For my NYC / Long Island forum members, here is a hypothetical question for you. If you were given a budget of 100K to purchase hunting land in NYS, what region would you focus your search? Now here are some factors to consider. You live in NYC so the closer the property the more chances to visit Doe permits availability Good deer density Access to public hunting land because 100k won’t buy you a ton. Primary game is Whitetail Other year round use ie. Camping, hiking etc.. I know there will be pros and cons with this. For instance region 3 is under a 2-3 hr drive, but deer density is lower, it has AR and gets hit hard by other NYC hunters. I’m interested to hear your answers because every year I keep telling myself that I should buy land. thanks Vincy

Thanks dbHunterNY. Really appreciate you sending these. I called the park I hunt, but they only allow shooting during the season. Meh
-
Yea, I think thats a safe distance to any major road.
-
What do you consider near?

Yea, after looking at the Rhineheart, it looks cool but think i'd prefer a block. to many variables to damage arrows with a Rhineheart. thanks
-
Thanks for the advice guys. i appreciate it. I'll look into the Rhinehart and call the park.

Hey guys, two part question. With the seaon coming up I'm ramping up my scounting. As I was daydreaming about hunting at work yesterday a thought came to mind. Is it allowed in state parks or public land to find a quiet area, off a trail, put down a block target and practice a few shots? nothing would be greater than after exiting the woods from scounting to shoot 20 or so arrows at various yardage before driving home. Im just not sure of the legalities. any info? second question, does anyone recommend a good quality block target that is portable? thanks, Vincy

Concealed Carry USA class for Utah recip. permit
vincy replied to Fletch's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Im sorry I didn't understand your question. Turkeyfeathers is correct. actually half the course is them walking you through completing the paper work to ensure zero mistakes. the place that I took the class even provided the envelopes and mailed it for us the next day. THey did our fingerprinting, picture and mailing. just show up with a pen. -
Concealed Carry USA class for Utah recip. permit
vincy replied to Fletch's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
If you mean, they tell you how to conceal carry, then no. That will be specific to everyone's body type, philosphy of carry and gun. however again, the class is what you make it. the more people to ask question and comment the more dialogue was generated. Keep in mind that 90% of the class probably never carried before, so its all opinion. the curriculum of the class it to learn what Utah requires for CCW permit holders. they inlcude a CD that gives you the law to all 50 states, keep in mind that law will change and it is your responsibility to know. and gives you other resources that will help you. -
Concealed Carry USA class for Utah recip. permit
vincy replied to Fletch's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I took the Utah Non-residend CCW class March 9th in NJ. I have not received the permit yet, however I believe turn around time takes close to 60 days. Class was 4 hrs, learning Utah's law regarding concealed carry. the class is what you make it, therefore more questions asked by the class the more discussion. Utah does not require a gun proficency class like Florida does. Florida requires you to take a firearm training class, although all you have to show is your hunting license and you will qualify. If not you can take the NRA course. the Utah allows CCW in 31 states I believe. Florida gives you and additional 2 states, Florida doesn't allow you PA, Utah does. hope this helps. FYI, my cost was $200. not the cheapest but oh well. -
I work and live in the city. I do not come from a family that hunts. I dont own my own land or know anyone that owns land. However I've taken at least one deer every year for the past three years including this. All public land deer I might add. a good season is the opportunity to get out a decent amount, for me thats at minimum 10+ days, and seeing deer with at least a few shot opportunities. a great season is more than 1 deer or possibly a buck a outstanding season is a mature public land buck...yet to happen, lol.

This post was exactly what I was thinking about this morning. Thank you for the info, happy thanksgiving.

The smallest acreage you would buy to hunt deer?
vincy replied to New York Hillbilly's topic in Deer Hunting
This is a interesting thread for me because i have plans/dreams of one day owning my own cabin and land to enjoy and hunt. The information has been great so far. i've been browsing the listings for the last year or so and it seems only a few "good" properties come on the market a year, even though alot will say "good hunting", "hunt your own property" etc... not easy to find in NYS. -
Make sure you have your DEP Access permits.

i've had success in spot 6, but you have to go deep. also in my experience it has been good in the p.m. all the deer i've seen and shot were inside of 45 min right before it gets dark. Good luck

I work in real estate for a bank, mostly large development, retail/industrial/rental stuff etc..but the concepts apply across the board. there is definitely a lot of money that can be made in RE, however it takes knowledge of your market and is not without risk. RE has a low barrier to entry, in other words anyone can speculate and buy RE and call themselves an investor. However to be really successful it takes understanding your market and indicators that can influence a return on your investment this comes from research and knowing what your goals are. Luck also can play into this. My thing is generating cash flow. for land you need to think about how you can generate income, by either leasing, annual timber sales etc...lowering your carrying costs should be your main focus. If your young, take this opportunity to study your markets, cycles and know what your investment goals are.

I always carry "you never know" arrows, ie..pesky squirrel or wandering coyote. therefore I have a quiver attached to the bow. Never had a problem with snags either. also i've had second shot opportunites on deer.

Got to my spot opening day to see two flashlights in the distance setting up where I had planned to be. lol. Ended up on my plan B but didn't see anything. Sunday saw two does 75 yards behind me moving fast about 30 min before sun down. Still alot of hikers throughout the day. worst part is all the dogs off leash (not allowed) had boston terrier run under my stand. Sorry, forgot to add, Fahnestock State Park.

Thanks TeeBugg, interestingly enough the water is close to the bedding area. Morning was cooler than I thought, however midday heat was to warm. Heading back out tomorrow.

I hunt public land, on my way to the spot I scouted this summer and saw the lights of two hunters getting setup. Didn't have backup. I setup finally on a nice tree, however didn't see anything. Got down at 10ish and decided to scout the immediate area. Great sign, intersecting trails all over leading to stream and their bedding area. Found coyote tracts also, everything fresh. I think this was the area that my initial spot leads to. But no show by any deer. What are your thoughts on how close to bedding area you should hunt?

Funny thread... I forgot my belt, lol. I usually put on my hunting gear right before I head in the woods, today I drove with sweat pants and forgot a belt. Not cool walking to your tree with bow in one hand and holding your pants up with the other.

Free Treestand Safety Harnesses
vincy replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
I'd be interested and appreciate a saftey harness. Made the mistake of wearing my warm weather gear and cutting the straps on the legs to short on mine two years ago. It wasn't until I got my winter gear on that I realized they were to short. I'm in Queens, but would pay for anyones shipping. thanks -
Jim, nice thread idea as I have always wondered that also. Since I dont have my own land to hunt I've dreamed of having my own acearge and cabin to get away from the city, to hunt and enjoy. Actually been looking for a couple of years but haven't pulled the trigger. Cant seem to find what I want.

I posted a few weeks ago when I joined that I still hadn't gotten a NY deer since moving from MI, well after three years of NY hunting shot this Long Island public land doe last night. 30 yard shot, 30 yard recovery. Shes a young doe, but she will be tasty in time for Thanksgiving! Now the pressures off. lol
