interestingly enough I'll admit my weapon of choice went from my browning 12 gauge to a pistol when I bought one, but honestly a short barreled shotgun or carbine is so much more accurate than a pistol it's funny so many (myself included) choose a pistol. And with the short barrel your CCQ should remain relatively the same. I can see not wanting to use a 28" bird barrel of course. now those who spend hours at the range may not fall into this category, but most of us are decent shots, but with adrenaline pumping and poor vision, man it seems like that .223 ar15 or short barrel turkey gun would be such a better choice than a recoil heavy pistol. Furthers the preference for buck shot too.

i thought i had us back on track, only to see we've gone to rehashing the first 12 pages again. dangit!

Sounds fair, but how many were brand new to hunting and how many were already gun hunters? I actually figured you'd bring that up and I agree with you, but I wanted to avoid the 4 paragraph post and keep the discussion to weapon type as it wouldn't derail the thread as much as "ranking kills". I figured I'd also leave type of firearm out as there's pistols and muzzleloaders too. I was trying to make a basic point.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

the issue is not repairing your home. It's the neighbors in an apartment or your kids sleeping in the other room. Read up on some of the FBI ballistics studies that were recently performed. They don't just use hallow points because of their expansion, but also because they do not penetrate multiple targets like a FMJ will. Some cool reading on some of the polymer HPs like Hornady critical defense too. Concept is the polymer will prevent the hollowpoint from becoming clogged and becoming a FMJ. there's a good video on the NRA website if you're a member that I can't seem to link to that actually does a good job explaining the concept

I agree, however I think the point of the .22 is that for those unwilling to train (like the professionals), it's the easiest to be good with. And the, it's better than nothing. I plan to pick up an LCP for my wife. In time could she handle a LC9? Probably, but she's just not that into going to the range and more into being a mom. So shots on target with a .380 is better than no hits at all. My thoughts have always been, and I bet most of you agree. The best weapon for defense is going to be different for everyone. There is no one size fits all.
-
Maybe it's just me, but being able to handle something is very similar to being proficient.

I'm just saying you're both on one side of the argument. And I also wanted to stir the pot.

I am totally guessing, but I bet 75% or more of bowhunters keep their bow. xbows aren't cheap and there is a stigma of using one (not that you may care, but some might). So it will be an addition of new hunters. Many say this is positive for the sport and I agree that it is, however I believe any new hunters to crossbow are already gun hunters. So how many NEW hunters do they bring? Or does it just add more hunters to the archery woods? And is this good or bad? we go round and round. Shooting a nice buck with any weapon is an accomplishment. But when stacked side by side and forced to rank it goes like this rife/xbow/compound/recurve Again, numerous hunters could care less what other hunters think. But some do. And when faced with picking up a crossbow I think a fair number stick with their compound for this reason, the others for monetary reasons. Myself, I am still undecided. There are however, numerous other things I'd put $1k down on first, including a rifle for my now rifle legal county.

I think there's little argument there. I chose the .40 glock because I also cc, and I wanted an easier to shoot handgun for the frame size. Like someone else mentioned, i'd rather put smaller caliber on target than miss with a larger. But for bedsize defense, cc doesn't matter. So go big frame, big round imho.
-
I'm usually on the other side of caliber wars. There's a nice one going on at glocktalk in reference to the .380 in the G42... but a heavy leather coat or eventhough unlikely a light vest... I'm not so sure. It's not that your attacker is left uninjured or able to survive, but did you STOP him? Or was he not wounded enough to prevent him from coming at you with that knife despite those little holes... I've always felt a short tactical shotgun with 5 rounds of buckshot would be best. Even a 20 gauge.
-
I used to keep my ruger 10/22 under the bed. and was DESTROYED on another forum for not using my 12 gauge. I was watching best defense last night and they were actually talking about a low caliber lever action rifle. The best argument for this choice in my opinion has less to do with recoil and finding the target and more with the drywall/penetration. All that aside, I feel comfortable with my skills and hallow points in my glock 23. It's in a gunvault at my bedside table. loaded and with a flashlight. In the future I'd like to get a .45 (preferably a 1911) with a light attachment.

NY does not have a primitive weapons season, it's archery season so I'm not even sure why your point is. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I know it's not a new concept. And it's always pissed me off. Just as much as political parties. Why does a republican candidate have to be pro life? Run what ya brung. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I guess the rock, club, spear and bow did not come before the crossbow? boggling for sure.

My personal stance on crossbows aside... this state is a mess. Sticking things like this in the budget that could derail or delay it is so asinine. Why not vote on the budget and keep issues like this separate. The state has had it's financial problems for years and the least of their worries should be the crossbow, and I'm sure it is. But the crossbow issue is just one in a long line of rules and regs thrown into budgets to try and get them passed. I don't get it... again regardless of where you stand. Unfortunately this puts some of those in favor of crossbows AND their second amendment rights in a tight spot. Why would a pro 2nd amendment citizen of NY ever write their assemblyman to support something Cuomo has put out?

I'm going to see if I can figure out the driver behind the 6" rule, but a hunch of mine is that it has the same idea as ARs do, and while perhaps my initial post referring to habitat and numbers being down will threw the convo off, I believe the idea is for hunters over 15 to get more shots at better birds, just like the goal of ARs is to get more chances at bigger bucks.

did any body point out that Phade and Moog are buddies? *stirs pot*

Funny thing is that the only topics that go multiple pages are those where we disagree. Otherwise they're over in a few posts. Keeps things interesting I guess.

Orion, What you need to do is go to a shop. Stop listening to the back and forth here on the interweb. Go to a professional. Try out and pick a release and have him suggest an anchor point. I use the corner of my mouth and my nose. You need 2. Then have him measure you. It's really pretty simple and I'm sure that like me, 90% of others have done the same thing when they got measured. From there, start looking for a bow that's in your price range. I'm a Matthews leg humper, so I can't recommend anything else but most bows today are well made. Most pro shops will sell Matthews, and dicks will not. That's because Matthews wants a professional to sell you the right bow, not a pimple faced kid at walmart.
