  1. Neither I hike about 100 or more yards down wind.(where I don't want the deer to come from)
  2. Bill I'm familar with west fulton some huge bucks used to come out of there 20 years ago. I think the hay day of that area has come and gone. The land use will have to change to improve the habitat. My only suggestion is to get a spot on the ridge closest to rt. 30 and maybe you'll catch up with a big buck that feeds at night in the veggie fields. On the other hand the bear population of that area is on the rise.
  3. Any Trappers out there? Animals nose is one of there best senses. Having a trapping back round I know what certain scents and there PROPER USE can do for you. You can bet your bottom dollar that if USED PROPERLY it will draw in deer (bucks) for you. If a deer comes in then spooks my guess is you weren't careful and the deer scented you. Using lures doesn't allow you to be sloppy, you still must do your scouting and being as scent free as possibe is a good idea. Remember the wind and thermals when placing your lure. If the deer is coming from behind you and the lure is in front of you guess what he's liable to see or smell you first. What do I use? Doe in Heat. What brand? I've used many of them. What works for me? I use tinks most of the time only because it is most available. I heard that the base for most of these doe in heat lures is cow urine and that there are not enough farm deer to provide enough doe in heat urine (which is a very short period of time the does are in heat) for which they sell in the usa. Any way you non trappers talk to a trapper and see how he makes a living foolling wily coyote.
  4. This is a good question. I'm going to say no. If the snow hadn't settled and melted as quick as it did I think it could have been devastated. There might be isolated pockets where they had a severe winter kill, but for the most part the snow settled and the deer were able to move to get food. In my area the deer population plumeted the winter of 2003 and it has struggled to make a come back. I think it is increasing but not as fast as DEC thought and it has not reached the 2003 level. I spend alot of time in Schoharie and Delaware county.
  5. I hunt most of the time in 4P some time in 4G and 4R.
  6. My feeling on this is simple the deer are out there 24/7 so I spend all the time I can out there. What ever works for someone is fine. I don't even mind the guys that come up and play cards and drink all day. If that makes them happy more power to them.
  7. I have been from Calcoun to Narrowsburg but it was 30 years ago. There should be places along the river to fish. If you have waders it might help. You can canoe all along that route.
  8. Nice deer good luck putting them in the freezer.
  9. Thanks shot it around 11am all by himself with nose up and lip curled I hadn't seen a deer in hours.
  10. I get to my stand at 6am and leave 6pm the first week after that it depends on the conditions.
  11. I'm not sure the neighbor's would like it. But its a good idea I've seen fisher and mink and muskrat in the back yard.
  12. I haven't trapped in years but I still have all my traps and hope to get back into it when I retire.
  13. I wear mossy oak camo gore tex jacket, or coat, pants. An orange hat and a camo orange vest.
  14. I hunt bear country and go in the dark and come out in the dark. And I'm hunting bear. Its never made me feel uneasy. I worry more about some idiot shooting me than being attacked. I use a head lamp. I've done this in Delaware, Greene and several Adirondack counties.
  15. The Delaware is a big river, in fact I live between the east and west branch. Could you be more specific on a location.
