if they're too heavy, the state will cater to you and you can get can get a special handicapped permit to allow you to gun hunt during archery. Obamanation!

I don't have a problem with the rule, but I do find it odd we refer to this as a family site. The "kids" here are almost all over 18... I haven't even seen Joe post in a while. There is very easy filter software that most sites use to block swearing. Instead of being reactive, why not just be proactive and enable the filters instead of banning/suspending people?
-
that's awesome. If you don't mind me asking; what did that set you back?

agreed, there are situations though where the 500' rule would hurt perfectly safe situations. At my house I have a stand very close to a neighbors backyard. Nothing but woods north, south and west. His backyard is fenced in and i would be closer than 500' to his house (350' to be exact) and there's little chance the deer dies in his yard.
-
Of course I've never hunted with one. I have indeed shot one at the range, they're impressive. Waiting for the deer to come in front of me? Are you serious? That's no different than gun hunting. You sit and wait till they're in range and you have a lane and you pull the trigger. You just proved my point.

in fairness to this guy, that emoji is part of the site. If the site doesn't want it used it should be moved be gone. I noticed that a while back too, and technically it doesn't display the swear unless you quote it.

Is it legal to target practice in my backyard
Five Seasons replied to faust1578's topic in Bow Hunting
my understanding is that discharge limits apply to target and hunting. So you would need your neighbors permission to make it legal. I think most neighbors don't mind target shooting in safe directions, but until you have their permission I think they can legally blow you in. -
I understand and agree. The issue is that most of us like our meat AND horns. I always fill my freezer, but I try to get some nice horns in the process. Make it hard enough to enjoy what we like about hunting and ruin a good thing and you'll have less hunters in the woods as well. More out of state trips for enjoyable, less pressured bigger bucks. There are ways to reduce heard and grow deer at the same time. And angering your most devoted horn hunters can have a ripple affect.

I just got sick to my stomach.

april fools!

It's laughable how you consistently leave the hundreds of millions of dollars the manufacturers had riding on this, plus a bunch of writers for a popular state magazine with hard-ons for the NYB out of this. I will tip my hat to the NYCC, but they were far from alone in getting this passed. There is no manufacturer with millions at stake who needed to keep the crossbow out... only the other way around.

because you were obviously upset that I started a hunting thread. I was wondering if you'd prefer I start non-hunting related threads like she did multiple times a day.

it's the offseason and we're bored and you basically said hello to the site by insulting the majority of us. I think there's actually more bowhunters who also gun hunt than there are just gun hunters. I doubt you'd walk into a church and introduce yourself by claiming God doesn't exist right? But of course, it's much easier to insult peoples way of life behind a keyboard isn't it? at the age of 16 i received my browning as a Christmas present. I gun hunted at least 6 years before i was at a place in my life that I could buy a bow and devote time to become proficient with it. My love of deer season is really what prompted me to buy a bow and spend more time in the woods. Now after bow hunting almost 10 years I have fell in love with the archery season. I think most people get into archery after gun.
-
there is probably a lot of truth to bowhunters being "buck hunters". It's hard to argue that. Occupying the best time and managing herd is not what bow season is about though. When the guns go off my local butchers processing time goes from over night (archery) to 5 days. They stack em high, they put on drives, and a lot of deer are killed. I don't see the problem with the 2 seasons being the way they are. If anything, I'd push for a 1 buck limit or 2 buck tags to be used all season long regardless of weapon. Why can't I kill 2 bucks with a bow (without waiting till december) instead of 1 with a bow and 1 with gun?

I still don't see whining. I just reiterated all the same crap i always have. Look at my very first post in this thread and tell me I went off the rails. Should I start threads about the weather like growie? would that be better? I'm not the one who made it go multiple pages.
-
this we will agree on. i'm still concerned that the crossbow hunter believes the hype and doesn't practice at all. I agree there are bowhunters who do the same, but I'm guessing the numbers would be less.
-
where i have I "whined" once? And again, when you've been successful for decades... doesn't that buy you some rights? that was my whole point with the sports team analogy. Maybe it went over your head. Or were you busy thanking Cuomo?
-
it's kind of like the sports team that lost season after season after season, and then they win and now they're the king **** huh? It's not even official and it's funny to see the bragging going on. A division III school storming the court... Most of us knew the day would eventually come. As other said, it's a surprise it took as long as it did and I believe it to be a testament to a bunch of us fighting and doing all we could. I would not consider it a total loss. You don't get the whole season and there's a minor compromise. It's not a win, win. But it's a start for hunters in general to getting along. If that's even possible Now we have ARs to debate.

What do you think level of training is needed to take a 100 yard compound shot versus a 100 yard crossbow shot? Why can't I set up in a blind and use my crossbow rest in my blind, similar to a rifle and at least shoot out to 60? Sure I could shoot 60 yards with my compound but I bet I'd be practicing a lot more to feel good about taking that shot. All I have to do is site in my crossbow scope right? Similar to the 8 year old boy shooting a trophy buck out off a platform with his dad's rifle on a rest... there's just not as much effort and training needed. That was my only point. That and I don't have to time my draw right either. Just cocked and locked. Pull the trigger. And this doesn't even get into the "over confidence" factor that many gun hunters have. I can imagine, if crossbows are as challenging as many of you claim, the amount of hunters who will take theirs out of the box and head into the woods thinking they're Daryll from the walking dead. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Hunting-Treestands/Treestand-Accessories|/pc/104791680/c/104783580/sc/104649480/Steddy-Eddy/745225.uts?destination=%2Fcategory%2FTreestand-Accessories%2F104649480.uts&WTz_l=Unknown%3Bcat104649480 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Hunting-Treestands/Treestand-Accessories|/pc/104791680/c/104783580/sc/104649480/Iron-Talon-Crossbow-Gun-Holder/728007.uts?destination=%2Fcategory%2FTreestand-Accessories%2F104649480.uts&WTz_l=Unknown%3Bcat104649480

Simple math indeed

You missed the metaphor. To make it more clear, my statement was that until you show us you're a good hunter you're the equivalent of a non-worker on welfare with an opinion of those who do work. I honestly apologize if my comment was taken the wrong way by anyone. By no means what so ever does ones economic status reflect who they are as a person or how well they hunt.
-
Bowhunting was a growing sport, it was and has not been dying. Simple fact checking of the DEC reports would show you the increase in archery tags and decrease in gun hunters. So why did crossbows save the sport? Who will not hunt with a crossbow who didn't already hunt with a compound or gun? I've asked this question so many times and it's never answered. Keep in mind, that from the beginning I've been pro xbow for disabled and elderly

what? remember we all don't shoot 8 deer a season... number does not equal skill.

Many said they would not support anything he does. Read the thread I linked to and wait for the newspaper headlines praising him. And join him in his fishing derby too. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
