I've also camped in Mongaup and we had a few bear sightings in the campground that weekend. Couln't really give any insight on hunting though. good luck!

I might be wrong, but I believe that QDMA says that its best to take a mature doe early. It has nothing to do with the rut, but instead for competing with food source as it gets later in the year. I know it really depends on your hunting location/deer population and hunting goals. that being said I also agree with Phade that in the end the difference is probably minute.

Longer distances, 30+ Its nice because you have time to watch the arrow travel, but for the shorter shots my problem was I found myself trying to watch the light after the letoff and would end up pulling my shot to the left, missed two deer that way, including a nice 6 pt. Now I rather wait to hear that 'swack'.

dang it, thats probably the best answer...should have thought of that.

Assuming Pre Rut 1. Dont shoot the does because they bring in the big boys during the rut. 2. Shooting a doe or two will increase the competetive nature between Bucks by reducing the availability of females. no looking for a right answer, just starting a discussion. I've been told both. whats your advice?

A few years back a friend of mine knew I love the outdoors so he invited me to join his church youth group on a overnight hiking/camping trip. We parked at a trail head in the catskills and the plan was to hike about 4 miles to the camping spot, camp overnight and head back. The youths were ages 8-16 or so and all from the queens/brooklyn boro. It was the first time for many of them have been in the woods. it was quite interesting to hear their comments about fear of bugs or bears and getting lost or killed by wandering criminals in the woods lol. Most shocking experience was how many of them, when told to bring food for the hike, actually brought food in cans. I dont know how they expected to cook the food, but i felt bad for some of them having to hike 4 miles, mostly uphill with about 16 lbs of canned beans and corn, lol. overall the experience was great for them, especially sitting around the campfire at night.

Depending on date and location, I'm in.

Man, I guess I don’t feel so bad, bunch a dummies on here lol. Just kidding!! Oct 1, last week, for some reason I decide to hang my hat on the top cam of my bow to adjust my face mask. Sure enough I forget its there until a doe comes walking in to my right. I grab my bow as I’m staring at the doe and when I swing the bow around to get in position to shoot, I see my hat hanging there. I was able to quickly grab it and put it on my head but that split second the deer walked behind some shrubs. No shot. I’ve also tied my coats arms around my treestand armrest only to have it fall to the ground after a 15 ft climb, man you feel like an idiot having to climb back down and get it. But the worst thing I did was drive two hours to hunt with someone who invited me to hunt his property in late season, only to realize you packed your warm season boots. I was only able to sit for 3 hours before I couldn’t feel my toes. If I didn’t think you guys would judge me I’d tell you I literally cried driving all the way home, but I didn’t……

like I said, probably a form issue. Proline does a good job, it its recently tuned then it may not be the bow. take a smartphone and have someone record you shooting from a few angles. if your comfortable maybe post it up, someone would probably be better able to help then. if not take it back to Proline and have them watch you shoot.
-
asked someone to record you from each side and behind you. maybe watching it will show you a form mistake. did you have the bow setup at a good shop?
-
So for those that upgrade every year, is the attraction the new and best technology? I only have 4 deer on my bow so its still young as far as i'm concerned lol. and im not knocking those that upgraded, because if i could, i would also.

So from time to time I like to go on Archerytalk’s forum and read their bowhunting threads. I regularly read and see guys own multiple $800+ bows setups and or buying a new bow every year and selling the old one. It’s amazing to see how active the classifieds section is! So, is this a realistic representation of the bowhunting community? Because I’m starting to feel a little self conscious that this will be my 6th season with the same bow….

As someone stated earlier, Blue Mountain in Westchester gives you the opportunity to shoot out to 50. Also you could do the 3D range which has many shots out to that. Be forewarned, the range is in real bad shape, targets suck and you run the risk of damaging your arrows. I was there last sunday, but the good news is their only charging half price, $8, as a result. its worth it. BTW, fellow Queens hunter, proline is decent but they can get a bit packed. I haven't been to Queens Archery, do you recommend?

you got to figure a way to get her involved. Funny story about my wife. I decided to book a half day pheasant hunt to break in a new bird barrel and choke for my Mossberg 500. Wife came along and the plan was for me to hunt the a.m. then the afternoon we would go pick apples at a nearby farm. Wife planned to wait in the car but when we got to the farm to pheasant hunt, the farmer says “why don’t you come along, you can help carry birds”. Being a sweet girl she was like ok. He gives her this huge XL orange vest and told her to walk 5 yards behind us as we followed the two setters working the field. When the dogs would bring back the bird, the farmer would grab it, spin their neck and shove it in the back pocket of her vest, sometimes with wings still flapping. By the end I shot 7 pheasants and I will never forget how she looked! The pockets of the vest were stuffed with 5 bleeding pheasants. Her hair was a mess, plus it had rained the night before and her sneakers and pant bottoms were covered with mud from slipping all around following us. Plus the look of horror on her faces from seeing the dead birds!!! She was miserable!! I tipped that farmer very good that day! Good news was she enjoyed the experience overall and loved watching the dogs do their thing, which I agree is amazing!

I married a city girl. It was tough at first. She didn’t like guns and couldn't understand that someone would need more than one. Then she didn't see why would someone would want to kill a cute animal. But after the many days I’d get back from hunting she would say "did you get one”, and when I would she would be happy for me and knew the effort I put in. Now 5 years later it’s just a routine. she knows hunting season's coming up. Brags to her family when I harvest something and loves cooking different venison recipes. Just stay passionate Borngeechee, hopefully she'll come around.

Bow mounts for ATV/UTV
vincy replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in ATV's , UTV's, Dirtbikes & Snowmobiles
not setup the way you described but i have ATV Tek VFGH V-Grip Rider for the handlebar. its secure and protects the bow. I will note that although these were made for ATV's I use it on my mountain bike to get deep in public land. -
hey vince1, not a fruit. its called a Gall. in your case a red oak gall, pictured below. its a type of insect parasite, casued by wasps. it causes little to no harm to the tree however.

just the shanks...always leftover shanks.

for those that are using sticks and a hang on, can you recommend brands, or share what your using specifically? I have the Summit VIper, love it, but open to another option.

Thanks for all the answers so far, will be looking into these places for the next year. Do you find some parts of NYS more accepting of 'flatlanders' over others? lol
