Like all things hunting many combos, weapons etc will get it done. For most it's just about increasing the odds.

A glock 23 or 19. Same frame in either .40 or 9. It's small enough to conceal but not to small to hold and not to big to try and hide. I think it's the sweet spot, but I'm a 23 owner so I might be biased. The full frames are good bedside guns and the pocket pistols have their place too. Pretty much any gun in this size is a great buy from any manufacturer. The glock is nothing fancy but it's reputation for reliability is not make believe. To a point. Sometimes harder to hill higher pressured deer can make it frustrating. Kill some doe and don't worry about horns. 95% of shows on tv are not representative, but d&dh is one of the more educational, if not a little advanced for the beginner. Your best bet is a friend or relative, but not required. I was taught to deer hunt by family and self taught myself turkey. Have you hunted any small game? Hunting is not for everyone. You should start small to see if it's something you like. Start small with gear too. You can invest a small fortune in "nice it have" gear and camo that you don't need. Like golf, don't go out and buy some Taylor made clubs until you know it's your thing. Welcome to the fun! You clearly have something against Matthews and proper grammar, so I felt it was necessary to add my .02 on why a lot of people shoot Matthews. Sorry for not getting all the specs right. You'll notice I did not say I ever shot the chill, nor did I discount other bows. Just simply trying to squash the Matthews hate I see all the time. I shoot an old switchback and I've never wounded or missed a deer. That bow has been all over the woods and never once given me grief. You're absolutely right... However there's also a reason any brand or model is popular and it's usually because they check the most boxes for most people. Do you see more iPhones or windows phones? Are windows phones better? Maybe for some, but not most. Is a Camry the best car for all? No. But it is for the largest population segment. You claim that he should look at other bows and hypocritically dismiss the ones he's interested in. Not everyone wants to monkey and tweak their cams. That's the beauty of Matthews solo. It might not be the fastest but it's one of the easiest and most reliable to shoot. I prefer not to buy my bow from a pimply faced kid at dicks... I'd trust an authorized dealer at an archery shop.
