I agree...don't really like them but as the above statement and good luck....might want to make sure you have all ducks in a row well in advance to preserve the meat....We use old refrigerators with shelves taken out....coolers with lots of frozen milk jugs(no water that way)...and line up ppl that like and will use the meat....

There ya go ...lack of available land to hunt....Try looking at the land that is for sale ...farms going under....farmers selling off chunks....That is not a problem....the problem is ppl not wanting to do the sacrifice...I have to wonder...while they are complaining are they standing in the yard of a nice big house with a big new pick up and car in the drive....have they just gotten back from vacation ....is there a boat or motor cycle...4 wheeler in the garage? Please it's their choices plane and simple...they want a place to hunt PRETTY MUCH handed to them....we have guys that hunt camp...never see them all year then all of a sudden the end of summer comes and the calls begin..."How ya doing buddy?"...not all are like that ...but it happens a lot....So do I feel sorry for them....NO....I have land because I drive a car that cost $200.00....I went from a 2400sqr ft home and garden place to and old converted hunting camp as my house....do I regret it..... no...those were my choices...in order to have a descent piece of land....Why...because I did look to the future and what I saw was condos being built out in the middle of no where...the beautiful village of Geneseo ...looking like Henrietta...large tracts of land being put into 5 acre parcels...Thanks Kraft Reality > ...So don't whine unless your willing to do something to help your self -

That would be a cold day in Hell......I believe I can speak for many...many land owners on that one....We didn't bust our humps and sacrifice and aren't paying high taxes for someone else to use our property....Seriously?! ??? -

So where did you read that...for what I said and I believe I MAY have been the only one to bring it up ...is it would be unsafe to have gun hunters ( in experienced at that).... in the woods with camo clad bow hunters and there should be MANDATORY orange Then here is another thing to consider...the bow hunter that shoots a "trophy Buck....to have it run into the path of a Muzzle loader hunter and shot before it gets a chance to expire from the arrow....Ooohhh not seeing any problems with that for an early ML hunt during bow season : -
I actually used cardboard for the roof as well....I cut it to over hang 6 in. on all sides....then made an envelope out of tarp and taped up the sides....Here's where I goofed on design...ONLY..... in that I never made the roof pitch at all...so to remedy that I add pieces of wood to the center brace of roof....lifting it up in the middle......so rain and snow would run off....the next one will have a single 2in drop on one side...the roof never leaked but the over hangs got damp and drooped...so this spring I just took scrap L shaped metal corner molding and nailed it under the drooping over hangs...now they are right as rain......I actually have a clothe covered swivel office chair in it....it doesn't even get damp from general air moisture...I have to say I'm even surprised this idea worked so well

Congrats!...I finally got the rest of the soybeans in and the feed corn I use for cover ...The top soybean sorghum plot has broken ground and is growing good...may be a tad heavy in the sorghum test plot...The seed is so small...easy to over do with the hand spreader...sure birds and deer will remedy that error I have another plot to finish discing for a tad more feed corn cover and then I will slowly work at keeping the fall plots weed free...spray down and a once a week discing...then turnips in some and winter wheat nurse crop for clover in others.....

Thanks Doc -
It was in to Docs above statement...I hate these quote boxes....any how.....It's also to my concern of safety which by now most of you should have a clear understanding of and why... Yes they are close ...I group the stands a couple hundred feet apart to play the wind..also if I'm busted in one stand...the deer won't change their movement by much so I can usually go to one of the others and they will walk by not noticing me but still looking to see if I'm in the other stand....blinds are positioned on the way to stands should deer be between me and my destination The pic was to show that even in June I have deer looking up at stands...why...well everybody here bow and gun hunts out of stands and this is a very high pressure area...that stand ...was never hunted out of last year....yet there she is looking at it
-
Doc.............. it has to start with this....neighbor hoods where parents let the kids get together for a good ole fashion game of Kick the can....hide and seek...kickball....soft ball...touch football...when I grew up that's what we all did...certain parents set out and talked and listened....but left us to just have fun....We didn't know it then but these activities taught us all alot....moms would gather us up and we'd hike to the Cansaraga Creek to swim...or hike to Stoney brook park........we'd take hay rides to Poags Hole and have camp fires....They'd even get a caravan of cars with us kids all loaded up in our PJ's and drive into the hills and park away from all the town lights to "look for flying saucers"...remember that craze?....but it was just to spark our interest and imaginations...We'd sit on the back stoop and skin squirrels and rabbits....all these things were interconnected in sparking every bodies interest in hunting and fishing....but alas ...I fear those days are long gonefor kids and it's too bad.
-
Sorry ...I don't care about the youth hunt as long as they have MANDATORY orange for all gun hunters...I do think that ML in the middle of bow season is foolish and as Doc says unless you hunt in a high pressure area.... The following pic is a good example...I am up to 28 stands and blinds on 72 acres....rarely do I hunt my stands more than 2x's a season...that being said...look at the date of this pic.....in the Lft hand corner out of sight....is a stand

I did not mean in the youth season but there have been many in the general turkey season...so I misspoke ......That is just exactly what they are proposing isn't it?....did they say they were shutting down bow season during that 3 day weekend?....... I really feel sorry for the ppl that own hunting camps and pay big taxes on them ...but can't get time off to hunt only during regular season....because you can bet the farm..... that by the time they get a chance to use their own property ...it would have already been run over with locals That's not speculation ...it's observation ....happens to us during turkey season and bow season...I have to drive ppl off all the time and our neighbors down there are about fed up...and I've talked to many many guys that have the same problems....it's happened here at the house...when we've purchased land from out of staters....guys around here just treated it like there own....local know absentee land owners routines ...I dare say better than their own : -

Of course it's NOT the same thing....the youth turkey occurs at a time when there are no other seasons open and you still have ppl out there shooting other camo glad ppl -
stopped raining ...got some plowing done.

So this is what I've gotten done so far....may plant the rest of beans here in a little bit.....lots more spraying ...liming and discing to do but these two sections are pretty ready...I'll have lots to do before the fall plantings...... -
You guys must be in some very active hunter areas...for there is very little small game hunting going on around us...and yep every single person that gun and or bow hunts here....muzzle load hunts as well...and all those guys that spend so much time whining bow hunters get all the big bucks before us gunners will so be out in the woods...now granted it is one shot..... but say you have that guy in camo and the bow guy in camo...it only takes one shot...If your going to bring in new regulations that put more ppl out in the woods ...with different hunting styles and weapons....Coming off a year of accidental shootings...then be smart enough to add some safety measures...mandatory orange for all gun hunters....common sense
-
No I didn't say that...I'm just pointing out the possible draw backs...personally I only hunt private land...and have always thought from sightings here...that Oct 1 would give me a very nice chance a a good buck...They are more at ease...seen more during the day hours and not running full board at doe or away from other buck...sparring is happening but not full out battles...just my observations on our lands Now public lands are a whole other story and ...Well I do see a problem for those guys...We still don't have mandatory orange for gun hunters...which I personally think should be a must...at the very least it would give bow hunters a chance to see possible dangers and try to avoid such....
-
The problem with this is they over issued doe permits for 8N for too many years and as of last year they are reversing this...so that makes no scense and if they wanted to increase harvest then just have a doe and buck tag issued for each bow hunter...no applying for the DMP Two gun seasons mixed into a season where ppl are hunting in full camo with bows....Wow what a wonderful idea that is!...The youth that accidentally shoots a bow hunter will surely have a memorable time...and gee 245-300+ grain bullets whizzing through the woods with camo clad guys hunting...hey no room for an accident there?...Whats next ...mandatory orange for all bow hunters?... They aren't adding to the bow season...They are taking at least 3 days away....unless your on well guarded private property...or feel very very lucky
-
So much debate on too many...not enough deer and the # of DMP's and damage permits given out....why no studies on the damage caused by the lack of small game hunting?...We have a farmer that for the first time planted soybeans....I said the deer really shouldn't bother them all that much for its a new thing and our doe population is low...In large part thanks to the huge number of DMP's handed out for too many years...now they are in Oooopps mode and lowering them : Also the beans will regrow...producing just not quite as much... Then I drove by the other day a few different times and his fields had several very lrg wood chucks taking rows of beans down to dirt...and as I was driving by my yet unplanted field a mob(6- of rabbits scattered every which way crossing in front of the car...which explains the clover plots condition...very thin My point is...It bugs me that all a deer has to do is browse through an area and leave droppings( browse being the key word)....not much damage....and chucks ...rabbits...voles can go through the same area mowing it to dirt it...and the deer are to blame....

Mr. B. and I took two nice turkey out of this blind this spring....I just got the PT wood to get the 8 ft one built in the next couple of weeks....Then 12ft high one before fall

Small Harvest/ Attraction Plots
growalot replied to Bballhunter11's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I agree with and have had the same experience as Cabin Fever....that being said ...I haven't used that mix but have planted winter and spring trictical and winter wheat...I personally think the deer preferred the trical more and was able to mow it and it kept growing...it's basically a form of grass that only wants to produce seed...and will try it's best to do so....you could also throw on some rape or turnips for the late fall hunting -
T/C farm and tractor has them on sale right now I think....

Congrats to you all ...she's a cutie for sure and very healthy looking for being nearly a month early...You know this means she'll be a real go getter for sure ....Enjoy
