  1. This post fit's the rest of your posts. Job well done!
  2. Look into it. Where do you think all the compost comes from for the pretty rest area flowers on the thruway and Rt 81. Untested for the most part.
  3. Yeah like the compost pile in Cortland? If man has a hand on them then they should be tested. Of course all cant be done but many could before dumped on the pile. Cant be to safe in Ny ya know!
  4. Are any of these deer tested for anything before the birds eat them and then pass any disease forwards?
  5. Get er Done, Got er Did, Get er Did, Got er Done!
  6. Public land in Rensselear Falls area in Canton Ny Black Lake Area, Ft Drum has a great population of birds. Thats if this winter lets go here sometime soon. They are spending half the day on the roost in this weather and the other in the standing corn. I believe this year that is the only field keeping the 100 plus birds alive!
  7. Magnus cut on contact and 70lbs would show one quick dead bear. Even light poundage equals massive wounds.
  8. Take a look at these fines. Would not scare anyone from taking whatever they want!
  9. The outdoor news said you will see the new regs in print this summer in time for fall. They will blow this through so it law this year. More hunters will have to take time and really look before they shoot. Wont see as many wounded stories maybe?
  10. Laying in bed with the wife..I ask, You want to have sex, She instantly says NO. I say, Is that your final answer, She says YES. I say..Then i would like to call a friend! And here is where the fight begins!
  11. No i freakin knew i should have wrote it down. It was on direct Tv under the Drug Inc. show. It was a documentary on mary jane. From way back in like 1900 and before. How grass got started and how it was legal and then not. Way back when you could order your buzz from Sears and Robuck. lol Weed sure has came along way from then til now. Happy Times! Oh wait..this is about guns. They outlawed machine guns..in the courts...when the drugs started flowing and the cartel were going under ground moving it.
  12. I was watching an old show on tv where they made weed and machine guns of limits. I cant remember what they called the law now but they passed it. They used the excuse that when blacks got stoned they would get all horned up and go around raping white women. They shut down the guns when the cartel started moving around the weed.
  13. I dont believe the out of state thing..If you ever get on Letchworth for the last 2 weeks of bow and 1st week of shotgun take a gander at the out of state plates. I have talked with a few from different states and they all say the same thing...They come to Letchworth because of the chance at a buck of a lifetime. Higher licenses money will come in from out of state hunters. It may take a year or two or three but it will help. Take a look at all the states around us that are complaining about low deer harvests this year. The list is many really. They will still give heavy doe tags in areas like the 8's that have alot of deer. Saying all of that thou, I will be shocked if they do AR in the areas of the Dak's and such that have low deer numbers.
  14. Found this read interesting. ANTLER RESTRICTIONS COMING TO NY 2015 As the saying goes , “it was inevitable”. So what does the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) have in store for us ? Plenty it seems so let’s dig in and see what’s going to happen to deer hunting in NY….. This one has been brewing for quite some time so I guess we can’t be surprised. The DEC has made it clear the rules are changing and soon. By that I mean this season, which will require the DEC to come out with the plan real soon. The DEC has info right here for all to review if interested. One thing that stands out to me is the DEC isn’t hiding behind some kind of “healthier herd , balanced herd ” BS . They’re coming right out and admitting this is about growing bigger bucks and nothing more. That alone is a shock but personally I appreciate their honesty. We’ve had some level of antler restrictions here in NY the last few years. Can’t tell you I know much about the results because they seem to be difficult to find. The area where they’ve done it is in the Catskill region which is far from me and I don’t know anyone who hunts there. Let’s assume there are bigger bucks there since the restrictions were put in place. The DEC sounds as though their plan will have the capability to be customized , so to speak , for different regions of the state. Not sure what this exactly means but the Northern Zone is much different than the Southern Zone so I can see where they need to have some flexibility in how they manage all this. So where do we stand on all this? I’ve got some opinions and experiences so you can bet I’ll share them. I’m interested in yours so please feel free to share. I made the comment about the motivating factor here being “bigger bucks”. I say that having watched, participated, listened and learned over quite a few years and seeing what really happens and why. 1st off I’ll tell you upfront I don’t buy into any of the “healthy , balanced herd” BS that’s being sold to us hunters 24/7 by the holier than tho hunting experts. THIS is about growing bigger bucks and that’s all it’s ever been about. While managing my own property over the years I’ve passed up more bucks than I could possibly count. The reason is I simply didn’t want to end my season by filling my tag too early. This resulted in years where I never filled my tag. No complaints from me , that’s just how it goes sometimes. While I was passing up all these bucks over the years I was keeping track of what I saw , when I saw it and if I saw that buck again. I’ve done this for years and I’m talking about quite a few bucks. In 2012 alone I let 17 different bucks walk past me and never killed one of them. What I proved is what has been proven by many before me and many more will do the same. If you’re going to pass up bucks you better understand this does NOT mean you will have bigger bucks next year on your property. It simply doesn’t work like that. The reason is bucks spend most of their lives moving , they move continuously for years before they settle down and call someplace home. Maybe 1 out of 100,000 bucks actually reach that 5-6 yr old stage where they settle down. So while you’re passing up bucks you’re relying on hunters a few miles away to do the same in order for you to see bigger deer the next year and so on. The bucks you let walk are not going to be there next year, so your discipline will benefit someone else the following year and not you. This is how it goes and it’s been proven all over the continent. Let me share some words straight from the DEC to give you an idea where they’re coming from. This from their “announcement” about antler restrictions : Regardless, many hunters would prefer to see DEC enact regulations to further reduce harvest of yearling bucks. A 2010 survey by Cornell University found that 57% of hunters across the state thinkmandatory ARs are a good idea. But the survey also found that 54% of hunters think voluntary ARs are a good idea and 50% like a 1-buck per hunter rule. I’m not aware of a single hunter who participated in this survey but I can tell you right now there isn’t a single hunter in NYS who supports “1-buck per hunter rule”. That is simply fabricated and has no place in any plan for managing our deer. As for the rest of it I would most likely believe it. We all know a lot of hunters have been voluntarily practicing antler restrictions for years, myself included. I would guess most have seen the same results I have in that there hasn’t been any noticeable change in the amount of older bucks we see. What the DEC has made pretty clear is this : we either go along with this or they will shorten our seasons and reduce hunting opportunities. Not sure this is a great strategy to sell an idea but this is what they will do so we’ll end up buying into this. The bottom line is we are going to be hunting under different rules very soon so we better get on board and not end up losing a couple weeks off our season because we don’t agree with this. The whole strategy behind growing bigger bucks is to have as much land as possible committed to the same goal. Letting young deer walk and growing older deer can only be accomplished by “locking up” a whole lot of ground to the same rules. I’ve read about this countless times while trying it myself to see what actually happens. Many of the “experts” have claimed you need to have a minimum of a square mile committed to antler restrictions or you won’t see any benefit. I believe this is seriously under estimated in that it will take several square miles in a antler restriction program or you won’t see ANY benefit. The only real way to accomplish all this is to institute rules/laws that will require it to happen. It’s been done in Pennsylvania and from what I can see it’s working. I say working in that there seems to be a whole lot more bigger bucks coming from Pa. these days than there was in the past. But there’s another side to all this , there always is. The drive from my house over to my hunting land is about 15 minutes. My route takes me through a state forest , public hunting land , where I see the same guys every year hitting the woods whenever they can. You know the guys I’m talking about , the guys who love this sport as much as anyone and take every opportunity to get in the woods. They don’t own any land so they hunt the state land and hope for the best. Many show up driving the family car through the snow just hoping they can make it to a parking spot they can not only get in but get out! These guys can’t get away from work during the week so they’re limited to what ever time they can grab on the weekend when their family commitments allow. These are the people who will feel the impact of this , at least in the short term and maybe the long term. I’m not going to bang the drum against antler restrictions but I’m also not going to ignore the guy I’m describing here because these are the people who represent the majority of our group. My hope is this whole idea works in a way the average guy I’m talking about still has an opportunity to fill his tag and keeps him/her in this sport because we cannot survive without them. Soon we will have the details from the DEC and I’ll be sure to share them here. In the meantime I’m open to any discussion any of you want to have regarding antler restrictions in NY. We all have opinions about this and they all should be heard. Speaking of which , the DEC says they have been “studying” this idea for years and have solicited input from hunters. This is news to me and I follow this stuff pretty closely. Oh well , we can’t expect to truly be heard when the wheels are already in motion. So we’ll sit back and see what comes of this. Thanks for stopping by and please share this with friends and offer comments. If you’re one of the many who’s looking forhunting land in NY to purchase well you know I have it! Click or call (800) 260 – 2148 any time and we can talk about what properties I have right now and especially the ones I have coming soon! Thanks again for stopping by
  15. Not just Ny my friend..Look at most any state hunting site and you will see the same. Just saw a post awhile back on the qdma website where guys were saying they do/did the same. Sit at the den site with shotguns and ............................Boom! Cant say i could bring myself to that move and we do have a rocky outcrop where they do den at times.
  16. Thats because the bottom line is...What man wants-Man Gets! They dont care if they let hunters kill does with fawns because the whole problem to begin with was to many deer. They figure yeah the fawn dies but they got rid of 2 deer out of an area with to many deer already.
  17. Funny you say this. I just bought a Great Pyrenees puppy from a farm down Nunda way back in Nov. Picked him up on my way home from opening weekend of shotgun. Took him to the vet's last month. He was born in August and in January he pushed 56 pounds. His parents are both 150lbs dogs. If he does not put the run on the yote he will at least alert me to them being there.
  18. Sounds to me that you DONT have a COYOTE PROBLEM...Like others may. We now have a healthy population of huntable coyotes.also, we also now do not have livestock problems from them and we have as many or more turkey and deer than we had before our coyote problem. Kinda like deer i guess, some have way to many, some have great numbers and some have none.
  19. I agree and have no problem with them..per say. I believe our area is different than most just because of the 109,000 acres that they have to play on with no hunting. It seems like a few included our 700 acres into their zone and caused problems. We had farmers around here that let cattle die and lay in fields to bloat, pop and stink to high heavens. I am sure that did not help matters to a point for our area but before we started removing a pile of them our deer and turkey numbers disappeared.Whether it was them getting ate or just chased to no ends i cant really say but a couple years later we have flocks of hundreds of turkey and our deer numbers are have rebounded nicely. We still see tracks around and still hear some yipping and yapping but its far from having a pack on all 4 corners singing to each other all night.
  20. I hear that. Out brushing another 6-8 inches of trucks today so all can head to work. Where is the mid winter thaw we always get? I am one thats sure ready for green grass and some farm work.
  21. Listen i really dont have to sit here and argue this shit with you. You live 30 minutes away, jump in your pickup and drive up here and i will be more than happy to take you cross lots from my propert and introduce you to the family that lost their fallows. Some ate a bit on but many just killed. I myself have never lost a deer in my pens because i have electric around my pens. Sorry to you lovers but if you had skin in the game with livestock that has a 10,000 price tag on their heads you would not be so smittin with them when they run you pens and get animals bouncing of fences. That problem is not so much of an issue an longer, Killing on sight, 24-7, 365 will do that for ya. I dont care where a coyote makes his living as long as its not on my piece of paradise. Sorry! For anyone to say that they do affect your deer and turkey populations have never had to many coyotes and that my friend is a proven fact, whether you choose to believe it or not is none of my concern but i can show you some happy hunters that have profited from the eviction of the vermin!
  22. I wonder if burning wood is any worse than the nasty old burner we have in the shop? Burns old oil, trnaay fluid, brake fluid you name it and that thing will burn it. Smoke? Ya that thing makes clouds. Must be OSHA approved i guess.
  23. Well lets just say what we are killing now is more to the norm of what coyotes should be than what we have killed years past. When i buy hunting land and all i have to hunt are dogs then i have a problem. If they are doing their normal thing of digging under 8ft fences and killing livestock for the fun of it i would say they are not trying to survive. They are friggin killers. When you have more dogs than deer, you have a problem. When you have 109,000 acres of unhunted property where there is very little if any coyote hunting you will end up with problems. When a couple guys are gutting a deer in the dark and they have coyotes trying to run them off the kill then there is a problem. We have good numbers of small game some years and others not so much. Bottom line is i bought land to hunt deer, not dogs. After 3 years i do not believe anything about a lull. I now have lots of deer both young and old and we still have some dogs running around. But i can tell you that you can no longer stand in my backyard,in the evening, overlooking 700 acres and hear 4 different packs of dogs yipping and yapping to each other. And as i said in another post that there now are complaints of yotes being in the fenced in cantonment area on drum digging thru garbage and talk of pets missing so who knows. Maybe that is their safe haven now as its only across the road.
  24. I was never on any wagon until their numbers over powered our deer numbers. Their harassing of my livestock and their getting in and killing others were the straw that broke. Gutting deer and have them around you. Having them sneaking in on your turkey set ups. I believe they decimated the wildlife where they live around here and have spread out further to make a living. Not real sure. All i know is a couple 3 years of shoot on sight and heavy dog hunting has brought their numbers down. Big Time. Thats why i dont hold alot of faith in the...You kill more and more will come theory. After 3 years that has just not happened.
