  1. that sucks. ive been using smith packing in marion recently. they tag your deer when you get in. walk in freezer, vacuum seal. We try to butcher ourselves when we can but it only makes sense if we have 2 or more hanging.
  2. i wasn't trying to blame the trailerparks, sorry if you took it that way. It's the stereotype that i'm referring too. And you're correct all walks of life, gender, race and religion have their scumbags. But when some hunter shoots another or has a slug hit the side of a school the image conjured up is of a slack jawed yocal and i'm sick of being lumped in with that stereotype. Of course there's also the white collar weekend hunter who has $1k in underarmor gear a brand new gun and dressed to impress... these guys tend to shoot at the running deer, trespass knowingly and leave the gall bladder in. haha.
  3. screamon you hit him in front of the shoulder? must have been a crazy angle. congrats on some nice bucks guys
  4. a prerut buck is sooo much nicer tasting. I shot a 150lb 5 point on 10/22 and he's leaps and bounds better tasting than the 160lb 9 i shot on thanksgiving last year.
  5. umm i hunt deer near corn fields. why would this make anyone skeptical? The only rule change i heard about was youth hunt, early bow season, the failed archery proximity to building reduction. What's this other change? walmart was out of books when i bought my supersportsman
  6. nice story. very similar to that of my grandfathers. never heard the term "runway" though
  7. you'd have to do that when all you shoot is doe
  8. i dont know why we as a group do this. the only time i've messed with someones stuff is when it was put on my propery illegally, and even then i've left notes first. Some people really do promote the stereotype that we're all just a bunch of redneck trailer park hicks shooting bambi when a good portion of us are hard working and even white collar suit and ties that like to get in the woods. you might want to put up some trail cams in some hidden spots because chances are they'll be back.
  9. honestly, unless there's an apple orchard nearby you're introducing foreign scents to the area and while you might suck in some young deer i think this will deter the mature deer.
  10. sounds like you're hunting in a neighbors vegetable garden haha
  11. the recent cold front i think has started them moving again. many sources have also predicted this week as a good week for movement
  12. that's wild man. i once had a dow lock eyes with me for a good 45min. neck was sore for a week.
  13. i do the same. Most of mine are post field dressing and i'm always sure to brush the deer, put some leaves over the stomach, wipe the blood from the horns and other areas and I redress in my camo. It's respectful and I share my photos here and on othersites. We as hunters face enough criticizim from the non-hunters/anti-hunters that we dont need anything to help their cause. I can just see that arrow shot posted on a PETA website now. I know it's not the same, but as humans we clean and dress up our deceased before we bury them, if you're going to take pictures at least show some respect. If you're not taking pictures than it really doesn't matter.
  14. that's sickening. 2 hours of looking IN THE MORNING! i'd search all day for any deer. If it was night, i'd search all day the next. I'll add 3 things. Waiting 30-45 minutes is not nearlly enough unless you know you hit him in the heart/lungs at 10 yards. The other is that i'm always hearing "the deer moved when I released" I never buy this. Finally, he was at 35 yards and out of my range but I figured I'd try it? Really? There is so little regard for the animals life with this mindset and it's obvious by the fact that he barely looked for it.
  15. so you shot a spike and missed 4 deer? Do i have that right?
  16. hunting out of a stand will pretty much negate any chance of you shooting into someones land unless you're shooting a deer on their property or are a really bad shot. simple a^2+b^2=c^2 there.
  17. except for that we're always chasing, or in the case of us married guys "locked down". Could you imagine if there was a human mating season? that would be something. someone should make a movie about that.
  18. i shot my nine last year on thanksgiving chasing 3 doe and grunting like a pig. ya never know.
  19. it's called "the journal" haha. you can probably find it by searching "deer journal" in the store. the reason i want more years is because you can input activity at each stand at each time. it syncs to moon phases and temperature. the more data the more accurate, although there are so many other variables like other hunters, when the farmers cut the corn etc.
  20. I just moved in and they own 10 acres that butts up to mine. There's a few good spots on their land and that property butts up to another 80 owned by a girl i went to high school withs father. So i'm going to try and get in good with him and ask to bow hunt. If he says no i might put some nails in their ramps jk jk
  21. playing wind and patterns is all you can do. it's still a crap shoot sometimes. i started keeping a jornal using an iphone app last year and that helps too, but i need another 2 or 3 years of entries to really make is useful. We have one spot with 2 stands withing 50 yards of each other. they cover a bunch of runs in a funnel. there's been many times where we've chosen the wrong one and kicked ourselves.
  22. buttons are the dumbest deer in the woods. that's why so many get killed. On the other hand, if you can fool a mature doe you're doing it right. Not having any meat and not seeing any does gets you a pass in my book as well. But i'd argue you shouldn't shoot a button on opening day either unless it's your only hunt. not many here will argue a young or new hunter (especially with archery) should pass on any deer. When you're new to hunting it should always be "if it's brown, it's down"
  23. the conditions are right for these next few days to be active. This could either mean they're all tuckered out come saturday or that the trend continues. Should be interesting. Weather will play a lot into it if you're not hunting a pressured land where humans will get them moving for you.
