  1. Have you ever notice that year after year the same people always get a buck. We ask are they lucky or maybe they know something that others don't. My father hunted for years and never got a buck, then on the other side, I had a brother in-law who got a buck every year that I can remember. Yes there is some luck that comes into play, but for the most part, it is the way we hunt. Every year I get (2) two bucks, one with bow and one with gun, and during the season I see other bucks. Some people say that I am a good hunter, while others say that I am lucky. I have a brother that tells others how lucky I am because of the big bucks that I get. I say we make our own luck. When I hunt,I don't hunt just deer, I hunt bucks. If I am hunting on land that I know and have hunted it many times before , then finding a buck is made a lot easier. When hunting land for the first time I don't look for deer so much, as I try to learn the lay of the land. I try to find the cover and locate the open woods, and how the land lays ,north, south, east, and west. That is important to me. There is a difference between being a deer hunter and a buck hunter. I don't claim to know all the answers for getting a buck every year, but I do have places were I know if I hunt there, I am more likly to see a buck than just deer. So get out there and learn the lay of the land. Learn were north, south ,east and west is. Learn were the shade is and what time of day. Learn to be a buck hunter and not just another deer hunter. We all have our good days and bad ,but dont give up.
  2. I started hunting 55 years ago because I loved the woods and the smell of fall, the colors of the trees and the first snow fall. I loved it all and it was fun. Most of all I loved seeing the animals. To me , tracking a deer and getting close without it knowing I was there ,that was the best, be it a trophy buck or doe, a mature deer or a yearling, they were all trophys to me. If I was lucky to harvest one, I would show it off with pride. Back then you would find very few posted signs and when you did find one, you knew that it was owned by someone from down state, the city. The locals didn't post their land. All you had to do was ask if you could hunt and the answer was always the same, yes. After a few years of the down staters buying up land and posting it , the locals started posting theirs, To keep the city hunters out, not the locals. Hunting was fun and everyone enjoyed the outdoors. Today all of that has changed, The simplicity has gone out of hunting. The fun for is gone. Why? The answer to that is, Attitude, there are some who worry more about killing a trophy buck than just enjoying the hunt it self. People are ready to criticize others for the way others hunt, the taking of young bucks and not letting the deer to mature. The killing of does. There is so much negtive attitude, that hunting is not fun any more. Alot of todays hunters are living in a dream world or TV land, they watch TV hunting shows and think everyone should hunt and think that way and that way only. The days of when you would be on stand and some one would come walking by, you would wave and maybe talk a little bit and wish each other good luck. Today some hunters get pissed because you are in thier area and they think that you have ruin thier hunt. Get a life. There are others who spend more time hunting trespassers than hunting deer. They are up set because some one has a stand near their property line and they worry more about that, than they do enjoying the hunt. Some one else might get that trophy buck that he has trail cam pictures of. Todays hunters are all about me, me,me. Todays hunter are a selfish cry baby. They jealousy guard there hunting land. Hunting to them is no longer recreational. They have to be in control all the time. This makes them the great hunter, that they see on TV. There is no camaradene in hunting today. Maybe some of us need to rethink the way we hunt and think more about how we treat other hunters. Then we can start to enjoy hunting again and let it be fun.
  3. Yesterday I had to go to the grocery store to pick up a few things for the wife.As I was waiting in the checkout line ,the woman ahead of me, who was being checkedout said that she had forgotten something and needed to get it and would I mind waiting a little bit. I told her to go get it.When she got back, she told me to put my things down so the cashier could ring my things and she would pay for it. I told her no thankyou that wasn't necessary. she told me that when she goes shopping for grocery that she pays for everyones grocery that is in the same line as her. I said that I could pay for my own. She said ,that she wanted to pay for mine again. I told her that I could afford my own and that I didn't need someone to pay for it. I also told that there are far more people in need and that she should help them. She told me that when grocery shopping , she did not discriminate against anyone and if I didn't believe her to ask the cashier. I looked at the cashier and was told yes. I told her that I still wanted to pay for my own and she said ok. After this woman left , I asked the cashier if this was true and she told me that this woman doses it all the time. The cashier told that last week , the woman paid over a thousand dollars for all people in line behind her , no matter what anyone has in their cart. Now this woman didn't look or act crazy. The clothes she had on were the same any normal person would wear.. Everything about this woman was normal. I don't know if this woman feels guilty because she has more than others or maybe she hit the lotto, I don't know. I hope no one takes advantage of her, because she could do so much good for people in need. All I can say is god bless her.
  4. I shot a doe with my bow back twenty or so years ago. I made what I considered a good hit on her, I hit her just behind the shoulder. When I hit her, she turned and ran 30 yards and laid down. I said to myself, got her. I shot her at about 4:00 pm in afternoon. I sat and watched until dark and she never put her head down. She had two fawns with her. I was hunting close to my brothers house , so I went over to get a cup of coffee and to give her time to die. After an hour and a half I headed out with my brother to get the deer. My brother had a big flash light and we headed out to get her. When we got there , she was still there with her head up and looking around. Her two fawns were laiding by her. When we put the light on her, her eyes were as dull as can be , but her head was up. I told my brother that we should back out and come back in the morning to get her. The next morning I was in no hurry ,so I got to my brother house about 8:30 the next morning. My brother said he would give me a hand to get her out. We got up there about 9:00 am. There was a heavy frost on the gound. We walked up to were she had been laiding and she was gone. All that was there was a full bed of blood. We figured with all the blood in her bed that she couldn,t be far. We had to get down on our hands and knees to track her. We went a good 400 yards that way, finding little specks of blood. we found her because her two fawn got up and ran a short distance and stood waiting for her. She was still alive. We jumped on her and had to cut her throat and even then she did not want to die. When we cut her throat there was not one drop of blood in her. The only thing I could figure was that her fawns keep her goig. When we cut her open to clean her out ,we checked what I had hit. I took out one lung and and sliced one side of her heart. After that hit and laiding al night in that cold, and then to get up and go that far is hard to bellieve and I will never forget it. She did not want to die
  5. I don't know what he has for a shotgun or if he has a pistol or not. I do know that he does hunt with a muzzle loader, because I have talked to him about hunting with one. I know that his first love is bow hunting. I know that what ever he does it will be what he feels is right. Like I said in a earlier post, giving a little time to think about it , then he will let people he knows hunt. I hope.
  6. I guess I didn't catch why this guy can't hunt during gun season. Is there some problem with that. For people with arm, hand, shoulder and back problems, the gun is actually the more suitable weapon. When I can no longer pull my bow, that is exactly what I intend to do. That is if the rest of my body is up to even that. You know, hunting is a physical activity and whether we want to admit it or not, there does come a time when we will no longer be able to do what we use to. If I can't bowhunt, the next logical step is to gun hunt. If the time comes that I can not pick up and shoot a gun, then I guess the crossbow probably won't help either. What I probably won't do is to throw a tantrum and try to take it out on everyone around me because I'm not being accomodated. When I talked to him, the subject of gun hunting never came up. He lives in shotgun country and that's were his land is. It could be that maybe the recoil from a shotgun would be to much for him, I don't know, I didn't ask. I know that with a bad back sometimes any sullen movment can be very painful. This man is not a grumpy old man, and he knows that by posting his land that the DEC could less. I don't know for a fact, and I won't say what it is but I think I know what he is doing. I think that when he has a little time to think about it , he will let some people that he knows hunt. I think that he is upset with all that has been going on with his back and the way the state came out with the crossbow law. Believe me this man is a real nice guy.
  7. SteveB, What do you consider "max for conditions" How many acres and how many hunters?
  8. Bucks are moving alot so he could have come from another area. They move from area to area if there is a dominate buck around they will push the smaller buck to the point that will leave the area for another.
  9. A friend of mine shot a big doe last week and gave her a hour to lay up. He got down and started tracking it. He went about 80 yards and shooked (2) bear cubs up a tree. He then walked up to the tree and about 20 yards the other side laid his deer with mommy bear laying next to it. She gave a loud GRRRRRRR! and he backed off and headed for home. Now that a week has passed he is going up to check it out. So be careful out there.
  10. GOOD MORING, LETS GO BOWHUNTING. I wish everyone good luck and straight shooting. Now get out there and get one.
  11. erusssell, I am sorry to read that you feel that way. This man is 68 years old and the older we get, the longer it takes to heal. Erussell, the land that this man owns is in Broome Co. and I know that you live in Broome Co.. Are you happy that you ,me and alot of others have lost 500 acres of hunting land? That's how I read your post. This man has worked hard his whole life to have what he has and now someone tells him ,he can not use it. I would be pissed too. When we are young we walk around thinking , nothing is going to happen to me I am to careful and besizes what could happen. Let me tell you that it can happen to you, me or anyone, at anytime. God forbid that something should happen to you, but if it did, how would you feel if someone said to you "don't sweat it". As far as this man having to pull back on his crossbow, it has a hand crank. He has three sons to gut and drag his deer out. This man went out and bought a electric fore wheel card to get himself around. Where there is a will ,there is a way.
  12. Today, I went shopping and ran into an old friend of mine. When I asked him how he was doing ,he told me ,not good he owns and works a small construction outfit and has worked hard his whole life. He has a very bad back and had (2) two surgery on it in the pass. This pass spring they went and did some more on his back and had to put in a rod and some pins. He told that he can not even stand up straight. Now this man loves to hunt and lives to hunt with a bow. He can not even start to pull back his bow, so he went out and got himself a crossbow this summer and started to practice with it, only to find out that he could not hunt with it even with a doc. slip and this has him very upset and mad. Now this man owns about 500 acres that has never been posted and he would let anyone who asked hunt. He told me that he has had it with New York State and the DEC. If he can not hunt he own land with a crossbow during bow season than nobody can hunt. he sent his son out to post every in. of it. I will tell you, he is upset. Thankyou New York Bowhunters , his words, not mine. What do you think.
  13. Does anyone know were I can buy a card viewer to view the disk from my trail camera while out in the woods. I ran into another person in the woods who had one. He told me, that he got his at Wal-Mart. I checked Wal-Mart and was told no they do not sell them. I checked out Best Buy and they don't sell them. The one, this guy had was about the size of a small auto GPS . all it does is let you view the pictures from the disk from your trail camera. Any help please. Thanks noodle one
  14. I tried to get on the site Sat. morning and got a security warning, so I backed off and waited three hours and got it again. I tried late in afternoon and the site came on ok, I clicked on to a post that I wanted read and BANG it hit me (SECURITY TOOL) They try to put the fear of god in you. Don't buy into it. It took me all day Sun. to get out of it , but with a little from a friend we got it working ok. Still running slow, so I may need to have it cleaned up by someone. I have virus protection. erussell, check out (Black Sheep Computers on upper Court St. Phone-595 1311) They do good work and are fair and it won't cost you an arm and a leg.
  15. What I do when making a mock scrape is to found alot of sign, dropping and tracks. If you are hunting a place were you have hunted for years this is a big advantage. Deer are creatures of habit and will make a scrape in the same area, or same spot year after year. When I walk in the woods, I petty much know were the old scrapes are. To be successful with a mock scrape, you need to be the first one there to make a scrape and urinate in it. Not deer urine, mine urine. I do not put any thing on the licking branch and I do not put my hands on it. Hands are a no no. You want to put the scrapes in the woods, not field edges, most scrapes found on edges of fields are night time work and you would be wasteing your time. Also when looking for sign (droppping and tracks), make sure that it is day time sign and not night time. When going into a new place, I first find the sign and look for spots that look like a natural site, deer trails, small trees with over hanging branches. If you are lucky, your first one will work. It might take a doz. trys, don't give up.because it does work. Now is the time to do it.
  16. How many on here make their own mock scrapes and then urinate in it. I have been doing this for about 10 years now and have found that it works as good as or better than store bought scent if places in the right spot. Today I went into a new hunting place and make three of them and set out a camera. I will be going back on Sun. to check and see if I put them in the right spot.
  17. Sawyer Premium insect repellent for clothing (odorless Permthrin). Will kill ticks on contact. Spray on clothing only.(NOT ON SKIN) Last up to 6 weeks with one spraying. After spraying clothes, let dry for two hours before wearing. I buy mine at Cabela's. I hear that Dick's are selling it now also. Good Luck and happy hunting. noodle one
  18. I am 67 years young. Life is good. Anytime you can wakeup and look around is better than lying on your back and looking up.
  19. In the last (2) two days, I have seen (2) deer that have been hit by cars along the road and both of them were bucks. I guess it is that time of the year when the bucks are moving from their summer homes to their winter homes and starting to look for does. Has anyone else notice this in your zones. I am in 7s.
  20. I had one in my left kinney and they had to blast it. They don't cut you open any more and I can't have ultra shock because of other health reasons. This was back in June and I still get a sharp pain now and then from it. I also have a kinney stone in my right kinney that is not giving any pain , but I have to have it checked every 3 months. I was in the hospital for 4 days and home sick for a month after they blasted it. As I write this I am drinking bottled water. The kinney specialize told me , well water is not good for someone with kinney stones. You wer luckly that you could pass them. (PS, I also have the gout ) .
  21. bubba, I am sorry, but I am getting mixed signals from your replys. In your first reply you stated ( careful noodle one next you will be stupid) . What doses that mean? ( lacking intelligence, dull, senseless, pointless). In your next reply you stated that you actually were siding with me. I in no way enjoy attacking individuals, but when someone insults or attacks me ,I DEFEND MYSELF.When a group of people try to inpose their wants and ideas on others and I feel it is wrong, then yes, I do speak up. If there was a misunderstanding on my part, then I am sorry.
  22. I don't care what your financial status and besides it is none of my business. I don't care if you are rich , poor or just a working man like myself. I wrote in my post that I have 1400 acres to hunt and I have money to do what I want. I only put that in the post so people would know that I am not just jealous of what others have. I am 66 years old going on 67 next month and retired. My children are grown and my home is paid for, so yes I do have money to do what I want. Now please tell me where I went wrong in my post, telling people how I feel and see things. All my life all I wanted was to have people treat me right and that is how I treat others. I hope that this answers some of your questions for you about my post. Now please tell me where I am wrong and show me what is right. If you can not see greed in what others are trying to do , then you are not looking very close.
  23. Fairgame, Please don't take this so personal and be so petty with your replys. If you disgree with my post, please state were you think I am wrong and than state what you feel is right. Please ,please , life is to short to have hurt feeling.
  24. Sorry you feel that way bubba , but with a name like yours, I can't expect much more.
