My new phone arrives tomorrow...I have been trying to figure out ways not to loose it...rarely using it last time didn't work....I freely admit I'm a loner, always have been. That said I'm a loner with great people skills. Ya, ya not on the web,but person to person, people actually seek me out. I'll never understand that...took me half a day to hit 4 stores the day before yesterday...I need to learn to be rude like most other people ...lol perhaps it's because I walk upright, head up and I have no fear of eye contact nor smiling. I've had strangers literally make a be line to me to start a conversation... it was tomatoes, then another telling me kids jokes, another all about their grand kids and then the prices of various chicken cuts and how the world has changed. My family refuses to shop with me any more..lol So I am not looking forward to getting it activated...I need a case with a neck chain...though then I'd probably end up with lung or breast cancer from the battery...

Papist your right..and I have that covered as well.

As a person that got the flu and walking pneumonia on a regular basis yes I got a flu shot...I don't know for sure..but could probably find out, once you have had the flu your prone to be revisited. Now that said, I do know that once you have had walking pneumonia your prone to having it again. I've had problems from a very young age with such infections born to a smoker, lived in a house of smokers then became a bar tender(like smoking a pack a night back then)...lung issues are nothing to fool with so better safe than sorry for I was hospitalized twice not being able to breath...once at 9 and then when the kids were little. I collapsed in the Dr.'s office and he called the ambulance when I turned blue. Better safe than sorry

This sums it up for me in a nut shell, read the quote ,then read the reality...people believe what they see on their phones their computers and tablets as the truth. Though a brilliant observation ,back when it was said the originator knew that an Eisenstein tag would be it's best courier. http://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/03/19/tech-surpass/ Technology is great, but it has become a monster gobbling up the worlds intellect. For those ready to jump on this observation, read the following ,then stop and think about whats happening around the world or just this past election.

I worked in the wood lot for 7 hours today as I was dragging myself home...I heard a hen talking...So I stopped and answered...we talked a bit and then she wondered off in the direction of where I'd been working...The leaf cover was all torn up there so she probably went to check it out. What a nice way rto end one's the day...Nice to see they are returning to that particular area again. Makes my soreness less bothersome.

Sorry you saw it that way. I did 3 distinct paragraphs, out lining and giving 3 distinct observation and reasons for different deer movements and signs to look for as to feeding, bedding and health. Thus the group bedding, seed dispersal and dung observations. I assumed others could constructively touch on and add to any or all 3 to get a discussion going. You honed in on the mention of the hunting groups changing patterns. This I mentioned because state land hunter have to deal with this on a regular basis. Us land owners sometimes do as well. But knowing what your seeing and wind direction ,lay of land can allow compensations. Such things can and do Chang patterns. Perhaps I was wrong in my assumption ,wasting mine and your time.

Started the big project yesterday...

So I thought Id add a bit before heading out...winds have calmed so it's safer...I went around the brush pile fence lines and the areas of ground clutter I am doing to find this: Deer hugging the fence lines in their travels...literally and using the fence line openings a lot. This lets me know they are training them selves to quick escape routes through cover, good thing to know. The grounds I have cleared are being used...especially the upper woods area that will run along the new trail plot I'm putting in. I have a lot of work to do on this...still several dead ash and maple to down and curved ash and maple that aren't good for anything but fire wood...they curve over the lane way shading it. I'll be cutting a bunch of those today...I spend good days dropping trees . Bad days cutting tops and sectioning to move. I need to do this before raking off the moss and raking in the lime. I will add new lime, 3 bags at a time on good days...I also need to clean out a drainage culvert I added a few years ago with the backhoe...this will be done by hand. ...it was installed to keep the bigger plot at the end of this trail from having seed washed down yet another connecting trail...50 acres of my neighbors land drains and flows through our place to the gully...actually their place is why we have a gully.. no complaints gullies make for GREAT hunting. Well I'm off to get er done... -

Ya....that's a bit gaudy for my taste...lol -
I read a post that alluded to little interest in woodsmanship. Now I know there is an interest and many here are great woodsman. I only wish I could have Woody's skill. You just have to read through and remember posts. We've all discussed at one point or another reading winter sign is great, but can be a world away from spring ,as to summer and fall. Patterns change with feed, cover and breeding needs. That's not to say going out now and finding those late rubs and heavy trails, nipped off branches and counting beds and sizes isn't valuable. That such thing can't tell you if and how the deer herds have changed. This year I have had a change in movement patterns. Now when it first occurred it was right at hunting. Nothing to be done then because factors out of my control caused this and at a critical time. This change clearly showed up in my winter hikes. I found totally new rub areas and all winter tracks changed..some not to far from old ones. This may not seem like a big deal..but as those tracks continue it becomes one. Bedding changed and feed patterns as well. This had me looking at what I knew and didn't know as to why. I already knew two new hunting groups showed last year. I found one stand that is positioned as to blow their sent correctly across a major run and bedding area. I don't know how or when accessed ,but all ways visible, blow scent into that and the feeding/bedding field from entrance to stand..unless used in a east south east wind. The other change from another group is yet unclear. This will continue to change patterns through out the year as that groups activity increases. Natural changes such as big down falls and water access, drought, Chang habitat and movement. That's one thing, beds sizes numbers and urine. I know where fawns have grouped and bedded and numbers in the group. Frequency of an area lets me surmise if this will stay as a home range. Same with doe/ fawn bedding. Though I will add spring summer sightings to it as time goes on. Single buck beds and size. Ones where they have urinated tells me buck as well as size...foot directions coming to and leaving..I always back track. Then look during the spring and summer with binos to see if it's a resident with that home range. Seed dispersal some tend to over look this. I do not,I know where and when plants will emerge and how long they will be viable. I know every favored wild plant out there for deer and Turkey. When there is a new flush of a certain plant to an area I know this to be a stomping ground for either or both. When I see swaths of a new plant going through the spring woods I have a new travel pattern harboured during a time after fruiting started. One particular great plant for this is May Apple's. A few others being ,elderberry, goose berry/currents,poison ivy and brambles. Some plant seeds need to go through mammal digestive tracts ,others Bird for germination. Which brings us to other shite to consider Where, color, moisture, density, shape for both deer and Turkey can tell you much. I'll stop for you guys to chime in ...

BTW. ...if the sides are aluminum..not sure scrap price right now,you have potential siding for a tower blind and roofing...cut and spray paint..free material to fully enclose ..as I recall older trailers had smaller Windows...So possible Windows as well...as you age,the idea of comfort in nasty weather, when the buck are up moving will appeal to you. Being dry when the turkey are out gobbling will make for a fun hunt...believe me This is where you insert a buddy to help,if he hunts and would like to stay dry and not frozen as well.I know how cold and windy it can be there. -
Shrubs for food plot
growalot replied to sailinghudson25's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Plan on wrapping those cedar? Because they need protection from deer, both as food but favored buck rubbing....try aronia ,hazel nuts, blue berries. Low growing crab apple and trimmed mulberries, semi dwarf fruit trees can act as shrubs. Then in wet areas you can go with certain shrubbery willows. Even single bush big hip roses...deer love rose leaf, young branches chew and hips in winter. Just read carefully when choosing those. Bush cherries..I have grown all of these BTW. I just plant Goji berries for them this past year. They need support get 10ft high and the 18"whips I planted in June had fruit in Sept! Nothing better than a black berry patch. Elderberry....won't grow thick. But deer love them . Do some research on fruiting bushes.kousa dog wood. PS..if your planting for the critter..look at the nutrient value on what you plant. Some are good protein other vitamins, potassium, carbs. Even help with intestinal parasites and disease. Covers are great, but make your time and money work to it's fullest benefit, now's the time to read. -
Wegmen's pesto feta spinach chicken sausage, tossed salad, baked potato, collard greens.

Looks to me like that right shoulder muscle is messed up(compare to other deer)..and he's toeing out on the front right hoof. Though that could just look that way due to the light coloring on that leg. NICE deer though.

On Kindle so I can't link but it is Walnut Creek seeds,Carroll Ohio... -
That has something no one else around you has...It's never too late to plant to attract the critters if you have the land...I'm talking trees here and shrubs..Persimmons. yep they'll tell you " oh they'll grow ,but you won't get fruit..." Don't believe every thing you hear...I was told I'd never get Kiwi's ,persimmon, peaches to grow and fruit here...guess what?...they have cultivars being introduced all the time... Meader,Praire star, sun, dawn all rated zone 4 and earlier producing trees that start fruiting earlier(2-3yrs) and are self fertile. They have new mulberry cultivars bigger fruit longer season(2yrs) for zone 5...ect..ect..Apples are a dime a dozen how many guys around you grow the uncommon sought out fruit deer love? Not to mention oaks ,chestnuts and hazel or wht. walnuts....Don't limit yourself...some day you may not have time, cash or ability to plant a plot or two....which could be fine ...if you planned ahead of time....

We still have a good amount of snow cover...They are hitting the bunch grasses and fern. Digging wild rye and clovers

You have leafy wooded areas now?

Everything everyone else said and let's hope that's it for any more major problems this year.
