help insure the majority of does get breed in their first cycle. Which in turns leads to earlier births for fawns. a fawn born to a mother breed in her 2nd cycle 28 days after first is at a huge disadvantage.
  13. You think this chubby little kid on his bike has any idea the drama he has created. I bet he would get a kick out of it.
  14. will be 3.5 come hunting season long neck straight back not much belly. Great buck would like to see him hard horned.
